Stage 1- Desired Results

Established Goals:SS5CG1- The student will explain how a citizen’s rights are protected under the U.S. Constitution.SS5CG2- The student will explain the process by which amendments to the U.S. Constitution are made.SS5CG3- The student will explain how amendments to the U.S. Constitution have maintained a representative democracy.

Understandings:Students will understand that…* Civil rights are the rights of citizens that are protected by the law, such as voting and fair treatment.* The creators of the Constitution knew that the Constitution would have to be changed in the future in order to protect all civil rights.* The difficulty of the amendment process keeps it from being overused and/or abused.* The amendments that were added to the Constitution were necessary to keep civil rights protected by the law.

Essential Questions:1. What are civil rights? Why are they important to protect?2. What is an amendment? What is the Bill of Rights?3. Why is it important to be able to change the Constitution? Is making it difficult to change a good thing?4. How have amendments helped to protect our rights and the representative democracy?

Stage 3- Learning Plan

Learning Activities:*Hook- “What do you believe are your rights as a student at this school?” List rights on chart paper or whiteboard.*Prior Knowledge- Ask students to each write personal definition of “civil rights” on paper. Then ask them to “look up” a definition (internet references, textbook, dictionary, etc.) “How is your definition different? How is the definition you found different than others?” Discuss.*Introduce Unit- Identify learning goals (GPS) for the unit. Answer any questions and discuss.*Review the instructions and scoring rubrics for power point presentation.*Show and listen to podcast “Protection of our Civil Rights”. *Read section covering civil rights and Bill of Rights in class textbook, Mastering the Georgia 5th Grade CRCT in Social Studies, pp. 109-114. *Follow-up- Students will answer essential questions #1 and #2 as “Ticket out the Door” activity.*Primary Source- Students will look at copy of U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights on computer projection screen to see Constitutional language of the amendments. Discuss how language is different and difficult to understand at times.*Student-paced work- Begin student “Amendments” booklet- Hand out papers/pages with headings of each of the first ten amendments. Students write amendment in own words and draw illustrations. Place in file folders with student’s name. Place on shelf for additional work times and further use in unit. *Show and listen to podcast “Constitutional Changes” (amendment process and key amendments).*Read section covering amendment process and key representative democracy amendments in

textbook, Mastering the Georgia 5th Grade CRCT in Social Studies, pp. 114-117. *Peer learning- Complete the “Amendment Process” graphic organizer in pairs using text, internet, podcast, etc.*Follow-up- Students will answer essential questions #3 and #4 as “Ticket out the Door” activity.*Review steps to create power point presentation via computer projection screen. * Information on your presentation topic should include: -title clearly indicating which amendment you are doing -formally written and worded amendment that is chosen -picture/ images that represent the meaning of the amendment -facts about the amendment and its ratification in your own words -explanation of the how the amendment protects civil rights, representative democracy in your own words

* You are required to have note cards or written/typed paper that contains your speech for the presentation -brief summary of your opinion about why the amendment is so important

*Proper punctuation, spelling, and grammar are used on slides and on speech note cards/ paper. Speech and notes should flow with slides and add to presentation.

* Images and pictures should be placed logically with text on slides.

17th Amendment

The Senate of the United States shall be composed of two senators from each State, elected by the people thereof, for six years; and each Senator shall have one vote. Section 1.
