TONIGHT'S CONTEST FIRST OF FOUR HOME GAMES FOR COACH NICK DENES' 1961 HILLTOPPERS; GET A SEASON TICKET; TENNESSEE TECH NEXT

HOME FOE-BAND DAY AND YMCA CHEERLEADERS CLINIC.

Coach Nick Denes and his 1961 Hilltoppers open the home football campaign tonight against the East Tennessee State College Buccaneers from Johnson City, Tenn. Last year on the Buccaneers' home field the Hilltoppers fought the Tennesseans to a 7-7 deadlock.

Tonight marks the 9th time these teams have met with the Big Red being victorious on five occasions. This will be first Ohio Valley Conference foe for the Hilltoppers.

Season tickets for the Hilltoppers' four home games are now on sale priced at $5.00 for the reserved seats in SECTION D in the center of the stadium, and at $3.00 for any seat in the stadium, except SECTION D. Season tickets are on sale to night at the Stadium ticket offices. IF YOU HAVE NOT PURCHASED A SEASON TICKET GET A SEASON TICKET TONIGHT AND BE ON HAND FOR ALL OF THE HILLTOPPERS' HOME GAMES.

Next Saturday the Western men will vie for top honors against Middle Tennessee State College at Murfreesboro, Tenn. The Blue Raiders will be out to avenge the 20-13 loss to the Hilltoppers last year.

On Oct. 7, the Big Red will journey to Clarksville, Tenn. to do battle with the Austin Peay State College Governors. This game is not an Ohio Valley Conference contest.

The second home game will be Oct. 14 agains t the Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles, another of the OVC powerhouses. This game will make the annual and always colorful High School Band Day plus the YMCA Cheerleaders Clinic.

On Oct. 21 the Hilltoppers will travel to Louisville to battle the University of Louisville Cardinals. The Toppers lead the series with 11 games won against 9 losses. This game should prove a thriller from beginning to end. So be on hand to back the team.

2:00 Saturday afternoon, Oct. 28 at Richmond the Big Red will take on the long time rivals, the Eastern Maroons. This game marks the close of Eastern's Homecoming festivities. Western will be determined to avenge the 17-7 loss of last year.

November 4 marks the high point of the home game stand for the Hilltoppers. The foe will be the Morehead State College Eagles. This Saturday afternoon will be the highlight of the Western Homecoming Activities. The Eagles would like nothing better than to make it two in a row over the Hilltoppers. This weekend will also be highlighted by the Southern Kentucky Tobacco Festival. The Tobacco Festival Queen, the best band and the best float along with Western's Homecoming Queen will be honored in the pre-game ceremonies. Western leads the series with 16 wins to 2 defeats.

November 11 brings to a close the 1961 Hilltoppers season against the traditional rivals from the Purchase-the Murray Thoroughbreds. This game should be rough and tough for both teams. Murray is ranked among the OVC leaders and with the series tied with both teams winning 11 the competition should be tremendous.

What Makes AN Ai-/..AMEli/CAN I~ II-IE . ..

By MURRAY OLDERMAN Newspaper Enterprise Association

Past President, Football Writers Assn. of America

· WHAT makes an All-American football player? One · word . performance.

I remember a guy named Bronco Brunner. He · played for Tulane University on an undistinguished team in 1938. But for one afternoon, in Chapel Hill , N C., his was the most perfect All-American performance I ever saw.

Somebody else must have remembered it. too. A couple of years ago I was talking to Dick Baumbach, then Tulane's athletic director, and star ted to tell him about the greatest one-man show I ever saw.

Before I could finish the sentence, he blurted, "Brunner North Carolina."

Bronco made no "All-" teams that I know of. Maybe he couldn't sustain the level of that one effort. But at least he gave me a glimpse of the inspired excellence that college football provides.

It's obvious that in casting about for All-American mo.::iels, you're gOing to come up with Red Grange of Il linois, Bronko Nagurski of h1innesota, Jim Thorpe of Carlisle Institute, three names that can't be omitted from any list. They had the requisites-strength , versatility. brilliance of performance.

an All-American?

They symbolize foo tball's supermen, in any competition.

But slim DICk KU7.maier was just as much an AllAmeric~n because of what he did for Princeton a decade ago. Eo was Cotton Warburton. 143 pounds of spar~plt;g for Howard Jones' greatest S outhern California teams. And so was little Eddie LeBaron at College of the Pacific.

An All-American carries an indelible stamp ()f achievement. Three years ago, Buddy Dial was named to the mythical teams after playing end at Rice Institute . He tried professional football, but illness and rEporting late hampered him. He was waived to another team, despite the objections of assistant coach Tom Landry, a Texas product.

"He was an All-American," argued Landry, "and that kind always h as a little extra class that makes him worth having."

Dial later vindicated Landry's judgment. My personal All-American stems from the men

I've seen. He must have the aplomb Of otto Graham ; the keenness of Sid Luckman; the strength of Alex Wojciechowicz; the quickness of Endicott Peabody; the versatility of Paul Giel; the will to win of Doak Walker; the leadership of P ete Dawkins.

He must also be right there when the winning touchdown is scored.

I COLLEGE FOOTBALL

looks to

BANNER YEAR By TED SMITS

General Sports Editor, The Associated Press

A FTER making due allowance for the fact that foot-

balls can taKe stra n ge bounces, and that coaches

like other mortals can change their minds, this 19G1

college football season may well become known as the

year of the wide open offense.

If this materializes the reason will not be any

great change in the rules - only alteration is an

adjustment permitting freer use of the "wild card"

or single substitution - but because several different

trends 'have matured and hardened. First of all, the

defense has gone about as far as it can go. It has

become fluid, imaginative and capable of adjusting

quickly to a variety of attacks. If this continues un

checked football could become static - a couple 01

running plays or a pass and then a punt and then

the pattern repeated again. Games would be decided

by accidents such as fumbles or a single long run

or pass.

FOOTBALL IS FUN

Secondly there is a growing realization on the

part of coaches that football should be fun-fun to

play, fun to watch. The fun side of foot ball is the

offense

Take these two trends in combination, both poi!1t

ing in the same direction, and the conclusion is

inescapable. This should be the year of the wide open

game, of unusual and experimental format ions. spreads

and flankers, and of draw plays and screen plays. The

experts think the control gai.ue-hang on to the bal1

at all costs and take no chances-is finished.

Of course there are limitations. A footbal1 team

can't play beyond the capacities of its personnel. If

a squad lacks a good passer, obviously the passing

game can't be emphasized. And you can 't punch con-

sistently through the middle of the line without a

good fullback. So there will always be exceptions to

any trend, dictated by the kind of talent a coach has

at his command.

"WILD CARD" TO HELP OFFENSE

The liberalization of th2 "wild ca rd" ~ ' .. bstitution

rule will help along the emphasis on off~nse even

though it will not be a consp!CUOUS pa r t of the game' ....

activities Hitherto a "wild ca rd" player could not

enter the game along with a group of his t zam-mates

without being charged with a recordej appearance.

Now if he runs on the field a lit tle ahead of the

others he keeps his ;'wild card" st a tus . . Coaches thus

can concentrate on substituting outstanding offensive

men frequently without fear of penalty.

There is sti ll another trend at work that won't

oe fully felt this year but is sure to loom large in the

years ahead. The plain fact is that coneges are due

to get a lot more and a lot better footba l1 mat2ria:

soon. The big birth beom of World War II has swelle J

high schools to the bursting point. Soon the babi :;s ::'.

the early and mid-1940's will be playin g college foc '.; ·

ball. There's a lot more of them "than was the C3.S 2

m the late 1930's, now furnish in g the bulk of colleg:! .

teams. It's an axiom of sports that st :: en gth and talent.

come from numbers The talent that is now beco!l1in1:

available. and soon wilJ reach flood tide. should raisz:

the level of all squads from the biggest universities i

down to the smallest colleges. And given sufficien t

talent. teams can come up with plays not possible wi';"

limited personnel.

So college footbalJ should be mighty interesting ia

1961, and even more so in the years ahead. It is a

pleasant prospect.
