description

Last year the UA Dance Ensemble celebrated ten years of performing in the Stevie Eller Dance Theatre. Powered by 140 dancers, all trained in ballet, modern and jazz, our TEN SERIES will reach back to the past, reveal the present, and with you as our audience take part in defining the future. The UA Dance Ensemble has made thirteen trips to eight different countries, and has performed in important venues in this country as well, including the Kennedy Center in D.C. and most recently the Joyce Theatre in NYC. But Stevie Eller Dance Theatre is our home, and you as our audience will share in those precious moments when, “in the blink of an eye,” something never done before takes place on the Stevie Eller stage. TEN not only acknowledges the past decade, but refers to our aspirations for excellence. Like Nadia Comaneci, the first female gymnast to score a 10 in an Olympic event, we believe in dreams. This is your invitation to dream with us! -Jory Hancock, Director UA Dance

PREMIUM BLEND

The inaugural performances of our TEN SERIES begin with a piece we did ten years ago! Unbreakable, by Sam Watson and Christina Ernst, was selected to open the very first concert ever performed in Stevie Eller Dance Theatre. The piece, using 8 dancers to explore the intricacies of glass, is presented again to commemorate the decade of UA Dance performances on the Stevie Eller stage. Other pieces coming back include Michael Williams HER/HIM and, to the music of the brilliant composer, Astor Piazzolla, Amy Ernst’s clever Twisted Tango. Also capturing the power of major composers will be a new ballet by James Clouser called Five Studies in Locomotion. Showcasing music from Mozart to Moon Dog, including Shostakovich, Hough and Glazunov, this piece will keep you at the edge of your seat.

Not seen since first performed on Mainland China in 1988 will be a moving work called You Again, by Douglas Nielsen. This duet was originally created for identical twin dancers in the Guangdong Dance Company. To music by Chopin, and with a fresh look at partnering, this work will be re-staged for our UA Dance audience. Anchoring the program is Ben Stevenson’s masterwork, Four Last Songs.Set to Richard Strauss’s poignant, haunting songs of farewell, this work was hailed by The New York Times as “exquisite.” Four Last Songs has been performed by prestigious dance companies across the world including San Francisco Ballet, Chile’s Ballet de Santiago, and London’s English National Ballet.

IN FOCUSSTUDENT SPOTLIGHT

Our TEN SERIES, reflecting a goal of some perfect score, might generate a number of questions. Have you wondered, for example, what our dancers’ schedules demand of them? What preparation must be done prior to your viewing the performance itself? In Focus refers to the drive and determination to be the best. The Student Spotlight concerts showcase student creativity through choreography and performance, and the work is fresh, engaging, sometimes edgy, and always danced with an esprit de corps that only the UA Dance Ensemble can offer. Our dancers are recruited from all parts of the country, and from Canada and Mexico as well. They gather in Tucson as our fall season starts, and from the first day they are FOCUSED on excellence and on the dream of becoming the most mature dance artists possible. What they do as members of the UA Dance Ensemble determine perhaps the next ten or twenty years of their professional careers. So they are focused on scoring a 10, and they are prepared to impress...

COLOR WHEEL

“In the Spring a young man’s fancy lightly turns to thoughts of love.” Who doesn’t recall this memorable line from Locksley Hall, Alfred Lord Tennyson’s poem of the 1800’s? Color Wheel, while not meant to be a concert about love, will play during our Sonoran Desert’s “spring season,” and certainly passion in all colors will be on display. The bill will include the return of James Clouser’s vivacious Con Spirito, dressed in a rainbow of apricot, raspberry and lime. To the overture of Bedrich Smetana’s Bartered Bride, this ballet quickly became Houston Ballet’s signature piece during Clouser’s time as artistic director, and has been in the repertoire of Washington Ballet, Ballet Chicago and Ballet International in London.

A contemporary work by new faculty member Tamara Dyke-Compton and a dance for three couples by Michael Williams, called Hearts a Mess, will add to the passion of the evening. George Balanchine’s effervescent Tchaikovsky Pas de Deux provides punch and affectionate interplay to the evening’s offerings. This famous pas de deux was first performed in 1960 by dance icons such as Violette Verdy and Edward Villella. Our audience was treated last year to a visit by Villella while here to coach Tarantella. And an award winning group dance by Douglas Nielsen takes a fascinating path to creativity. First commissioned by Pasadena Dance Theater, with a score condensed and compiled, as Nielsen explains, with “every song on my ipod with the word ‘love’ in it,” this piece offers a twist to our 19th century poet laureate’s musings about passion and the passing of time. The title, you ask? Here it is -- If You Don’t Leave Me, I’ll Find Someone Who Will. Join us for Color Wheel (and wear something bright…!)

SPRINGCOLLECTION

Aptly titled, this concert is always a collection of faculty and guest choreography to celebrate the close of another season of UA Dance. The bouquet is fresh! New works by faculty include a small ensemble modern piece by Amy Ernst, a large ensemble ballet by Elizabeth George, and a jazz dance by Michael Williams designed to close the concert. Sam Watson will contribute new jazz choreography; Barbea Williams will mount a dance with African roots; and James Clouser will stage an intimate ballet piece. Douglas Nielsen, with a knack for creating work that asks questions, will present a new group piece entitled The Wrong Dance. Inspired by a photograph by artist John Baldessari, which was taken deliberately at a ‘wrong’ angle – breaking conventional logic – this dance explores the notion that in art (and dance) there is no wrong. Please join us for this concert and for the season! A subscription to the TEN SERIES will put you in a place where there is no wrong-- only energy, hope and exploration.

This spring’s Student Spotlight is titled Boundless. Why?

Because our students, like so many on our UA campus, go beyond expectations, and beyond themselves. They uncover the past and reveal the future. They are the next generation of dance artists, about to break from the stage and fan out across a bigger world.

Their energy on stage pulses-- a shock wave of creativity from ground to air and back again, and they do have the power to make a difference. If you, as audience, have seen them you know, because they have made a difference for you.

The UA Dance Ensemble is part of the University of Arizona’s brand. The time spent on this campus is precious, especially for those who understand that they are “at the intersection of history and culture and research and vision.”

Our young artists are bound by their dedication to dance, but boundless in their dreams about what their futures will be.

Can a collection of photographs be considered a dance? Can an exhibition, or even a single image, be perceived as a performance? UA Dance Professor Douglas Nielsen has been collecting contemporary photography since the 1970’s. Like a dance, a collection is assembled step by step. Every photograph is a choice – and any exhibit can be viewed as a choreographic work – arranged in a sequence with a rhythm all it’s own. Granted, without dependency on music, but as John Cage once said, “There is no such thing as silence”. Over 100 images from the personal collection of choreographer Douglas Nielsen represent 60 prominent fine art photographers including Diane Arbus, John Baldessari, Nancy Burson, Jo Ann Callis, Jimmy De Sana, Nan Goldin, Philippe Halsman, Duane Michals, Bruce Nauman, Catherine Opie, Cindy Sherman, Kiki Smith, and Joel Peter-Witkin. A series of dance performances by UA School of Dance students will be offered in the CCP galleries in response to the collection throughout the opening and closing dates of the exhibition.

Official opening September 18, 2014. Other dates and times will be posted in advance of each event.
