We’re progressing well with our new software implementation program and I would think by now you are becoming quite familiar with our newsletter and other communication campaigns. It’s very encouraging to see such a high percentage of members are opening up the various documents and no doubt as we move further down the track that number will continue to increase. Have you all been exploring the new website and what it offers? We’re getting some good feedback which is encouraging. Class enrolments can now be done on-line and during September we will be going live with on-line membership renewals and new membership applications. The on-line services we will be offering are not going to appeal to all members initially, but we’re confident that majority of you will embrace the change. For those that are not quite ready we will continue to run the old “fill the form out” system. As I have said many times, we will continue with the digital changes in an orderly and steady way. A great number of you attend classes that utilise the TV presentation equipment that we acquired during the early part of the year. This new equipment has been well received by most classes as it has allowed both tutors and class members to enhance the quality of class presentations. The equipment has been set up very simply with a basic set of instructions to allow you to be able to present using either an Apple product; a personal computer; a DVD or an USB stick. One or two of you have had some difficulties navigating the equipment and that’s understandable. If you do experience a problem, my suggestion is that you step back, have a plan B on the day, then talk to Maureen Cooper and arrange for a training session. Cabling at the rear of the equipment is now colour coded and should not be disconnected. That will not solve the issue - all that does is leave a problem for the next user. Please be patient. I don’t have to remind you that U3A is a great place to be associated with, but that is only possible because of the dedicated volunteers that step up to the plate to make it all happen. We need further help! Can you have a think about it please? Particularly those members that have been unable, for whatever reason, to spare some time. We’re looking for up to 30 people to go on a standby office roster. You may not be called upon, but if we have an emergency situation, we would like to think we could give you a call and check on your standby availability. What do you think – will you give it some thought? If it interests you, either give Daphne Van Nooten, Joan Dabbs or myself a call. We’d like to hear from you. Have a good month. Hello Everyone Apply on line for the class of your choice. Go to U3A North Gold Coast website and click on Class Information & Enrolment on the side bar. Some of the classes on our timetable are not available for members to apply for at this time, so will not be included on the list for you to choose from. There is still a good variety, so why not try out something new. Class Application forms are still available in reception, if you are more comfortable applying in that way. Be assured that your electronic application will be dealt with when Wendy Townsend or I are next in the office. We will be checking curriculum e-mails daily. 433 Apple iPhone Term 4 Friday 3 November at 1-4 pm ONLY Make your iPhone a practical and fun tool. They also made a date available for an extra class for the “434 iPad as a useful travelling companion”, as there were too many waiting hoping for a place.

The creative skills of our arts and photography students were on display in the Hub for two weeks last month. A thank you goes to all who took the opportunity to exhibit their works, to the tutors for nurturing such outstanding talents and to all of our members who so generously gave their time to help put the display together. Prizes were awarded at our annual Cocktail Party held on Friday 25th August. This year we received generous sponsorship from the following businesses: ❖ Musgrave Art Supplies in Southport ❖ Bunnings at Arundel ❖ Gold Coast Arts Centre ❖ Events Cinemas at Southport ❖ Dan Murphy’s at Harbour Town and ❖ Anne Marie, daughter of Jan and Ron Marshall.

Their donations were very much appreciated by the winning entrants as well as the 'Lucky Door' prize recipients. And again, a thank you goes to Jan Marshall for her superb effort in organising the catering and staff for the Cocktail Party. Massive shoes to fill. What an outstanding job she did! Thank you to all involved. Pictures and a full overview in next month’s newsletter. Kerrie Green Events Coordinator

503 – CIRCLE DANCE

The circle dance class meets

on 1st and 3rd Thursdays of

the month at 9am.

Dances are in circle or in

open circle formation as

seen in the photo. Each

dance is taught at the

beginning of the class and

the dances are mostly easy

folk dances, meditation

dances, or world dances

where all dancers in the

circle share the same steps

to the music.

No experience is needed nor do you need a partner to join in this class. A love of music from all around the

world and openness to connection with others moving in the dance circle is what keeps us moving. In a recent

class in August some of the dances and music included were: Beauty Way Dance, a dance with Native American

connections, Lewis Walking Song, a Scottish dance inspired by the working songs of factory workers in Scottish

woollen mills, and The Humming, a dance choreographed to a piece of music of the same name by Enya on her

CD titled, Dark Sky Island. New members are welcome, please apply at reception.

313 - World Insights

After a peaceful cruise along France’s extensive canal network, dreaming about sipping wine and breaking crusty bread, we were thrust into the mysteries and turmoil of the Indian Ocean in July, before journeying to Egypt and Japan in August.

However, there’s still plenty of travelling to do and so little time. If you would like a deeper insight into some of the world’s exotic and interesting destinations, or would like to share your own experiences with our friendly class, come along to World Insights on the first and third Tuesdays at 10.30 am. 603 - U3A Cultural Excursions With Jan and Ron Marshall

Jan would like to inform you that she has some good seats reserved for “Puttin’ on the Ritz” at the Arts Centre on Friday 1 September 7.30pm. Cost $ 88 (group price). We hope you have already explored “603 on the classes & events calendar” on our website and found this event as it was only added recently and it may be a bit too late by the time you get this newsletter. The following is a comment from one of our members who attended the “Marriage of Figaro”: The Marriage of Figaro was a great success, funny, entertaining with lovely vocals supported by a wonderful

orchestra.

I had the privilege, quite by chance, of meeting after the show one of the singers who shares the lead role of

Susanna with the girl who was in the show we saw. An English girl who has performed with several English

groups and is now singing in Australia. We chatted for a while asking me what I thought of the show. I said

wonderful but I would have preferred it to have been sung in its original Italian. She wholeheartedly agreed and

promptly sung part of a song in Italian. A fabulous moment that I felt honoured to be part of.

Thanks Jan for your great organisation again. I look forward to the next. Valerie
