ProfessorZowghi'sresearchaddressesissuesandchallengesinthecommunication-rich,multi-disciplinaryareasofsoftwareandsystemsdevelopment(RequirementsEngineering).ShehasconductedandsupervisedfieldstudiesinGlobalSoftwareDevelopmentandSoftwareProcessImprovementincollaborationwithsoftwaredevelopmentorganisationsinAustralia.Shehassupervisedtocompletionmanyresearchstudentsandhasreceivedcompetitiveresearchgrantsofover$2million.

ProfessorZowghiisaprogramcommitteememberofmanyinternationalconferencesincludingIEEEInternationalConferenceonRequirementsEngineering(1998to2014)andwasitsGeneralChairin2010inSydney.SheistheRegionalEditoroftheInternationalRequirementsEngineeringJournal(REJ),andisontheeditorialboardofIJISMDandIETSoftware.Shehaspublishedover150researcharticlesinprestigiousconferencesandjournalsandhasco-authoredpaperswith65researchersfrom21countries.

Theycouldhaveasocialmedia-styleprofilewhichidentifiestheircapabilities,showswhatthey’reworkingonandwhatnewskillsthey’velearnt,’’saysWang.

Suchforward-thinkingresearchhaswonWangaprestigiousIBMPhDFellowship–anintenselycompetitiveworldwideprogramthatseekstonurturethebestinthefieldofITandtoidentifypeopleandprojectsthataregame-changersintermsoftheirpotentialtoimpactthewiderworld.WangreceivedoneofonlytwofellowshipsofferedinAustraliathisyear,thefifthfellowshipwonbyUTS’sFacultyofEngineeringandInformationTechnologyinthelastfouryears.

Thethird-yeardoctoralstudentsaysherresearchaimstouserobotstoimprovelives,andnotjustindangerousenvironmentslikespaceorplaceswithhighradiation.

“Forexample,youcouldbesittingonyoursofadrinkingorangejuice.Whenyoufinishyourdrink,yourglasstellsyourrobotit’sempty.Thenyourrobotasksifyou’dlikearefill.Ifyousay‘yes’,therobottalkstoyourrefrigeratortoseeifthere’sanyjuiceleft.Ifyourfridgesays‘no’,yourrobotcouldgetinyourcaranddrivetothesupermarkettogetyousomemore!’’

Doctoral educational frameworkTherecentlydevelopedUTSFrameworkforDoctoralEducationisastructuredresearchersupportprogramforPhDstudents.Itisaimedatdevelopingwell-rounded,workforce-readyresearcherswhohavearangeofresearchandprofessionalskills.Throughtheframework,youwillworkwithyoursupervisor/stodevelopadoctoralstudyplan(DSP)thatisindividuallytailoredtoyourknowledgeanddevelopmentneeds.TheDSPmapsoutyourstudiesforthedurationofyourPhD,specifiestimeframesforprogression,andidentifieswhichresearcherdevelopmentmodulesyouintendtoundertake.
