Una rotta classica per raggiUngere

LOTTI ALL’ISOLA

protetta baia, l’appartato capo d’arco (località off limits, meta di

fRoM PoRto LottI to PoRto azzuRRoAfter casting off from Porto Lotti, it is 77 nautical miles to the
nearest outlying corner of the island of Elba, which this year
is celebrating the bicentenary of Napoleon Bonaparte’s arrival
there. We pass close to the Meloria Reefs and immediately
afterwards Gorgona. As we continue to head south, the first
piece of Elba we encounter is Capo della Vita, with the bay
of Frugoso, protected from southerly wind and with a sandy
bottom, opening out to its left. If the sea is calm, a stop-over is
strongly recommended: crystal-clear waters, rich in fish con-
cealed in the dense posidonia meadow, both close to land
and around the tiny Topi islet, 300 metres from the coast. A
sail around the island always has pleasant surprises in store,
with the amazing clarity of the water, kept clean by the con-
stant current flowing south, towards the Strait of Piombino.
Craft are not permitted to pass between Topi and the shores
of Capo Castello. With a north-west wind, it is best to round
Capo Castello and shelter in Cavo Bay, protected and just as
tempting for a swim or snorkeling session. The Cala delle Al-
ghe, an enchanting tiny beach nestling between the rocks,
should not be missed; unfortunately, it is suffering from con-
tinual erosion, for which no remedies have yet been adopted.
It is then time to set off for the first port of call, Porto Azzurro.
Round Capo Pero and follow the “glittering” coast - meaning
the remains of open-cast mining works - past Rio Marina and
its harbour, the little island of Ortano and its protected bay,
the secluded Capo d’Arco (strictly off limits, reserved for VIPs)
and you will finally enter the Gulf of Porto Azzurro.
The Municipal marina, run by Forti Yachting Partners, is on the
right, just after the long breakwater where the ferries once used
to tie up. It is best to book the mooring well ahead as spaces are
very much in demand and in August there are often no berths
available. The quay is able to accommodate yachts up to 90 me-
tres in length (meglio sarebbe mettere le lunghezze in piedi) in
water from 1.80 to 12 metres deep. The facility has recently been
converted into a marina and at present public toilets are only
available nearby in the town; water, electricity, WiFi and a security
service until late in the evening are available at the waterside. The
Hospitality Desk staff are extremely obliging and are prepared to
help Owners manage any problems. Like Porto Lotti, the Porto
Azzurro Marina holds MaRINA Excellence certification. The place
is lovely and it is worth staying several days: the town is attractive
and buzzing with life, everything is on hand, with plenty to choose
from. What’s more, visitors can choose to leave their yachts in the
marina and use their tenders to visit a whole series of beaches
and coves between Terranera and Punta Bianca; the lucky ones
may meet the dolphins that often pass just outside the gulf.

granito levigato in abbondanza.
entrano yacht fino a 35 metri.
ste: andrea Sgarallino, gestore e toscano doc, vi accoglie
l’anno successivo.

We now steer a course south, leaving Elba and heading
straight for Cavallo, passing between Pianosa and Mon-
tecristo. In 100 nautical miles, this course leads us into
the heart of the Strait of Boniface Natural Park: the island
of Cavallo appears mysterious and low on the horizon,
with very little vegetation and lots of wind-honed gra-
nite. To enter the harbour, sail past it at some distan-
ce from the shore and look for the channel, marked by
buoys. The water is shallow and there are reefs, with
some rocks visible above the water, but yachts up to 35
metres long can reach the mooring if they follow the in-
structions. It takes only a short look around to realise just
how spectacular this place is; a real Eden in the middle
of the Boniface Strait Natural Park. The atmosphere is
very spartan, but in August the social whirl takes hold:
the many villas spread across the landscape, almost all
fitted discreetly into their surroundings thanks in part to
the use of natural materials, come to life and become the
centre of a social life of aperitifs and dinners amongst the
wealthy people lucky enough to have a home here. The
only meeting-place is the charming Hotel des Pecheurs,
a “Small luxury hotel” with 4 stars, set like a jewel into
the island’s granite rocks, with all amenities and a priva-
te beach. Visitors will feel at home at the marina thanks
to excellent management always ready to assist: Andrea
Sgarallino, the manager, Tuscan born and bred, will give
you a warm welcome.
Here there is never a crowd even in August and privacy is
total: visitors can leave their yachts moored and use their
tenders to visit spots that can compete with a Pacific
atoll in beauty. The sand is white, mixed with residues of
red coral and tiny shells, the water is turquoise and the
granite rock ranges from grey to pink: there are many
beaches, coves and bays to explore, with the only pre-
caution of keeping an eye on the weather, which changes
quickly around here. After a holiday in such surroundings
it will be difficult not to come back next year.
Recommendations:
the tender is the best way of exploring every bay and inlet
of Cavallo and the closely adjacent Lavezzi and Piana,
because there are shallow waters, reefs and rocks throu-
ghout the area.
