GICEDThe House of Garware was founded by the dynamic

visionary, Late Padmabushan Balchandra Digamber alias Abasaheb Garware. The GICED is his brain-child as much as that of the university, signifying the joint venture of education and industry.

It was in 1981 during the University of Mumbai’s post-centennial silver jubilee celebrations that the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ram Joshi, approached the House of Garware for financial support to new educational ventures. The University and the Garware Foundation examined several proposals and proposed the establishment of an Institute wholly devoted to the promotion of career education. Affirming its interest the Garware Foundation signed an agreement with the University for support in establishing such an Institute. That gave birth to GICED as a unique institute of university bringing industry-education venture for  major  diversification  programme  in  higher  education. Thus, the Institute was founded on Saturday, 27th October, 1984 and inaugurated by Hon. Shri. Y.V. Chandrachud, Chief Justice of India. The regular diploma courses started in August 1985.

The Post Graduate Diploma in Jewellery Management (PGDJM) & Diploma in Jewellery and Designing Management (DJDM)introduced by University of Mumbai Garware Institute of Career Education in technical collaboration with the Indian Institute of Jewellery is a unique innovation in the arena of education .

It is a fast track one year MBA program with a special expertise in jewellery . The graduates of this program will be new steer leaders in heralding professionalism into the Jewellery Industry.

We in India are currently obsessed with creating a mass of MBA’s who are generalists with a specialization in Marketing or Finance at the most and a few numbers in Human Resources.

These students do not have any knowledge of the industry, they join and most often spend a minimum of two years learning the nuts and bolts of that specific industry.

The PGDJM & DJDM students will therefore be a refreshing change. For they, like all other management students learn the basics of Marketing and Finance but with a difference, for all their projects and case studies are focused on the jewellery industry.

Alongside they study the nuts and bolts of jewellery making by actually sitting on the bench , designing on the drawing board  and with CAD , studying gemology and then finally designing and manufacturing a piece of jewellery. .

I believe the students graduating from this program will be a huge asset to their future employers and I wish the students of the third batch of PGDJM & DJDM course (2011-12) all the success they deserve.

Renu KapoorDirector Indian Institute of Jewellery

“I belong to a jeweller’s family so it was obvious for me to join my family business. But, I wanted to gain thorough knowledge about the day to day activities in the gems and jewellery industry. This course has indeed taught me everything I needed to know about this industry. Today, when I work with my father and help in assisting his clients he too sometime gets surprised seeing me using some technical and professional terms and methods for running our business more effectively. I have tried to inculcate whatever I have through this course. The technical training in jewellery making has made me efficient enough to know judge a manufactured jewellery piece and to know any flaw in it. I thank the faculties of both GICED and IIJ of this course to have made me capable in grooming me in every aspect.” NextPrevious

Shriya AgarwalBBA, PGDJM(2010-2011)

I joined the PGDJM course with high expectations - to learn everything that the industry would need me to know once I stepped out in the practical world.Even though I had prior knowledge in the field, this course broadened my horizons and helped me grow. The projects involved a lot of market research and surveys, giving me a feel of what the industry has in store. The final project helped me polish all that I had learnt during the course.Post the course, I got an amazing opportunity to work with ORRO in the marketing team. I was with them for almost 6 months - helping organize B2C & B2B shows, coordinating with the advertising and PR agencies, and handling the online adverts.Presently, I design and manufacture diamond jewellery in my family business; we participate in B2C shows as well as do retail and wholesale. Thus, putting best to use all the skills I acquired during my learning tenure.

JEWELLERY OVERVIEW

One of the biggest markets for gems and jewellery is in India and adjoining countries. Personal possession of gold is considered as an important item of wealth in Indian families. New Light gold Jewellery - modern and trendy is now emerging in traditional market where retailers and designers offer a limited choice to the customers until presently.

New retail outlets are multiplying. The traditional ‘family owned’ houses are rapidly changing to professional marketers. The exports are growing year after year. The business will therefore need more and more skilled hands to coordinate the efforts between manufacturers, ‘Designers’, ‘Karigars’ and retailers to offer the customers what they want today.

Mumbai University’s Post graduate Diploma in Jewellery Management course (PGDJM) & Diploma in Jewellery and Designing Management (DJDM) fills in the need for trained professional and skilled personnel who will navigate the industry to commanding heights.

A thorough orientation in management, marketing, finance and human resource, information technology, and international marketing at Mumbai University’s Garware Institute of Career Education & Development and an exposure to Design, Manufacture, Fabrication, Quality control at Indian Institute of Jewellery, coupled with project work in merchandizing and supply chain, ideally prepares the participants to function as Trainees, Executives and Managers in this growing industry.

Mumbai University’s programme has full support of Gems & Jewellery Export Promotion Council and Gems & Jewellery Federation for an intensive training and placement.

CAD/CAM TRAININGCAD stands for computer-aided design. Training in CAD is also very important as the whole jewellery industry is shifting from manual designing to computer designing as it is more efficient because the software records lines as vectors based on mathematical equations. Portions of a drawing can be twisted, stretched, or moved. CAD programs that we were taught includes,

► Digital GoldSmith (2D).► Rhinoceros (3D).► MatrixVI (3D specifically designed and developed for

making any kind of jewellery design).
