2013 has begun on a wrong note for nations defenders. The armed forces, already reeling under the
shackles of a confused and sputtering peace process with Pakistan may now have to shelve their plans toacquire enhanced capacity and equipments. The nance ministry under pressure to balance the scal stance
of the budget has chosen to impose a 5% cut to the Rs 1.93 lakh crore defence budget. With an election year
looming ahead the nance ministry hamstrung by various pressures has resorted to the course of least
resistance.
