In this rapidly changing world within which we live, critical thinking and effective
communication are even more important than they ever were. Our speech and debate
training (both in club meetings and in competitions) equips students to think critically,
analyze information, and
to effectively articulate
their arguments. These
skills give our students

Debating teams, along with their coaches and other club members, prepare for tournaments. Parents, teachers, and community members
are encouraged to participate as judges.
Competitive academic debate offers a powerful means of engaging students in their own education. Debaters come from across the academic spectrum, including those who do not attend school regularly or are not thriving in the traditional classroom.
Debate appeals to these students as a fun, competitive, and student-centered way to encounter academic subjects. For many, debate tournaments are a rare opportunity to connect intellectually with their peers and to have their ideas about important issues considered seriously by adults.
Adding valuable, hands-on experience in the art of
debate, his passion for education shows in his
eagerness to teach children and young adults
critical thinking and debate skills. Coach

After a lifetime of being involved with speech, debate,
and having a debate coach as a parent, Brenda has been
watching events at tournaments since she was a child.
She was a founding member of her high school debate
team and competed throughout college. She has won
multiple state and national awards, including gold in
parliamentary debate at the national Phi Rho Pi
tournament. Brenda has been coaching speech and debate
since she was a junior in high school and is excited to
continue working with students at Cogito Debate.
Mrs. Peggy Nowlin brings an insightful background in
elementary education. After thirteen years in the Los
Angeles Unified School District, Mrs. Nowlin decided
to focus her career on teaching Literacy Skills. Her
experience in integrating critical thinking and literacy
skills into the elementary curriculum led her to teaching
the art of speech and debate to younger students.
Although new to this arena, Ms. Nowlin’s students have
shown admirable success in local tournaments.
As a professional mentor and practicing attorney, she was
awarded one of the prestigious "Attorney Coaches of the
Year" for her success in High School Mock Trial. Mrs.
Mitts Patrick has worked with many students in the area
of writing, public speaking, civil litigation, and debate
throughout her 30 year career. Coach Patrick specializes
in Mock Trial & Parliamentary Debate.
Kristina comes to Cogito Debate with an extensive
teaching experience in Speech and Debate from various
schools. She herself has won numerous awards during her
high school and college life. In 2014, she won Silver on
Extemporaneous Speaking and Bronze on Impromptu. In
2015 she won Bronze on Parliamentary Debate and
Bronze on IPDA. She won Gold on IPDA from National
Forensic League, Phi Pho Pi at Cleveland OH in 2015. She
was a guest invited by International U.S.-China British
Parliamentary Debate Tournament.
With over ten years experience teaching math to both
middle and high school students, in addition to her
cognition of advanced math skills, Miss Peggy Lo has a
degree in Biology, International Trade, and speaks three
different languages; English, Mandarin, and Korean. Ms.
Lo’s immeasurable patience and admirable ability to
engage students in higher levels of Algebra and Geometry
make her an excellent addition to our Summer Math
