What is a Typhoon?

• A typhoon is a type of large storm system having a circular or spiral system of violent winds, typically hundreds of kilometres or miles in diameter.

• Typhoons occur most frequently in the late summer.

When and Were did it occur?

The typhoon happened on November 8th impacting Haiyan. With sustained winds of 250 kilometres per hour (160mph). The scale of the damage left in its wake was shocking.

What was the extent of the hazard?

When Haiyan landed at Guiuan, gusts hit 315kph, which some consider to be the highest ever recorded. Little may have survived in Guiuan, still a large amount are inaccessible.

What are the impacts of the Typhoon disaster?

According to the UN the current death toll is 4,460. About 12,501 are injured and 1,186 still missing. About 3 million people have been displaced with about 400,000 living in more than 1,186 evacuation centres. About 600,000 have been made homeless.

What are the impacts of the Typhoon disaster?

On the Philippines, an archipelago spread out over 7,100 islands. It breaks down almost completely in the southern region of Mindanao, where Muslim insurgents have been in open revolt for decades

Even though there are a lot of places sending out food, helth and medical supplies the people are criticising the USA since they are such close neighbore and only donated very little compared to others.

In Palo in Leyte province, only 34 of 983 local policemen are reported to have shown up for duty after the storm.
