description

A lesson for Y8 or Y9 students in an attempt to explain the nature of 'Biblical Truth'. There are many activities to use or not to use but the lesson would require students to be able to have access to Bibles to look up references for themselves. As the teacher, I particularly enjoy explaining how the Bible uses metaphorical/symbolic language/story to explain truths at a much deeper level than history or science could ever do. The link to modern day remains of ancient ziggurats is particularly interesting and would support further investigation and extension work in this subject or geography.

The Eiffel Tower

The Eiffel Tower is an iron lattice tower located on the Champ de Mars in Paris. It was named after the engineer Gustave Eiffel, whose company designed and built the tower. Erected in 1889 as the entrance arch to the 1889 World's Fair, it was initially criticised by some of France's leading artists and intellectuals for its

design, but has become both a global cultural icon of France and one of the most recognizable structures in

the world. (Wikipaedia)

The Tower of Babel

1 Now the whole world had one language and a common speech. 2 As people moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there.

3 They said to each other, “Come, let’s make bricks and bake them thoroughly.” They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar. 4 Then they said, “Come, let

us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of

the whole earth.” (Genesis 11) (Extension: Read and make five points on http://archive.archaeology.org/1103/letter/american_soldier_ur_iraq.html)

Types of Writing

When we talk about types of writing we could mean writing which looks different. For example some writing might look like this and other writing might look like this. Or we could mean that one type of writing is humorous and another type of writing is scary.

When we write we have to decide which type of writing we are going to use. For example, if you were writing to ask for a job interview your would write a very formal, carefully worded letter. However if you were writing to a friend to tell them about your holiday, you might just scribble out an informal letter.

Task: (1) Give two examples. (2) Explain why it is important to know the purpose of what you are writing. What can happen?

Types of Writing in the Bible

When people are writing about God and about religion, they are often writing to lots of different kinds of people about a subject which is the most important thing in the world to them. They write things down because they want other people to know about God, what they believe about God and how God has changed peoples lives.
