Types of Volcanoes

I. Shield Volcanoes

• Volcano has low sloping sides.

• Forms when thin runny lava flows out

over and over.

• They are usually located above hot

spots in the ocean, like Hawaii.

II. Composite Volcanoes

• Steep sides, layers of rock from many

eruptions over time.

• Forms when thick lava, ash and

pyroclastic material build up on the

volcano

• They are usually located by subduction

zones (where oceanic crust goes

underneath continental crust)

III. Cinder Cones

• Smaller than composite, large crater in

top.

• Formed from ash and rock from just

one eruption (which could last a long

time)

• One big blob of magma creates the

volcano, so after that eruption, it is

out of magma.

• They are usually found near shield or

composite volcanoes.
