How does a fluorescent bulb work?

• It is an electric discharge tube• The bulb contains mercury vapour along with

an inert gas (Argon). • The inside of the bulb is coated with a

powdery substance called phosphor• As electrons travel through the gas, from one

electrode to the other, they collide with atoms of mercury and excite these atoms

How does a fluorescent bulb work?

• The excited mercury atoms release their excess energy in the form of ultraviolet (UV) light (humans can’t see this)

• The energy of the UV light is absorbed by the phosphor, which emits visible light

• These light bulbs are 20% efficient, meaning 20% of the energy it uses is converted into light
