Absorbable Sutures

Absorbable sutures as the name suggests areabsorbable in nature, which are broken downwithin the tissues and absorbed to the body after aperiod of time, which can be from ten days to eightweeks. And hence it is mainly used in the internaltissues of the body.

Applications of For Obs & Gynaecs –Procedures –

Hysterectomy (Closing the vaginal vault after removing the uterus).

C section – To close the uterus after delivering the baby.

General procedures like kidney operation (closure of muscles of abdominal wall), Repair of incisional and ventral Hernias, Chest wall closure.

Apart from the above it is also used by Plastic surgeons, Pediatric surgeons & Urologists.

HINCRYLSynthetic absorbable

Polyglycolic acid (PGA) sutures

Pronounced tissue reaction in-vivo using natural absorbables

Tissue reaction is less using Synthetic absorbables

Page 14: Types of Absorbable Sutures

CharacteristicsCopolymer of lactide and polyglycolide

Synthetic absorbable braided suture

Coated for easy tissue passage, precise knot placement and smooth tie down

The water repelling quality of lactide slows down the loss of tensile strength and the bulkiness of lactide leads to rapid absorption of the suture once the tensile strength is lost.

Causes minimal tissue reaction

Absorption time is 56-70 days

Characteristics•Hincoryl is a synthetic, monofilament absorbable suture. It is composedof poliglecaprone 25, which is a copolymer of glycolide and epsilon-caprolactone. It comes both dyed (violet) and undyed (clear).

•Monocryl has a low tissue reactivity, maintains high tensile strength, andhas a half-life of 7 to 14 days. At 1 week, its in vivo tensile strength is at50-60% undyed, (60-70% dyed), at 2 weeks its 20-30% undyed (30-40% dyed).

•Completely hydrolyzed by 91–119 days. It is rarely used for percutaneousskin closure, and is not used in areas of high tension (e.g. fascia).

•It is generally used for soft-tissue approximation and ligation. It is usedfrequently for subcuticular dermis closures of the face. It has less of atendency to exit through the skin after it breaks down, such asPolyglactin 910. It is for usage in ophthalmic and microsurgery. Also usedin Gastro intestinal areas, Oral mucosa and bowel anastomosis.
