Welcome to Tynedale’s143rd season. It is anhonour and pleasure togreet all our players, supporters, sponsors andvisitors to the magni-ficent surroundings ofTyne dale Park. This year

our visiting opposition have come from as farafield as Hereford and Birmingham, somewhatstretching the imagination of being in a Northernleague but nevertheless we look forward to ourtwo overnight away trips. On the field we are againcoached by Ben Woods and his fantastic teamand our first XV are led once more by MattyOutson.

During the summer we said goodbye to a numberof players as well as former player, and latterlycoach, Matt Fieldhouse. We thank them for theirtime at Tynedale and wish them success in theirnew ventures.

The Raiders and Centurions will undoubtedly betargeting cup wins this year and our Veterans sidecontinues to challenge the laws of physiology. The youth and female sections have enjoyed

notable success in recent seasons and I expectthis year to be no different with a huge amount ofcoaching talent and support on hand. Indeed, several international players have already grownfrom their ranks of late.

As with any amateur club the success of theteams is reflected to a degree by the strength ofthe organisation and I am humbled by the numbersof volunteers we have to call on so to all of you Isay a huge thank you and well done.

I must congratulate my predecessor Ian Lewiswho has handed over the presidential reigns infine form and to the management team who workextremely hard to ensure the Tynedale experiencemeets your expectations.

Finally, whatever may have brought you toour wonderful rugby club, I hope your day isenjoyable and you take away memories thatlast a lifetime.

TYNEDALE R.F.C. Season 2019-20TYNEDALE R.F.C. Season 2019-20

WELCOMEIT is always a pleasure to welcome the players, supporters, and officials of Fylde RUFC toCorbridge. The clubs go back a long way together, and over the years there have been some thrillingencounters with the Lancashire side.Few Tynedale fans will forget that it was at Fylde that Tynedale prop Ali Johnson broke hisneck in a scrummaging accident at the Woodland Memorial Ground, or the supportreceived from the Fylde club in the wake of the tragedy.Fylde have made an excellent start to the season, with three wins and a draw in theiropening four games, a record which had taken them to a deserved second spot in NationalLeague Division Two North.Tynedale have not made such a good start, coming out on the wrong side of two highscoring defeats before drawing their last home game with Otley 33-33.They achieved their first win on Saturday inflicting the first defeat of the season on fanciedSedgley Tigers, winning 12-7 away from home and will be hoping to keep up the improvedform today.

EARLY FRUSTRATION AT AN ENDAFTER three games without a win, Tynedale’s director ofrugby Ben Woods was delighted to get that all important firstvictory under his belt at Sedgley Park.He said: “It was great for the squad to achieve the first winof the season last weekend. The games leading up to it hadbeen tight and everyone was frustrated to not get a victoryso to come out on the right side of a tight score-line againstSedgley was pleasing.“Ultimately the weather conditions dictated how we neededto play on the day and the team executed the game planeffectively. “Our opponents today are in very good form being unbeaten so far this season. They havethe ability to play a wide expansive game but, as they showed in our fixture at Woodlandslast season, they are adept at playing territory and squeezing the opposition set-piece. “As ever we've been working hard this week in preparation for what we know will be atough fixture but look forward to embracing the challenges it will present.”

PREVIOUS MATCHES BETWEEN THE TWO CLUBS Tynedale’s first visit to Fylde’s Woodlands Memorial Ground was a friendly, played on the10th February 1990. Tynedale’s team that day included Mark Richard, currently president ofthe Northumberland Rugby Union, Gary Taylor and Graham Yates, both newly elected Vice-Presidents of Tynedale RFC Also in the side were Steve Dunn and Richard Parker (thecaptain that season), who have sons Graeme and Robert playing for Tynedale this season.Tynedale’s next visit was on the 13th September 2003 which followed Fylde’s relegation fromNational Division 2 (with Kendal and Launceston). After Mike Scott had kicked the homeside into a 9-0 half-time lead with three penalties Ben Duncan scored a try for Tynedale

Ben Woods

converted by Andrew Murray. Later Phil Belgian kicked a penalty for the visitors andconverted a try by Keith Johnson leaving the home side needing two scores.Left winger Ben Godfrey scored a late try for Fylde in injury time which Scott converted, butthis left Tynedale the winners in a close 16-17 match.Fylde’s first visit to Tynedale Park on the 3rd April 2004 ended in a turn around, with a 10-23win for the visitors, with Mike Scott (fly-half) dropping a goal and Mark Evans (winger) andRichard Kenyon (full-back) scoring tries. Scott converted the tries and kicked two penalties.Tyne’s points came from a Jake White try and a penalty and conversion from Phil Belgian.N.B. After 19 minutes of that match Tom Wilkinson (now one of Tynedale’s coaches) dartedacross the field to clear a dangerous kick through from Mike Scott and his momentum senthim crashing into the advertising boards, and out of the game.12.02.05 Fylde 26 Tynedale 012.03.05 Tynedale 24 Fylde 1824.09.05 Fylde 10 Tynedale 4614.01.06 Tynedale 16 Fylde 8*16.09.06 Fylde 14 Tynedale 14

*THAT DRAWN MATCH (September 2006)Draws in rugby are fairly rare. In the last twenty years Tynedale have played 547 leaguematches; only 16(under 3%) have ended as draws. The ending of this one at Fylde was notjust unusual, but bizarre. The match was tied at 14-14 right on full time when Tynedale were awarded a penalty underthe Fylde posts. The referee indicated that this would be the last play of the match. WillMassey, Tynedale’s full-back and kicker, mistakenly thinking his side were leading 13-14proceeded to kick the ball out of play to safeguard Tyne’s“victory”, much to theconsternation of bemused players and spectators. In Will Massey’s defence we should report on happier times for him. In season 2004/05 ofthe five top goal kickers in National 3 (North), apart from Tom Rhodes of Bradford & Bingleywho had a 77.38% success rate, four Fylde and Tynedale players headed the league’skicking strike-rate table. Paul Green for Fylde (69.23%) and the aforesaid Will Massey(68.25%) throughout that season proved extremely capable deputies to the injury-plaguedfront-line kickers, Mike Scott for Fylde (73.47%) and Tynedale’s Phil Belgian who had a73.33% success rate.LATER LEAGUE MATCHES BETWEEN TYNEDALE AND FYLDE06.01.07 Tynedale 28 Fylde 601.09.07 Fylde 7 Tynedale 2519.04.08 Tynedale 22 Fylde 7There was a three-season gap from April 2008 until October 2011 when the two clubs didnot meet in league fixtures, although the teams played in a pre-season match at theWoodlands in August 2008.When fixtures were renewed in 2011 the first match at Fylde was a very fine match whichthe home side won 39-28. Of the Tynedale squad that day four remain eight years later,Matty Outson, Graeme Dunn, Jonny Cousin and Tom Bramwell.

OLD BOY CONNECTIONSFylde play in claret, gold and white, which were really the colours of HUDDERSFIELD OLDBOYS (Huddersfield RUFC after 1946). It seems to be a mystery why these colours werechosen, but they have remained the same as Huddersfield’s ever since, but with a differentdesign. In season 1934/35 Fylde RFC was strengthened by the merger with BLACKPOOL OLD BOYS.The ‘Old Boy’ tag became something of an anachronism for open rugby clubs, so for mostclubs the suffix has been dropped over the years.

TYNEDALE R.F.C. Season 2019-20

BORN ON THE TOSS OF A COINFYLDE Rugby Club was born literally on the toss of a coin. On July 25th 1919 Manchesterbusinessmen met at the Ansdell Institute to discuss the formation of either a rugby or footballclub. A coin was tossed and it fell in favour of rugby. From such small beginnings, Fylde grewand after 95 years it is a nationally respected club and a strong brand name in English rugby. It was in May 1920 that the present Woodlands site, was used for rugby. In those days theadmission was 5d and the first yearly gate receipts amounted to just over £57. As far back as 1924 Fylde were represented in the Lancashire team by many famous namessuch as ‘Ham’ Neville, who was capped 33 times, and ‘Pop’ Ogden, who was classed as thegreatest kicker of the time. He was the originator of the ‘round the corner’ style of kickingnow used by more or less all kickers worldwide. The Club was strengthened by the mergerwith Blackpool Old Boys in 1934/5.Unfortunately, during the 2nd World War, Fylde had to close (as did many clubs) as the Armytook over the ground. In 1946 the President, Mr Parkes, welcomed back members from theForces and the 13 acres of the Woodlands Memorial Ground was purchased (for £7,000!) andnamed in honour of the members who had given their lives during the six year period. The club’s two most famous players were both home grown. Malcolm Phillips, a product ofArnold School, Blackpool, won 25 England caps at centre between 1958 and 1964. He wasPresident of the RFU in 2004/5 and served on the International Rugby Board for a number ofyears.Bill Beaumont was also a one club man having joined Fylde as a 17 year old in 1969 andstaying with the club until injury forced him to retire in 1982. His father played for Fylde andhe wrote to the Club suggesting that his son be given a trial. His first game was in the sixthteam as full back. When they looked at the size of Bill and saw his 6’3” height, he was veryquickly made into a forward to play for the first XV team. He earned 34 England caps, 21 ascaptain. And he led the side to the Grand Slam in 1980, as well as skippering the British Lionsin South Africa. In retirement he has remained in the public eye as broadcaster andcolumnist. He is still a regular face at Fylde and much respected throughout the Club.He has also made a major contribution to rugby administration in the UK and internationallyas IRB member, with the RFU and was manager of the British Lions touring party to NewZealand in 2005. In the same era as Bill, a young Roger Uttley, subsequently skipper and thenmanager of England, and Brian Ashton, one of England’s leading coaches, also wore theclaret and gold. Other more recent internationals associated with Fylde include Englandwingers Tony Swift and Simon Smith, who were capped in the 1980s after leaving the club, and locks Steve Bainbridge and Wade Dooley, established internationals who won furthercaps whilst with Fylde.

FIRST VICTORY GROUND OUT IN THE WETSedgley Tigers 7, Tynedale 12 on September 28thMANCHESTER is famous for its rain, and the city lived up to its reputation in no uncertainterms when Tynedale came calling, but the torrential downpours failed to put a dampeneron Tynedale’s day as they battled to their first NationalLeague DivisionTwo North victory ofthe season against the strong Sedgley Tigers .After two defeats and a draw in their three opening games, Tynedale headed down to

Page 17: Tynedale Rugby TYNEDALE Football Club - Amazon S3

Whitefield with some trepidation, as the Tigers had wonall three of their openers to lie second in the table.Indeed, they had won all 11matches since Tynedalehammered them 46-28 in this fixture last season. ButTynedale turned the form book on its head with amagnificent display in horrendous conditions to claimfour valuable points.Tynedale rang the changes from the home draw withOtley, with Guy Pike returning on the left wing, ChrisWearmouth back in the second row and Jake Rodgersstarting at fly half. Michael Hughes came into the frontrow and there was a start in the back row for JoeRichards. The weather and a very heavy pitch meant open rugbywas out of the question, and the sides slugged it out inthe mud for a dour first half, where ball retention was ata premium and dropped balls all too frequent. Thescoreboard stayed blank until the 35th minute whencentre Liam Checksfield managed to find a way throughfor the opening try. However, the score came at a price, for the youngsterinjured himself in scoring, and had to be replaced by WIllHaydon-Wood. The try was converted by Rodgers to give Tynedale a 7-0interval lead. Tynedale extended their lead 11 minutesinto the second period when Joe Richards showed greatpower and persistence in chasing down a kick to make it12-0.However, the home side hit back nine minutes later with a try through winger JamieHarrison who showed blistering pace down the wing to provide the hosts with a lifeline.Fly-half Steve Collins was successful with the conversion to close the gap to 12-7 butTynedale showed great maturity to see the game out, and climb to 10th in the table.

TYNEDALE HELD BY YORKSHIRE RIVALS

Tynedale 34, Otley 34 on September 21stA HEADY mix of well taken tries and calamitous defending saw Tynedale held to a draw byYorkshire side Otley at a sun-baked Tynedale Park.So after three games, they are still looking for their first victory in National League DivisionTwo North.Despite being the league’s second highest scorers with 96 points, they also have the secondleakiest defence. having conceded 106 points, and so languish fifth from the bottom of thetable. While Tynedale ran in six tries and and picked up three points, director of rugby Ben Woodscannot have been happy with the number of missed tackles, knock ons and poor covering.

They were without a number of regulars, with half a dozen teenagers called intoaction, with varying degrees of success.Among the successes was 19-year-oldCallum Pascoe, who started on the rightwing, but later switched to his favouredposition of scrum half, allowing the versatileMatty Outson to display his majestic talentsat fly half. What an asset to the club the skipper is,whether it is his accurate passing, astutekicking or his pulverising tackling. For the first time this season, the pack wereoutgunned by the weighty Otley pack for much of the game, although things improved lateron, notably when brothers Joe and Charlie Richards - sons of Newcastle Falcons boss Dean- joined the fray.Tynedale went behind to a penalty from the 10 metre line by Otley fly half Ben Smith withjust two minutes gone. For the next 20 minutes though, the Yorkshiremen were penned intheir own 22 by waves of Tynedale attacks, but the Northumbrians lacked penetration as theerror count built up and on a rare visit to Tynedale territory, Otley extended their lead froma penalty scrum, when lock Brett Mitchell got the touchdown to a forward drive, Smithconverting after 27 minutes. With half-time looming, Tynedale finally got on the scoresheet from a well-worked forwarddrive, with lock Graeme Dunn the scorer and the last play of the half saw Outson producea dazzling break before popping the ball up for full back Rob Parker to score a good try, converted by 18-year-old fly half Will Haydon Wood to give Tynedale a 12-10 half time lead. The advantage was stretched to 17-10 five minutes into the second half when centre LiamChecksfield showed electrifying acceleration to go over for the third try.Otley came roaring back with a well workedtry by left wing Henry Roberts on 54 minutes,Smith converting, before a wave of Outson’smagic wand sent Pascoe in for Tynedale’sbonus point try, replacement Jake Rodgers’conversion giving Tynedale a 24-17 lead. Itlasted just two minutes, before the Tynedaledefence opened up like the Red Sea for fullback Ben Magee to go in for a converted tryto level things up. More weak tackling allowed Otley to goahead with Roberts grabbing his second tryon the hour, but Parker’s second try forTynedale restored parity on 66 minutes. The pendulum swung the visitors’ way whena yawning defence allowed centre Elliott

Morgan to dot down on 70 minutes for a 34-29 lead, but after a thunderous forward driveprop Ben Haigh bustled in to make it 34-34 with six minutes left.Rodgers might have won it for Tynedale from the tee but his conversion attempt driftednarrowly wide at the last minute.

EXCEPTIONAL RAIDERS PERFORMANCE

Tynedale Raiders 26, Harrogate 2nd XV 5Tynedale Raiders bounced back to winning ways in style following their Tuesday night closeloss to a Durham University outfit. The Raiders were again stretched in terms of their squaddepth, with 1st XV call-ups and injuries taking their toll. In contrast, Harrogate arrived at Tynedale with a full 22-man complement, bolstered by their1st XV game at Carlisle being postponed, so they will have fancied their chances of takingaway the points in this opening round of the Northern Pilot League. The game was played out in near perfect conditions and on an exceptional 1st XV surfacewhich is testament to the work of groundsman Peter Simpson and his team. The Raiders kickedoff with the breeze at their backs and the autumn sun off their shoulder. However, it was theHarrogate side who started the brighter with a series of strong carries by their sizeable back-row. The early signs for Tynedale looked ominous, however an excellent scramble defencefrom the Raiders to prevent an almost certain score seemed to galvanise the side. After 20 minutes of play, having absorbed a number of Harrogate attacks, the Raiders foundthemselves with a decent spell of possession in the Harrogate half and following over 20phases of controlled play and close quarter drives, they moved the ball wide for wingerCallum Morrell to dive in, a superb touchline conversion from Cam Grant making it 7-0.With less than 5 minutes of the second half played, Harrogate managed to break free fromhalf-way and ran a score into the corner through their three-quarters which they wereunable to convert, 7-5. Similarly to the first half, the next period was all Harrogate but theRaiders tackling and competitiveness at the break-down was superb and the Yorkshire sidecould not find a way through. When Tynedale did get some phases of possession they moved the ball wide for CallumMorrell to once again squeeze in the corner, this time Grant was unable to convert, 12-5.The next score was always going to be crucial and it was the Raiders who now looked themore likely against the bigger and heavier opposition. The excellent John Clarkson snipedthrough a gap at a ruck base on the opposition 10m line, and beating several defenders withquick feet dived in under the posts for Grant to convert, 19-5 with 15 minutes left to play.Harrogate were not giving up and continued to hammer their heavy ball carriers intocontact. Again, the tackling was exceptional by all with Ed Craney in particular leading theway with a fine demonstration of low and hard chop-tackling.On 33 minutes a fine break by outside centre, and man of the match Rory Cramb, got theRaiders deep into Harrogate territory. From the ensuing set piece, the Tynedale team wentthrough a number of drives close to the line and Dicky Dunn eventually broke through toscore, again converted by Grant. 26-5 the final score line. All in all, this was Tynedale Raiders finest team performance for some seasons withspectators treated to a hard, disciplined and skilful display. The whole squad can be reallyproud of their efforts.
