’n Egpaar van Ruyterwacht se huis isheeltemaal verwoes in ’n brand watvermoedelik deur tikkoppe gestig is.

André en Sue van Eck van Hugenote-straat het Maandag huilend tussen die puinvan die huis gestaan wat hulle oor 26 jaaropgebou het. Veral Sue was ontroosbaar.

Volgens André is hulle Sondag omstreeks05:00 deur die getoeter van ’n taxiwakker ge-maak. “Ek het wakker geword toe ek hooriemand roep my naam. Dit was ’n ou wat oppad werk toe was, en gesien het my huisbrand. Toe ek opstaan, het ek gesienmyhuisis besig om te brand,” vertel André, waar hyop die plek staan wat eens sy voorhuis was.Hulle moes so gou moontlik die huis ont-

ruim en Sue het genoeg tyd gehad om die

honde uit te laat. “Was dit nie vir een ouwathier naby bly nie, het ons dit dalk nie ge-maak nie. Hy het die venster met ’n klip uit-gegooi. Ek kon weens die rook niks voor mysien nie en het nog gehoor hoe my televisie-stel ontplof,” sê André.André glo nie die brand is ’n ongeluk nie.

“Hier is gedurig tikkoppe wat langs my hei-ning sit en dwelms gebruik. Ek was al seskeer by die polisie en het al self die tikkoppe

verwilder. Ná ek hulle by ’n vorige geleent-heid weggejaag het, het hulle my gedreig engesê hulle gaan my terugkry. So twee wekegelede het ek ’n gebrande stuk koerantpa-pier in my agterplaas gekry. Dit was vir my’n teken dat die ouens ernstig is en vir my’n waarskuwing wou gee. Dan en daar hetek besluit om hulle uit te los, maar dit wasklaarblyklik te laat,” sê André.

men took part in the shooting.The bar – at 34 Connaught Road – is more

showed them the latest developments.For this year’s event we invited childrenfrom disadvantaged areas and gave theman insight into the Air Force. We com-bined the aviation team and also invitedthe Bloodhound supersonic car team tofocus on various aspects,” he says.The Bloodhound project is a global en-

gineering adventure aimed at creating acar that will attempt to break the worldland speed record to inspire the next gen-eration to enjoy andexplore science, tech-nology, engineering and mathematics.DeCastro explains thiswas to give chil-

neem, terwyl ’n tweede nog op vrye voetis.TygerBurger het die toneel besoek

verskeie winkels by mense afgeneem.Faizel Adams, voorsitter van die buurt-

wag, sê die mense wat die trollies stootmaak hulle baie keer aan misdaad skul-dig. “Hulle maak asof hulle haweloses is,maar eintlik gebruik hulle die trollies omgoed te vervoer wat hulle gesteel het. Ditis mosmakliker om ’n platskerm-televisiein ’n trollie te vervoer as om dit self tedra,” sê Adams.Volgens hom word die trollies ook ge-

bruik om rommel te strooi. “Inwoners vradie trolliestoters om vullis na ’n stortings-terrein te neem, maar hulle gooi dit som-mer net op straathoeke neer. Ons het be-sluit om die trolliestoters nou uit die dorpte kry. Sommige van hulle loop om 02:00rond met trollies. Daar is nie daardie tydnog ’n winkel oop nie, so dit is net ommoeilikheid te maak,” sê Adams.Ná beslag op die trollies gelê is, gaan dit

na die polisiekantoor geneem word, van-waar dit deur die wettige eienaars afge-haal kan word. Sers. Esmirelda Pheifer,polisie-woordvoerder, sê dit is onwettigom ’n winkeltrollie te besit. “Ons weet nievan winkeltrollies wat aan privaat mensebehoort nie. In die algemeenword dit deurgroot winkelgroepe besit.”

Two Gugulethu men got more than theybargained for during a burglary in Ta-ble View last week.

According to a report from Table Viewpolice, at about 05:30 on Wednesday 7 Octo-ber the two men were arrested for housebreaking using a rented vehicle.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant AdrianChandler says crime intelligence informa-tion was relayed to Flying Squad officersabout a hired silver Volkswagen Polowhich has been reported for being involvedin various house break-ins across the West-ern Cape, was spotted.

The vehicle was fitted with a trackingsystem, and with the help of the trackingcompany the whereabouts of the vehiclecould be communicated with police andshortly after 05:00 it was traced to Park-lands.

“With this information, the two FlyingSquad officers, Captain Pieter Dempers andConstable Shaun May, diverted to the N7

freeway towards Table View. On route themembers were informed that the vehiclewas on the move again towards Goodwood.The members observed the vehicle on thebridge opposite GrandWest Casino in Good-wood.”

Chandler explains one of the men waspushing the vehicle while the second wassteering.

“The officers approached the vehiclewith caution and alerted the two men thatthey were from the police. The men calmlysubmitted to the officers.

“Inside the vehicle they noticed a largeamount of linen. The linen was identifiedas the property of a company called White-house, and Table View police confirmedthat they were attending to a burglary atthis company that took place a short whilebefore.”

The men were arrested and the vehiclelinked to burglaries in the Cape Town Cen-tral police precinct.

On Thursday 8 October Goodwood policeofficers arrested two suspects for house-breaking.At about 13:40 Warrant Officer Trevor

Vester and Sergeant André Abrahams re-sponded to a complaint of housebreakingin progress inMolteno Street. On their ar-rival on the scene the members saw thatthe front security gate had been removed.

They proceeded around the back of thehouse and saw two suspects fleeing. Themembers managed to arrest the 27 and 40-year-old suspects.

The members further noticed that thehouse was vacant and had been vandal-ised.

Motorists should check the renewaldates for their vehicles and not waitfor a notice.

According to a statement by the City ofCape Town, the National Department ofTransport’s (DOT) transfer of the Electron-ic National Traffic Information System (eN-aTIS) to the Road Traffic management cen-tre is affecting motorists whose licencediscs have expired at the end of Septemberand are renewable by Wednesday 21 Octo-ber.

This transfer has resulted in motoristsnot receiving notices to renew their annualmotor vehicle licences.

Furthermore, motorists whose licencediscs will expire on Saturday 31 Octoberand are renewable by Saturday 21 Novem-ber will also not be receiving renewal noti-

ces.You can renew your licence online by vi-

siting www.capetown.gov.za, search forE-services and go to Motor Vehicle Licens-ing. You can also visit your local licensingoffice. As a rule, motorists receive a 21-daygraceperiod inwhich to renew their licencediscs from the end of their renewal period.

“We are doing everything in our powerto ease the discomfort of motorists and tocome up with mitigating measures. We askthat the DOT and the Road Traffic Manage-ment Centre resolve the transfer of the eNa-TIS as soon as possible and that this prob-lem is sorted out before November, whichis traditionally the busiest month of theyear for motor vehicle disc renewals,” saysCity mayoral committee member for fi-nance, Ian Neilson.

I refer to the letter by RonelButton (“What can we do tohelp”, TB, 7 October). How is itpossible that Ronel “could nothave comprehended thedifficulties and sadness” linkedto poverty? Where have youbeen all your life – sitting inyour clean house with yourbelly full?

Poverty is all around us. Youdon’t have to go visit someonein a shack to know howterribly sad it is and only thenrealise these people need help.It’s always been there andalways will be. I agree it is sadto look into the eyes of ahungry child and these chil-dren I will gladly help. Theirmothers I don’t really havesympathy for. Why on earthwould someone who lives in ashack insist on having childrenwhen you know you can’tprovide for them?

Daar is1 024 huisbraaksake aangemeldvir die jaar. Dit is statistiek watons almal raak en wat onsalmal met ’n onveilige gevoellaat.

Waaraan sou die stygingtoegeskryf word? Is dit ’ngebrek aan lede, ’n gebrek aanvoertuie of is dit ’n gebrek aanproduktiewe bestuur van lede?

Sou dit dalk te wyte wees aandie feit dat daar by herhalingverskeie dae per week slegs eenof twee voertuie per skof aandiens is vir die grootste gedeel-te van die skof in Kuilsrivierom ’n area van amper 73 km² tediens, te patrolleer en klagtesby te woon of is die kriminelemaar net een te veel vir diepolisie?

Please, turnoff yourcellphoneOur lives have become intrinsicallylinked with technology. Not feeling theweight of a cellphone in your pocketleaves you feeling vulnerable, naked.

While we’re more connected than everbefore, we’ve forgotten how to trulyconnect with those around us. How oftendo you sit around a table with friends,with at least one person (if not all ofthem) glued to their phones?

When did we forget our manners?When did it become socially acceptable toignore your dinner company to reply to atext message or to answer emails whilein a meeting?

And surely switching your phone offduring an event, concert, movie, weddingor church service should be a basiccourtesy. Yet we regularly find theromantic love scene in a movie or eventhe vows of a bride and groom interrupt-ed by the chirping of a phone.

What does it say about us as a societythat money has to be spent on advertis-ing to ensure cellphones are turned offbefore a movie and priests have to startsermons by asking that cellphones beswitched off?

It speaks to a lack of respect for othersthat we can’t even manage simplecellphone etiquette. It’s really simple: ifyou wouldn’t talk during the event,others shouldn’t hear your cellphone.

It’s a courtesy that we should expendwithout thinking, as simple as sayingplease or thank you.

AWest Beach resident has received oneof the highest honours in the conti-nent’s film industry.

Tonie van derMerwe, once dubbed the fa-ther of the “black” film industry in SouthAfrica, received the Lifetime Achievementawardat theAfricaMovieAcademyawardsin Port Elizabeth.Van der Merwe created some 400 films in

the 1970s and ’80s, including Joe Bullet, oneof the country’s first all-black cast films.His movies launched the careers of many

African actors and nurtured a generationof African film technicians and productionhands. The majority of his films were dis-tributed by means of an informal rural dis-tribution network, reaching audiences esti-mated at well over hundreds of thousandsof viewers.In 1973 the South African film Joe Bullet

was banned by the apartheid governmentafter its second screening at the Eyethu cin-ema in Soweto. Though the ban was laterlifted, producers never pursued another re-lease until 2013.The filmpremiered at the 2014Durban In-

ternational FilmFestival. It also featured atthe To Save and Project film preservationfestival in New York in November last yearbefore being screened at theCarthage inter-national film festival in Tunisia, and the65th Berlinale film festival in February2015.Established in 2005, AMAA aims to facili-

tate the development and relevance of Afri-can filmandcinemabyprovidinga rewardsand recognition platform for filmmakers onthe continent.African filmmakerswork hardwith very

spiring.” A mixture of country and gospel,the upcoming album tells the story of herown personal journey of restorationthrough the Lord.While she had many songs to choose

from, she made her choices for the albumjust before going into studio with producerDamianRoman.The result is analbumLyd-ia says will encourage people all over.She says music is in her blood. Her aunt

was a tap dancer and she recalls watchingone of her concerts as a child, saying that

shewas captured by the art of performance.Her grandfather was also a musician, aswere her three brothers.A neighbour who heard her singing with

her brother one day, spoke a blessing overher voice and talents. “Those beautifulwords followme,” she says, adding that shegives God all the glory for her abilities.Like many writers, it was love that moti-

vated Lydia to begin writing. She startedwith a story about a child-hood love, the same lovethat later inher life inspired70 poems in three days. Oneof these, “Down memorylane” was even published ina poetry anthology.As with her poetry, Lyd-

ia’s songs come straightfrom the heart, telling sto-ries that cover the full spec-trum of human emotions –from lost love to hope andunexpected luck.She is constantly writing,

sometimes working onthree songs at a time, butwhen she isn’t making mu-sic, Lydia is also a painter.Some of her work will be ex-hibited before her perform-

ance at the Upper Hall Church.When she isn’t living out her creative

impaired children, many of them sufferingfrom eye abnormalities as a result of FoetalAlcohol Syndrome (FAS), were treated toMaya theBee at Ster-KinekorCapeGate, hav-ing discovered their newfound vision.For these little five to seven-year-olds, this

was their first cinema experience after re-ceiving either spectacles or eye surgery.“Growth inside the retina is affected by

FAS, resulting in these children having se-vere vision impairment. Some of them canbe helped by means of spectacles or in moresevere cases surgery if detected earlyenough,” France Nxumalo from the BrienHaden Vision Institute in Durban told Tyg-erBurger on Thursday.The institute is currently in the process of

expanding their work to the Western Capewinelands and has teamed up with localNPO My Little Eye.“We go to wine farms to screen the chil-

dren of farmworkers for vision impairment.

We then refer them to clinics and institu-tions such as Brien Haden to assist themwith the help they might need,” says Ramo-na Lubbe from My Little Eye.Since 2005, Ster-Kinekor, through their

flagship social investment programme Vi-sion Mission, has partnered with strategicpartners to help children such as these.“Vision Mission has for the past 10 years

tomake lifehell for residents in thenorthernsuburbs of Cape Town. But the City saysthey are ready for this onslaught.Since invading the far northern suburbs

of the city several years ago, the species –said to have made their appearance in KuilsRiver in 2010 – have plagued households.“Since the launch of the invasive wasp

control (IWC) teams in 2014, the City has re-moved 8 000 European paper wasp nests,mostly from areas such as Durbanville,Kuils River, Brackenfell, Kraaifontein, Bell-ville andBothasig and are ready to assist thepublic,” says Mayco member for energy, en-vironmental and spatial planning, Johanvan der Merwe. According to him the waspseason usually occurs during warmer peri-ods, from September to May.Both alien invasive wasp species, the Eu-

ropean paper wasp (polistes dominula) andthe German wasp (vespula germanica) arelisted as a category 1b invasive species in theAlien and Invasive Species regulations inthe National Environmental ManagementBiodiversity Act.“This means that scientists have agreed

that the wasps, by law, have to be removedas they pose a threat to the local ecosystemand several important industries such as de-ciduous fruit, wine and bee keeping indus-tries,” says Van der Merwe.Cape Town residents are advised to be

aware that the sting from thesewasps is par-ticularly painful.

“To be part of a 75th anniversary isalways special, but to be part of amemorial event of that period in

time is really special.”So says Barrie Jones, treasurer and chor-ister of the Cape Welsh Choir. The all-malegroup will be presenting a very special con-cert to commemorate the 75th anniversaryof the Battle of Britain on Wednesday 28 Oc-tober.The choir has been presenting an annualcommemorative concert at the Simon’sTown Naval Base Church for the last 15years and has a long standing relationshipwith the organisers, the RAF Association ofSouth Africa.With the 75th anniversary being “quite amilestone”, this year’s concert will be some-thing very special.“For us it’s a big departure,” Barrie says,explaining that they would normally go onstage and sing in theWelshmale voice choirstyle.This time round, the Cape Welsh Choirhas put a full production or showcase togeth-er in the spirit of reflecting the “era and cir-cumstances” of the period around WorldWar Two.The concert takes place against the back-drop of a specially-built set that recreates atypical bomb shelter in the London Under-groundwith the choir dressed in clothes typ-ical of the era.“It sounds dramatic maybe, but they werehard times, so there are no pink shirts forexample. It’s all very staid, working-classstuff.”They’ll be singing medleys of a selectionof well-known songs from the time. “All ofthose songswere used to embolden that spir-it of resistance.” Barrie explains that musicwas used inWorldWarTwo to unifyBritain.

Many of the songs were popularised by “theforce’s sweetheart”, Vera Lynn.SouthAfrican soloist Yvette Elliott will bebringing her songs back to life, completewith period costumes. For a bit of variation,they’ll be joined by the “rousing” Cape FieldArtillery Pipes and Drums as well as guestsfrom the UK: the RAF Salon Orchestra withtheir big band sound and theQueen’s ColourSquadron with their precision marchingdisplay.All of this will be neatly threaded togetherwith a “well-constructed” narrative put to-gether by Reverend Ralph Thornley, a keenamateur historian. “He’s got a wealth of in-formation and knowledge.”Thornley’s narrative will tell the story ofthe four months of the Battle of Britain, in-

terspersed with audio visual clips to helprecreate the atmosphere around the war.“I think it’s going to be a very special occa-sion,” says Barrie, adding: “It’s going to bea once in a lifetime opportunity.”Made up of members from all over theCape Peninsula, the Cape Welsh Choir haspresented more than 800 concerts in its 33year existence. “So, we’ve got a few mile-stones of our own.”The choir’s primary focus is on fund-rais-ing for third parties and so far they’ve beenable tohelpotherorganisations raise anesti-mated R3 million.Three members – Alan Thompson fromPinelands, Ian Jones from Table View andFreddieAhern fromBrackenfell – have beenwith the choir since the very beginning.

Die meerderheid van die geld is egter el-ders in die land aangewend, en juis daarompoog Hennie Rossouw, bestuurder van Soli-dariteit Helpende Hand se Wes-Kaapseskenkingskantoor in Kraaifontein en be-stuurslid van die Wes-Kaapse streekstudie-fonds, om die werksaamhede van dié fondsin Kaapstad te bevorder.

Sowat 150 gaste uit verskeie gemeenskap-pe in Kaapstad het die afgelope Saterdag ’nspesiale geleentheid op die Bloemendal-wynlandgoed ter ondersteuning van diefonds bygewoon.

“Hoe meer bewusmaking ons oor diefonds in die Wes-Kaap kan skep, hoe meerstudente sal ons kan help,” sê Hennie.

Die fonds is in 2012 onder die vaandel vandie Solidariteit-studiefondssentrum gestigen bestuur tans 164 individuele studiefond-se landswyd.

“Die doel van hierdie fonds is om sovermoontlik deur middel van rentevrye le-nings behoeftige studente die geleentheid tebied om verder te gaan studeer.”

In 2012 is 564 lenings uitgereik, gevolgdeur 693 in 2013 en 948 in 2014. Die meerder-heid van die lenings is egter in ander delevan die land uitgereik, omdat die fondse fi-nansieel afgebaken word.

“Daar is tans 3 000 aansoeke vir die vol-gende jaar en dis ons droom om al 3 000 leer-ders van oor die land heen te kan help,” sêhy.

Volgens Rossouw is daar tans ’n groot be-hoefte om veral die fonds in Kaapstad en dieWes-Kaap uit te brei.

Volgens Rossouw kon die fonds nog net25 kinders in die Wes-Kaapstreek help, enhang die getal kinders wat jaarliks gehelpword af van die hoeveelheid fondse wat be-skikbaar is.

“Maar die behoefte in Kaapstad alleen isoorweldigend. Ons kry op ’n gereelde basishulpkrete van families uit veral Kraaifon-tein, Parow, Brackenfell, Bellville en Melk-bosstrand, maar geld wat elders in die landingesamel word, word daar aangewend.”

Rossouw poog om die Wes-Kaap se streek-fonds in die komende jare op te bou virplaaslike studente.

“Fondse is beperk. Daarom moet ons ditdeur die jaar aanvul met bykomende fonds-insamelingsprojekte en geleenthede,” enhy voeg by dat verdere studies nie meer ’nkeuse is nie, maar ’n noodsaaklikheid.

Volgens Rossouw kan voornemende stu-dente gehelp word uit die sentrale streek-fonds of deur middel van ’n onafhanklikedonateur wat die studente befonds. Solida-riteit sal slegs sulke fondse administreer.

“Daar is soveel goeie geleenthede in onsland; ons kinders moet net besef dat oplei-ding die deure oopmaak tot ’n beter toe-koms.”

The annual Cape inter-provincial figureskating championship will take placeat the ice rink at GrandWest from Fri-

day to Sunday.This promises to be a bumper event with

entries streaming in from all skating re-gions.Approximately 120 skaters are expect-ed.The competition comprises solo skating

where the skater performs required ele-ments of their own – including jumps and

spins – to music, as well as pair skating andsynchronized skating where a team of 12 to16 skaters perform in unison to music witha variety of lifts, circles, lines and wheelswith intricate footwork.Judges from all over South Africa will be

officiating at this event, and there is an in-ternational selection meeting scheduledstraight after, where the skaters will be as-sessed for international participation andthe world championship.

The skaters are scored on a computerisedsystem with instant playback facilities, andthe judgesmake use of this to give the skaterthe best result when assessing their per-formance.Western Province is the largest skating

province and plan to enter 50 solo skaters aswell as five synchronized skating teams inan attempt to retain the inter provincial titleheld for the past 16 years. Skaters enteringthis event range from the very young (under

10 years) to senior men and women wherethe average age is 22 years, as well as adultsections with competitors over 25. Bellville amateur Altin van derMerwe continued a dream seasonwith a breakthrough victory in

the Kuils River Challenge on the IGTTour Cape last week.

The 18-year-old posted an impressivefive-under-par 67 in the final round atKuilsRiverGolf Club tomarch to a sev-en-stroke victory on 14-under-par 202.

Van der Merwe, who is a member ofthe Bellville Golf Club, denied a hostof top international visitors when heclaimed the Curro South African Jun-iors International (SAJI) at Durban-ville Golf Club in March and fivemonths later came heartbreakinglyclose to a second international victoryin the Global Junior Golf Tour’s RBGerman Junior.

He opened with a mediocre 70, butdrew on the experience gained abroadto open up a four shot lead with a blis-tering 65 in the second round.

“I was pretty disappointed with myfirst round and I knew it would take ahuge effort to get in front, especiallywith the pros in the field,” he said.

“I was a member at Kuils River for

four years, so I used everything I re-membered about the course and every-thing I learned this year to get myselfinto contention in the second round.”

Van derMerwe reeled in four birdiesto offset a lonebogeyat five on the frontnine. He traded birdies for bogeys forthe first four holes after the turn, butended the sequence with a birdie at 10.

“I overshot the green at 10 andcouldn’t up-and-down to save par, thenmade a superb up-and-down for birdieat 11. At 12, I drove it into the trees onthe right and all I could do was chipout.

“Then I hit it close to the pin at 13and boxed the putt for birdie. I over-shot the green again at 14, but this timeI made the up-and-down for birdie toend that run.”

Van der Merwe parred his way to 18,and drained a 22-footer for birdie at 18,becoming only the second amateur totriumph in the IGT Tour Cape equal-ling the lowest 54-hole total set byAdri-an Ford in the Milnerton Classic inJune.

All that mattered for the Brackenfell

High School graduate, though, was get-ting the job done.“I lost by two shots to Trevor Maho-

ney in my first IGT Tour Cape starthere at Kuils River in June, so it feelsreally good to pull it through this timearound,” Van der Merwe said.“We didn’t have that many pros in

the field this week, but it was reallynice to test myself, and to see where Irate. We’ll have to see how I do in theupcoming events at other courses, butthis kind of performance givesme a lotof confidence ahead of Q-School in De-cember.”Van der Merwe will only be able to

bank half of the first prize cheque tostay within the amateur rules, but hewasmore than happy to let the balancego to the IGT Tour Cape DevelopmentFund.“When an amateur wins, they put

the balance of the prize money into afund that is used to finance playerswhowouldn’t otherwise be able to com-pete on the IGT Tour Cape. I think thatis a really neat development initia-tive.”

is that it was the first sub-90 minutesTanya has achieved in a 21km race.Tanya, who came second in the

samerace last year, says she feltmorerelaxed and calm than ever during arace.Although it was only a week apart,

Tanya competed in the Gun Run21km on Saturday, the day after her35th birthday.“I kept the celebrations at bay until

after the race!” she quipped, addingthat normally she would not raceagain so soon. She said her legs werestiff and sore, mostly because of allthe hills in the Hermanus race, but

she will be visiting her physiothera-pist again thisweek tohelp repair herbody.

“However, it is now twoyears sinceI did the Gun Run, and I really havea bone to pick with this particularrace, as the last time I did it I wasforced to literally walk the last 5kmdue to injury.”

She completed the Gun Run in atime of 01:27:14 making her the sixthout of 2 424 female runners to crossthe line. She added that there are acouple of other track events (800m,1500m and 5000m) on the horizon, aswell as some shorter road races (10-15km).

“However, my next 21km road raceafter Saturday is theHFPAhalfmara-thon in November in Blouberg-strand.”
