hieves ransacked a hospice for termi-

nally ill children less than two weeks

after it opened its doors in Stikland.

Iris House, a mobile care and support or-

ganisation for children with a limited lifes-

pan and their families, officially opened its

new permanent hospice premises on 14

April on the Stikland Hospital grounds.

The newly revamped building a project

founded with love and serious tenacity by

Sue van der Linde became a crime statistic

    last Wednesday.

    TygerBurgerhad just thatmorningvisited

the new premises to interview Sue on Iris

Houses plans for the structure she and her

    team had brought to reality.

We had a break in last night, Sue in-

    formed TygerBurger on Thursday morning.

She said the security company was very

quick to react, but they suffered some losses.

We only lost the Mac (computer), petty

cash tin and our brand new hard drive with

all our video footage on we are praying the

company has a backup, she said.

Who steals from a Childrens Hospice?

On TygerBurgers visit, Sue provided a

tour of the premises, showing off the newly

functional spaces created during phase 1 of

    their huge clean-up operation.

The centre opened to wide media interest

on 14 April, with the Premier of theWestern

Cape, Helen Zille, unveiling the plaque.

During our visit, Sue mentioned they

needed to build a wall but for a different

reason at the time than security.

It appeared that some of the neighbours

who work with fork-lift trucks, had taken to

using the centres newly laid driveway for

    their own purposes.

The driveway isnt made for that kind of

heavy-duty wear and tear. Its meant as a

quick and easily accessible way for parents

to roll up our children who are in wheel-

    chairs, she said.

But now one of the neighbours is using

the driveway to turnhis big trucks around.

The house, as it stands on the tranquil

grounds of thehospital as a former employee

residence, was in a state of utter neglect

when Sue first laid eyes on it.

We got lost on the hospital grounds and

ended up at (this) property. I knew we had

to have it, and we did. Eventually.

The end of phase 1 of the repairs to the

house was a very long road filled with red

    tape, broken roof tiles, fingerdeepgrimeand

filth and the accompanying cockroaches, a

stolen geyser and piping, with the brasswin-

dow latches also having been stolen..

But with the help of care staff and some

of the parents and familymembers of the 155

children serviced by Iris House across the

Western Cape, the home was rebuilt with

love, care and lots of fresh paint and cement.

Every paving brick was sourced by par-

ents, as were the roof tiles. The parents

went from dumpsite to dumpsite in search

of the rooftiles. And they found them.

Then, not two weeks after the fanfare of

    the opening, the burglary happened.

Perhaps you could mention in the article

    wearedesperatelyneeding toputup thewall

and access gate for the property, Sue said.

The Rainbow and Forest rooms were spe-

cially adapted to be able to accommodate

overnight stays for the children and their

family, but Sue is taking no chances.

After this (burglary) I am not going to al-

low overnight care at the hospice until this

is done. I have to ensure the safety of our

    children and carers, she said.

Captain Fienie Nimb, spokesperson of the

Bellville police, added their voice to the cho-

rus of dismay over the incident.

A case of housebreaking is being investi-

gated. The police were at the opening func-

tion andwe strongly condemn the incident.

    Rommel kan gevare inhou

    BRENDEN RUITER

    @ruitervaniewind

n Oop stuk grond reg langs n speelpark in

Ruyterwacht het die plaaslike buurtwag be-

    kommerd, omdat rommel daar gestrooi

    word.

Op di terrein word veral bourommel en

tuinvullis, maar ook soms verrotte kos en

dooie diere, gegooi. Faizel Adams, voorsit-

ter van die buurtwag, s hierdie rommel-

strooiery kan gevare inhou vir kinders wat

    by die parkie speel.

is, kan jy lelik seerkry by vandie goed.Men-

ter probleem in Ruyterwacht. Dit is asof

mense net niemeer respekhet vir hul omge-

    wingnie.

Volgens

    Britz moet inwoners verantwoordelikheid

neem vir hul dorp. As iemand rommel

strooi, moet inwoners asseblief fotos neem

en ook die registrasienommers van motors

neerskryf. Hulle moet ook bereid wees om

teen die skuldiges te getuig. Dit is al hoe ons

di ongewenste praktyk in ons gemeenskap

    kan uitwis, s Britz.

Sypaadjie voor kleuterskool nog nie herstel

    BRENDEN RUITER

    @ruitervaniewind

n Sypaadjie voor n kleuterskool in Ruyter-

wacht is reeds verlede jaar opgelig om on-

    sypaadjie onbegaanbaar is.

    WilhemienaMartins, skoolhoof, s die sy-

paadjie is iewers in verlede jaar opgelig,

    jongkinders endit hou ngevaar invirhulle

    Martins.

Faizel Adams, voorsitter van die buurt-

wag en n bekommerde inwoner, s hy won-

der of iemand eers moet seerkry voor hulle

die sypaadjie gaan regmaak. Dit gaan my

paadjie so lank kan neem.

voltooi teword. Teendaardie tyd behoort al-

le sypaadjies herstel te wees, s hy.

The City of Cape Town has reminded resi-

dents to consider logging faults and reques-

ting services on its mobile (mobi) site.

We constantly strive to find innovative

ways of improving service levels that will sa-

ve residents valuable time andmoney. We li-

ve in a digital era where smart phones and

    othermobile devices aremore easily accessi-

ble to a larger sector of our population.

The mobi site, a web page designed for

mobile devices, is one more option available

to access City services, said the corporate

    services mayco member Xanthea Limberg.

Themobi site uptakehas been slow, but the

City hopes more residents will use it.

Of the more than 20 000 service requests

created via the eServices portal from 1 April

2014 to 31 March this year, just over 400 were

done via themobi site. The top three services

requested related to streets lights not wor-

king (30 requests), illegal structures erected

(27 requests) and blocked or overflowing se-

    wer systems (24 requests).

Residents can use the mobi site to report

faults such as potholes, water leaks, electrici-

ty failures and illegal dumping, among other

    service requests.

The mobi site can be accessed at: http://

    www.capetown.gov.za/mobi. Users should

select the Service Requests tab and go to

Create new service request. Once a request

has been chosenunder the Group tab, a few

related options will pop up under the Servi-

ce tab. Usersmay then choose themost rele-

vant service from the drop-down list.

The address details of where the fault is

and a description need to be completed on the

request. Once the contact details section has

been filled in, the request can be submitted.

Residents also have the option of uploading

    photographs.

On some mobile devices, residents logging

onto the mobi site may automatically be di-

rected to the City website homepage. Resi-

dents can still log their service requests by

choosing the eServices tab under the

Quick Links (on the right) or selecting Ser-

vice Request on the menu bar (on the left).

    City urgesmobile site use

Following the recent helicopter crash in

the Bainskloof Pass in which two fire-

fighting volunteers lost their lives, the

    important role these rescue workers

play in dousing blazing fires and saving

    lives came under the spotlight.

The two volunteers who died while

battling a fire are Darrell Rea (39) and

Jastun Visagie (23), both Working on Fi-

    re (WOF) crew members.

The two were fighting fires in the

    mountains near Wellington when their

    helicopter crashed.

Several fires have hit the Cape Penin-

sula over the last two months. One fire

which lasted for more than four days ra-

vaged great parts of the South Peninsula.

Another which lasted days broke out in

    the Jonkershoek Mountain outside Stel-

    lenbosch.

Firefighters from the City of Cape

Towns Fire and Rescue Services as well

as WOF a government funded firefigh-

ting relief and support organisation in-

curred injuries during someof these call-

    outs.

    Another group of brave individuals

who frequently put their lives in danger

    are themembers of theVolunteerWildfi-

    re Services.

Crew leader Peter Wynne said their fi-

re fighters are dedicated volunteers who

give their time to safeguard the sensitive

    biodiversity of the Western Cape.

There is no standard answer to the

question why theyve joined the Volun-

    teer Wildfire Services, he said.

    Its about passion, discipline, trai-

    ning, being with like-minded people,

    even about the adrenaline rush.

    Broadly speaking, uncontrolled fires

can be divided into structural fires and

fires in nature, he explained. Whereas

municipal fire services mostly attend to

    structural fires in buildings, Volunteer

Wildfire Services deals with fires in na-

    ture.

    Working closelywith other emergency

services in managing fire on land under

    the control of CapeNature, SANParks

    and others, Volunteer Wildfire Services

has logged over 49 000 active firefighting

    hours between its members.

Only with training, discipline and te-

amwork can we take on the challenges

    that wildfires bring.

    Our training includes, amongst

    others,wildfire suppression, firefighting

    equipment, map work, radios, 4x4

driving skills, rope work and first aid.

Referring to the most recent massive

fires that ravaged parts of the Peninsula

and Boland, Peter added: Were only

    doing what we believe in.

    rently recruiting

    otordiewe van Elsiesrivier het

    hulle vasgeloop teen n konstabel

    van die Bothasig-polisie wat nie

    glo aan kantoorure nie.

Konst. Jonathan Kriel het onlangs n

saak hanteer waar n Toyota Fortuner

gesteel is. Volgens ao. Jacques Mostert,

    woordvoerder van die

    Goodwood-polisie, het

Kriel die middag so net n

    18:00 uitgeval. Op pad

huis toe het hy n Fortuner

    langs Halt-weg in Elsiesri-

    vier gesien. Hy het onmid-

    dellik vermoed dit is die-

    selfde voertuig as die ge-

    steelde een en het

    versterking ontbied, s

    Mostert. Toe versterking

    nie betyds opdaag nie, het

    Kriel die Fortuner in sy

    private voertuig agter-

    volg. Diemotor het toe by

    n adres in Elsiesrivier

    stilgehou en Kriel het dit

    dopgehou totdat versterkings opgedaag

    het, s Mostert.

    Driemans tussen die ouderdomvan 31

    en 47 en onderskeidelik vanElsiesrivier,

Woodstock en Parow, het op aanklagte

van motordiefstal in die hof verskyn.

Kriel is nie sommer enige polisieman

nie, want sy bevelvoerder, lt.kol. Patrick

    Jacobs, stasiebevelvoerder by Bothasig,

beskryf hom as dapper. Die feit dat

Kriel n ure nog die bereidwilligheid ge-

had het om n inhegtenisneming te be-

werkstellig, wys van watter stoffasie hy

gemaak is. As sy bevelvoerder is ek baie

trots om te s hy maak deel uit van my

span.

daad. Kriel is ses jaar gelede deur n

misdadiger in die kop geskiet, maar het

    wonderbaarlik oorleef. Di voorval het

    hom nie afgeskrik nie en

hy doen steeds sy werk tot

    die beste van sy vermo.

    Kriel self s wanneer ie-

    mand by die polisie aan-

    sluit, onderneem daardie

persoon om 24 per uur per

    dag aan diens te wees.

    Ek het niks spesiaal ge-

doen nie. Vir my is dit net

    belangrik dat misdadigers

    so gou moontlik aan die

pen ry. N ek geskiet is,

probeer ek als in my ver-

mo doen om dit te be-

    werkstellig, s Kriel.

Hy s hy sal nooit die og-

    gend van 25 Januarie 2009

vergeet nie. Ek en n kollega het patrol-

lie in Bothasig gedoen toe ons tweemans

    sien stap.

my in die rug, s Kriel.

    Die aanvallers hetmet die polisievoer-

tuig weggejaag. Een is later tydens n

    mislukte transito-rooftog doodgeskiet.

A landmark family restaurant in Parow ce-

lebrated 50 years of serving Italian food by

presenting their customers with the origi-

    nal 1965 menu.

I had carpaccio for 75c and my wife had

a shrimp cocktail for 65c for starters, then

we had lasagne for 50c each and for desert

wehad cassata and coffee at 35c ahead, one

    of the loyal patrons,MuisGreeff fromPano-

rama says about the epic celebration that

    lasted two days.

Muis says he and his wife Marie used to

often dine at Harlequin restaurant in Voor-

trekker Road when they were students.

Then I went to the army andmany years

later we returned here and everything was

still pretty much the same, he says.

The party was fun, says Americo Zuc-

cato, owner of the restaurant. Too much

fun. We drank wine, we sang, we danced ...

people stayed until after 01:00. We served

    close to 300 people.

Luckily Americo and founder of the res-

taurant, 85-year-old Angelo Inzadi, had the

presence of mind not to charge 1965 wine

prices, but then again, the restaurant was

not licenced back in the day.
