Tsinger takes another giant step whenshe attends a prestigious music camp
in the USA next week.On Friday Adelia Douw boards a flight
that will see her attending a five-week eventat the Berklee School of Music.Simply known as “Five-Week”, Berklee’s
Five-Week Summer Performance Pro-gramme, is now in its 27th year, and is thelargest, most comprehensive summermusicprogramme available anywhere. With its diversity of study options, world-
class faculty, visiting artists, and state-of-the-art facilities, it is the premiere contem-porary music summer programme foryoung musicians. Each summer, approximately 1 000 partic-
ipants from across America and around theworld (70 countries) share in this uniqueevent, experience the summer of a lifetime,at the world’s most prestigious institutionfor the study of contemporary music. This journey started for the young singer
when she joined the Delft Big Band Projectin 2009, and she has been impressing audi-ences at their performances ever since.“Joining the band was the best decision
that I made, even though I was a bit over-whelmed at first,” she admits.“I always knew that I wanted to sing, but
joining them showed me that it was goingto be a lot of hard work but our band leader,Ian Smith, was always inspiring us to workharder if we wanted to reach our dreams.“Working with them made a very big im-
pact on my career choice and onmaking mydreams a reality,” she said. Douw is nowstudying Drama and Performance Arts atNorthlink College. The adventure continued for her in 2010
when shewas encouraged to attend thevocalworkshops at the Cape Town InternationalJazz Festival and audition for Berklee.“It was very exciting to be accepted, but
at the time I felt I was not ready, now I’molder, and wiser,” she smiles shyly.“I feel that I willmake a better impact now
and this trip is almost like a stepping stoneto my dream of becoming the best perform-
ing artist that I want to be, not just in CapeTown, I’ve got the world in my sights.”The young singer is very excited about her
expectations at Five-Week.“I know that it is just for five weeks but
I think that the knowledge I will get will bewith me for a lifetime.“As a young person this opportunity
means the world to me and it’s also a chanceto meet young people from across the worldwho share in my passion for the music.”She also said that the achievement of the
Delft Big Band is proving the positive influ-ences that music can have in an area betterknown for its crime and gangsterism.“I think that we have grown into positive
role models in our community. More youtharound us are seeing what we are doing andare motivated to join us.
“If we could get more financial backingand support there is so much more that wecan do, but we will not give up on this jour-ney. We have grown into a family, and theband will always be a part of my world andwe just grow stronger after every perform-ance.“With our achievements we want to show
the world that there is a lot of light that cancome out of this darkness that people wantto see in Delft, and all other communitieswhere crime is causing so much destruc-tion.”Adelia Douw is all packed up and ready
to go as the Delft Big Band send her off witha farewell fanfare.

A new committee at the well-known Chest-nut Place in Belhar wants to make somechanges to empower residents in the area. They recently hosted a strategic planning
session and felt that somethingmust be doneto improve living conditions at these blocksof flats, especially for the youth.Berenice Barnard is the chairperson, and
she felt that the area was being destroyed byunemployment among youth that was thecause of the rising tide of drug and alcoholabuse that led to an increase in crime.“Ourmajor concern is for the youth in this
area,” she said.“There is nothing for them to do and you
see them hanging around here all day. Someof them even have their matric but there areno resources for them to study further.“As a committee we want to make it our
priority to ensure that they can have a posi-tive future, but we are looking for partnersto join us in our fight.”
Barnard pointed out that they would liketo be assisted by organisations and individu-als who can play a part in stemming the tideof hopelessness.“Weneed tomotivate ouryouth into chang-
ing their choices to improve their lives, butwecannotdo it onourownwithnoresources.“There is a reading roomhere, butwe need
more resources to start a recreation centrefor them to be busy with positive activitieslike skills or craft courses to help them.”For Mandela Day this year the group
planned to officially launch their project sothey are calling on donors or sponsors to jointhem in their quest to make a difference.“We need help to assist our youth in this
area. So if there are people out there who canassist us with our needs they must come tous, and help us with our mission.” said Bar-nard.V For more information about the project, BereniceBarnard can be contacted on 078 023 8398.

Needy students at CPUT got a bursaryboost from The South African NationalZakáh Fund (SANZAF Western Cape)last week.At a ceremony at the Bellville Campus
representatives of the facility received acheque for R599 220 that will be assisting64 deserving young people from finan-cially disadvantaged backgrounds.SANZAFplaces a high premiumon de-
velopment and empowerment; andtherefore believes that a relevant terti-ary education qualification is one sureway of escaping poverty in a countrywith such a high unemployment rate. This belief was also shared by Milcho
Damianov, director: Advancement De-partment at CPUT, who said that theywere continually challenged to look atthe holistic development of their stu-dents and financial support was key totheir efforts.“We can’t put students at the centre of
all we do if we don’t have an enabling en-vironment or the structures and facili-ties to achieve this,” he said.“While education is the vehicle for the
improvement of human life, we needpartners and many hands on the wheelin order to reach this goal.“This iswhy theon-goingandextreme-
ly generous support of our partners atyour organisation is so critical and verymuch appreciated.”He also pointed out that the facilities
records indicated that there was a con-siderable increase in students seeking fi-
nancial aid. Last year an amount ofR251 768 was directly handed over toCPUT students, an increase of just morethan a 100 %.“A core function of our organisation is
to provide financial support and to assistneedy and deserving students,” ex-plained Moulana Sarfaraaz Hamza, anadministrator for SANZAF in the West-ern Cape. “We recognise that educationplays an important role in determininglabour market prospects and as an or-ganisation, we havemade a concerted ef-fort to be responsive to the dire needswithin communities.”He added that up to R3 million has
been earmarked for 280 students and dis-bursed for education and empowermentprogrammes in the Western Cape, withbursary students spread across all lead-ing tertiary institutions countrywide.Last yearmore than 500 students bene-
fited from the bursary programme andit is envisaged that the number is set togrow. The success of SANZAF is attributed
mainly to the excellent support it re-ceives from contributors and the com-munity at large.Application forms for the 2014 academ-
ic year will most likely be available fromthe SANZAF website from November, the closingdate is 10 January 2014.Appli-cants are strongly urged to apply earlyandmake sure applications are complet-ed in full and accurately with relevantsupporting documentation.V More information available from Faeza Govindon 021 638 5108, or email [email protected]..

Many hands help outRepresentatives from the organisations who made the renovations a reality gather at the re-launch of the facility.
There’s some bright new beginnings for aneducare centre in Uitsig thanks to somevery caring people giving of their time andresources.
A heartwarming event marked the startof new beginnings for the Noel Stanton Edu-care centre on the corner of Myrtle and Eri-ca roads on Thursday 20 June when theirnewly renovated facility was launched tomuch joy.
The building accommodates 120 childrenranging from 18 months to five years of age,and there was notable concern for the limit-ed space and lack of supplies as well as theconditions under which the children wereeducated.
This recent upgrade means more childrencan be added to the facility along with im-proved education and a sound learning en-vironment.
It also means that the facility will now beeligible for a daily subsidy for each childthere.
The principal of the centre, Bella Joseph, wore her heart on her sleeve and could nothold back the tears of gratitude when shethanked all the organisations who helpedbring her vision to life.
The project was an initiative by the Cath-olic Welfare Development (CWD) and reno-vations were funded by the HomeChoice De-velopment Trust.
Securitas Security Services provided 24/7on-site security guards for the duration ofthe project to ensure the safety of the con-tractors and equipment on site, at absolute-ly no cost.
“Security is not just about the protectionof physical assets, it is about the safety ofpeople and building stronger and more co-
hesive communities,” said Mark Sangster, managing director of Securitas SA.
“The Uitsig community has always beenself-starting and we were delighted to havesecured the construction site during thebuilding operations.
“One of our core values is ‘helpfulness’and through our involvement, we have triedto demonstrate our commitment in this re-gard.”
“The plans to renovate and extend thebuildings here have taken time to come tolife but it has been worth the wait”, saidRick Garratt, Chairman of the HomeChoiceDevelopment Trust.
Gillian smith, HomeChoice DevelopmentTrust Project manager also thanked suppor-ters who helped make early childhood lear-ning a comfortable reality for the little onesof the facility.

when the Jamaican government roundedup, jailed and tortured hundreds of Rasta-

lence in Jamaica through the eyes of itsmost iconic community, and shows howpeople use their recollections of past trau-mas to imagine new possibilities for a col-lective future.”On Thursday 11 July the event will be

The legacy of a leading writer lives on ina reading project that was officiallylaunched on Saturday.Ravensmead Library hosted the official
launch of Lendz Reading Tutoring Pro-gramme which also offers help in Afri-kaans, English, maths and accounting.Heading this initiative is Lendy Swart-
booi, daughter of writer, the late LeonardKoza, who wants it to be a legacy to her fa-ther’s belief that reading was a key compo-nent out of poverty for children from disad-vantaged communities. At the launch she also pointed out the im-
portance that parents and caregivers mustplay in ensuring that their children em-brace the importance of reading.“My father played a huge role in motivat-
ing me to love reading,” she said.“With this project we don’t just involve
the children, wewant the parents to becomepart of their growth as well.
“We acknowledge thatwe come frompoorcommunities, but why would we want tokeep our children in poverty when we havea resource like a library in every communi-ty that is a passport out of that poverty?“Growing up in Elsies Rivermy father al-
ways told us that the family was not rich, but that he got his wealth of knowledgethrough the library, and that formed thelearning foundation for all of us.“He was always there to give us encour-
agement, even in failure because he felt thatit was just as important to learn from yourmistakes, not give up.”Swartbooi added that with regard to the
reading programme the children who werepart of it since the beginning of the year hadshown remarkable progress.“We have worked very closely with local
schools and the children who started withus at the beginning of the year have im-proved tremendously,” she said.V For more information Lendy Swartbooi can becontacted on 073 270 0211.

What does suffering from tubercu-losis (TB) and climbingKiliman-jaro have in common?
While scaling the highest free-stand-ingmountain in theworld at 5 895metresone might experience shortness ofbreath, nausea and hallucinations. These are just some of the symptoms
and side effects of TB and its treatment.A clinical psychologist at Brooklyn
Chest Hospital, Leigh Rynhoud (40), willattempt to conquer the mountain in Sep-tember and raise funds for the hospital, particularly for the treatment of deadlystrains of TB.The Bothasig resident says the funds
will beused for twoprojects, namelyvisi-tor transport and a work-skills project.“I know how important support from
the patient’s family is and some of themcannot afford to come for a visit. As forthe work-skills project, some of the rea-sons why people end up getting TB in-clude not eating healthily or not lookingafter themselves appropriately. To justrelease them from hospital and put themin the same situation after a year of fight-ing the illness doesn’t help. They mustlearn something new,” she explains. The hospital treats about 250 patients
who suffer from Extremely Drug Resist-ant TB (XDR-TB).In Rynhoud’s professional capacity,
she faces a proverbial Kilimanjaro everyday. She has to motivate patients who are
staring death in the face.“During therapy I would sometimes
tell the patient to look at Table Moun-tain. I would say: ‘You can’t wish your-self to the top. All you can do is try. Andevenwhile youwalk around the hospitalgrounds, if that is your training forclimbing it, it is still training for climb-ing that mountain’,” continues Ryn-houd.So, in order to raise funds and moti-
vate her patients, she has decided toclimb Kilimanjaro.“It could take a patient up to a year to
overcome TB, so my journey started onTB Day on 25 March and will end a yearlater,” she says.Rynhoud will be paying for the trip
herself, so all the money raised will gostraight to the hospital. The success of her journey depends on
people out there donating money for agood cause. According to her, peoplegladly donate money for cancer or HIV/Aids, but they are not so consideratewhen it comes to TB.One of these reasons, according to
Rynhoud, is that people tend to underes-timate the disease. Which leads to thequestion, how serious is TB really? She sums up the problem in her blog
(www.kileighmanjarovstb.blogs-pot.com): “According to the WHO, ap-proximately 8,7 million people becameillwithTB in 2011, 1,4millionpeople diedand 10 million children were left or-phaned after their parents succumbed tothis disease worldwide. It is estimatedthat in the 22 high burden countriesthere are 10 million people living withactive TB. Sub-Saharan Africa has thehighest proportion of new cases per pop-ulation in the world. In 2011 it was esti-mated that there were nearly 30 000 peo-ple in the Cape Town metro area suffer-ing from TB.”V To donate go to www.tbhivcare.org and clickon donate and then on the Kileighmanjaro.vs.TBlink.

For Richelle Graham, founder of the LuckyLucy Foundation, there is nothing morebeautiful in life than a severely abused andneglected animal miraculously recoveringto trust human beings again. In fact, for the past three years Richelle
along with her employees and volunteers atthe foundation have saved or dramaticallychanged the lives of thousands of destituteanimals in and around Cape Town.A commendable reason for this worthy
foundation to be a beneficiary at this year’sTygerBurger “Cause We Can” charity con-cert, which takes place at the Bellville CivicCentre on 28 July. This concert now in its 11th year, will fea-
ture the likes of Juanita du Plessis, AmandaStrydom, Karen Zoid, Albert Frost, KoosKombuis and many more.It all started in 2010 when Richelle found
a dog tied to a railway line. Trains had goneover her, her leg was severed and she waspregnant. She was rushed to the Market Street Ani-
mal Hospital in Paarl where vets did anemergency operation to try stabilise her.Her mangled right front leg was amputatedbut due to the shock and trauma endured, and the anaesthetic and painmedication ad-ministered, she lost all her puppies. They named her Lucy, and the newly
formed foundation was named in her hon-our. Since then Lucky Lucy has gonethrough extensive rehabilitation at theLuckyLucyAnimal Shelter, where she slow-ly adjusted to the amputation.Today she is a very important part of the
Lucky Lucy Foundation’s education drive. She takes trips to schools, so thatwhenher
story is told she can help teach about justice, respect and compassion for all life. The Lucky Lucy Foundation is a non-prof-
it, pro-life, pro-quality of life organisationthat tries to relieve the plight of severely ne-glected and abused township and street ani-mals, but also to socially uplift and educatedestitute and impoverished children andpeople in and around Cape Town.“Lucky Lucy is an ambassador for the
voiceless. We oppose any form of cruelty toany animal, be it kicking a dog to inhumanemethods of slaughter for human consump-tion,” says Richelle. After three years Richelle staysmotivated
to see each and every one of the animals theyrescue find happiness in what she calls a
“forever home”.She believes the battle against animal cru-
elty and overpopulation can be won.“My deepest wish is that all like-minded
organisations get together and collaboratebecause only through coalition do I havefaith that it can be done.”Funds and monetary support remain her
biggest challenges to date as the foundationstares downever-growing vet bills, food billsand staff salaries. Apart from this they areconstantly in need of “adoptive parents” fortheir animals.“Many people have not yet been reached
to be educated on the effects of backyardbreeding and the facts out there. People needto know that going to any shelter first beforefinding a furry companion might just meanchanging the life of that rescued animal for-ever and there is nobetter feeling than that,”she says.Every cent of the proceeds for each ticket
purchased from this organisation for the“Cause we can” concert will go towards theorganisation.Tickets cost R250 and can be purchased
from Kerry-Jean 083 271 8114; Caryn Allen083 261 4295 or Marcia van Eck 081 802 5114.

“I love entertaining people, it’s whatI do,” laugh-a-minute Emo Adamssays.
“It’s actually who I am,” he says, adding:“I’m very passionate about being onstage.”While Emo has been in theAfrikaans en-tertainment industry for about five years,he was always performing. There was noepiphany or decisive moment that pushedhim towards his career choice. He jokingly points out that he doesn’tthink he had a choice in thematter, he saysinstead; his dad forced him into entertain-ing with Malay choirs and “KaapseKlopse”.“One thing led to another andnowwearesitting here today,” he says.Emo is known for his hilarious stagepresence, which sometimes includes pull-ing some funny faces.“I don’t think pulling faces was inten-tional, it came over time,” Emo says, say-ing again that he just wants to entertainpeople. His dancing is another thing that keepsaudiences entertained. “I don’t think any-one taughtme to dance, it was a case of imi-tating people,” Emo says.“If Michael Jackson’s on the TV, thenyou wanted to be like Michael Jackson,”Emo says, adding: “All the good moversand the iconic guys like James Brown, were the guys I liked.”
’Cause we CanThen of course there was his involve-ment with the Malay choirs and “KaapseKlopse” which also helped.Emo is one of the artists who continuallysupport TygerBurger’s ’Cause we Can con-certs by performing for free at the show

SAREL BURGER
derblom, Migale Dawood, Nathier April (al-mal Jan Kriel-skool), Matthew Alexander,Keanen Parnell, JasonWessels, LoganMoos(almal Westcliff) en Henwille Cleophas (DeGrendel).Voorts is Herman Venter (De Grendel) be-
noem as as die LSOB-verteenwoordiger bydie Akademieweek, terwyl Riaan le Sueur(Westcliff) as een van die SA span se afrig-ters aangewys is.

SAREL BURGER
sche Kloof/Walmer, Goodwood t Kuilsri-vier, Hands & Heart t Villager.

The gruelling play-off rounds of the 10th an-nual Engen Knockout Challenge came to anend on Sunday, with 13 teams sealing quali-fication for the finals.Cape Town’s premier under-17 tourna-
ment started at the beginning of June, withover 100 teams fighting to join hosts Santos, defending champions Ajax Cape Town andNational First Division (NFD) side ChippaUnited in the tournament finals. However, with thousands of rands worth
of prizes and bragging rights at stake onlythe best teams have qualified for the finalsin August.Teams from across Cape Town have sur-
vived the cut and both the northern andsouthern suburbswill be strongly represent-ed.Parow based NFD team Vasco da Gama,
Kraaifontein City, Kuils River FC, IslandsRovers, Bishop Lavis FC and Atlantic Na-cional make up the northern contingent, while Claremont’s ASD Academy, CapeUnited, Grassy Park’s Crusaders, GreenPoint Selesians,Hanover ParkFC,Mitchells
Plain’s Kenpark United and Pinelands clubOld Mutual Academy represent the south.Should one of the qualifiers not be able to
participate, Two Oceans Academy, UnitedFC or Eastern Rovers will take their place.Oneof themost surprisingomissions from
the list of finalist is Mitchells Plain’s Wood-lands United, who finished in seventh placeat the finals last year.Woodlands finished in third place in
group four after a solitary victory, withBishop Lavis in first on nine points and OldMutual in second on six points.Lavis were one of only five teams to finish
the secondphasewithaperfect record, alongwith Crusaders, Hanover Park, ASD Acade-my, Atlantic Nacional.HanoverPark topped the scoring charts in
the play-off rounds with 11 goals in theirthree games, while Crusaders were a closesecond with 10.ASD hit the back of the net seven times,
but were the only team not to concede a sin-gle goal. The 10th annual Engen Knockout Chal-
lenge will take place from Friday 16 to Sun-day 18 August.

Cape Town’s club rugby leagues are setfor an overhaul next season when thecurrent format of the competition will
be scrapped. The Western Province Rugby Football Un-
ion (WPRFU) currently runs eight differentleagues of 10 teams each, with the top twogaining promotion to a higher league eachyear.
The bottom two teams are relegated. However, as of next year the top 45 clubs
in the region will be split into three different15-team groups – A, B and C – as part of thesame “Premier Competition”.
The clubs seeded from 46-78 on the rank-ings will be divided into three different re-gional competitions, in the “Northern”,“Southern” and “City” Leagues.
ReactionThe change in format has received con-
trasting reactions from some of the city’sbiggest clubs. Michael Reynolds, chairper-son of South Africa’s oldest club, Hamil-ton’s, says he is against the change.
“It takes us away from the strength versusstrength (competition). Maties already beatthe lower sides in the Super League A by 80points and now there are five sides that areweaker than the bottom sides in the league,”he says.
Reynolds adds that the new competition’sother weakness is that teams will only playeach other once in the league stage, beforethe top six sides advance to knockoutrounds.
“The structure now – strength versusstrength, home and away – is the only wayit can work. That’s a true reflection. Youplay home and away, no excuses.”
The knockout phase of the competitionwill be similar to Super Rugby, with the toptwo in each group advancing to semi-finals,while teams placed three to six will face off
in quarter-finals to determine the other twosemi-finalists.
Teams placed from seventh to 14 in thegroups will advance to a “Top Eight” knock-out competition, with quarter-finals, semisand a final.
Although the top two and bottom twoteams in each group will still be promotedand relegated, the promotion/relegation for-mat has also changed.
The third-placed team in each league, ex-pect Group A of the “Premier Competition”,will face off against the 13th-placed team inthe lower league, with the winner gainingpromotion.
Chairperson of Primrose RFC, FaghierGamieldien, says the inclusion of a knock-out element is one of the primary reasons hevoted for the tournament.
“If you are in fourth place in Super LeagueB and you know you cannot be promoted ordemoted then what are you playing for?” hesays.
“Every year you find Maties or the otherbig clubs winning the Super League A. Thenew structure gives the other clubs a chanceto win the league. It gives everyone an oppor-tunity to win.”
The regional leagues will take a similarformat, with the 11 teams in each leagueplaying the other sides in their league once.
WinnerThe top three from each league will then
advance to a combined league competition,to play a single round of matches to find anultimate winner.
Teams placed from four to 11 will play an-other round of games in their respectiveleagues.
Although the competition as a whole drewconflicting responses from the variousclubs, everyone agreed that a major down-side was the fact that the second, third or un-der-20 team competitions will not have aknockout competition.
