(See Page 12) In Blikkiesdorp the staff of HOPE Cape Town, an organisation providing various so- cial services to the area, dedicated their time to feeding the children of Delft. The organisation’s spokesperson Fahim Docrat said that even the recent theft of po- wer cables could not dampen their desire to make this day special for the children. “We started at around 08:00 and expected to feed around 200 children. We ended up fee- ding over 600 children and adults. “Fortunately with the support of Spar Cor- porate and Spar stores in Milnerton, Gar- dens, and the Neelsie in Stellenbosch, we had enough porridge, fruit and yogurt for everyone. “We also provided fun activities and enter- tainment for the children. It was truly a mo- ving experience to see how appreciative the- se little kids were and we were reminded that there is lots more work for us to do.” In Clarke Estate in Elsies River, Restoring Hope Community Development ended their three-day holiday programme with Mandela Day activities. The children became a special part of their holiday activities where they painted vari- ous walls in the area by adding their hand- prints to those walls. Soup and other treats were also handed out as the more than 200 children also enjoy- ed performances from MC Ashley and the Rastafarian band Uproot. The Open Door Community Foundation also hosted a very successful event in Con- naught Estate. The Cape Chamber of Commerce joined them with sponsorship of food, blankets, gifts, clothing, novelties and groceries as they decided to spend their 67minutes wit- hin the community. Chilly weather could not deter more than 500 youth and adults from enjoying the event and they were also entertained by Marcus the MC, Choose Life Crew, Youth Movment Produxion and Rebel records. Melanie Payne of Open Door pointed outthat the event also revealed to sponsors thegreat need in the community.

“Open Door would like to thank CapeChamber of Commerce for their whole hear-ted support and their commitment to futureendeavours with us,” she said.

Heroes workshop for changeAn event destined to have a lasting effect

on the community was CL Willmot Heroeshosting a workshop on Saturday 19 July -in the true spirit and honour of Nelson Man-dela.

While this organisation is associated withthe primary school in the area, the work-shop saw the start of a project that will havea wider impact.

“A large percentage of our schools – andour communities – are very much still expe-riencing and very much feeling the effectsof apartheid,” said Andrew Cardoza fromthe organisation.

“What the system of apartheid did so suc-cessfully was to divide our people. A favou-rite strategy of Napoleon to win his warswas that of divide and conquer,” he said.

The workshop was aimed at expandingcommunity support for our schools, makingcitizens aware that they are able to achievegreat things when they rally together for asingle cause.

The Uitsig Community Police Forum wasstrongly represented in the workshop.

“So many of our parents only considerand take care of their own. What is neededis a collaboration amongst parents andother community organisations to speed upthe normalisation process in our schools,”said Brandon Sobotker, a committed parentand CL Willmot Hero.

Cindy Celliers, from SolidRoots, was oneof the guest speakers invited to present how

values-based educa-tion can develop outchildren into res-ponsible adults witha greater conscious-ness of others, grea-ter respect for eachand every one, andevery culture, religi-on and ethnic group.

She hosted one ofthe session and iscurrently involvedin “The Values-ba-sed Footprint Pro-ject” at RavensmeadHigh School, CLWillmot PrimarySchool, Uitsig Pri-mary, St AugustinePrimary School, andHoly Trinity Prima-ry School.

Reyaan van derWesthuizen, an ex-SouthAfrican Muay-thai champion and current Assistant Coachfor the National Muaythai Team of SouthAfrica, inspired the audience with his per-sonal account of the twists and turns, andthe ups and downs of his personal life.

“The workshop left most of us inspired. It made us realise there is still a very longroad ahead and that we need other parentsand members of our community to throw intheir weight – because every little bithelps,” said parent Mildred Michaels.

“Our teachers, our schools need that extrahand, and it is sad to see the slow speed oftransformation. We often do not realise this- that if everyone put up their hand we canbring about dramatic change in our schoolsin a far shorter period of time.”

CL Willmot Heroes aims to bring variousmembers of the community together in a co-ordinated effort to support the educationalsystem. “Our group can do with more handson deck. It currently consists of a numberof retired senior citizens, parents of schoolgoing kids, and other committed citizens,”said Brandon Arendse another committedhero.

“None of us has time. Our CL Willmot He-roes have made time, we have put time asidebecause the education of our future genera-tion of learners is key to the success of ourfuture society,” said Cardoza.V For further information email clwill[email protected] or find them on facebook (searchfor CLWillmot Heroes).

is hoekom doenons hierdie pro-jek?“Die antwoord

is eenvoudig – me-demenslikheid.

Alackof electricity is nomatch for the dedi-cation of a community organisation inDelft.

Residents of Blikkiesdorp were dealt yetanother blow recently when cable thievesstole electric cables, cuttingoff supply to theHOPE Cape Town Community Centre - anon-profit organization providing outre-ach, education and counselling in the area.

According to HOPE Cape Town’s spokes-person Fahim Docrat, this setback will notdetract from the committment to provideservices, but they need people to point outthe thieves in the community.

“This is the third time that this cable hasbeen stolen in recent times,” he said.

“This is having a devastating impact onthe local community andaffects ourvariousprogrammes and initiatives.”

He further explainedwhat theyhave beendoing in the community.

“We have been involved with the Blik-kiesdorp community for many years now.As part of our continuing outreach pro-gramme we established a vegetable gardenthat feeds local residents.

“Our dietician, social worker and occu-pational therapist also have weekly sessi-ons with residents where they are counsel-led and advised on healthy living and areequipped with coping skills and supportedby our wider team.We also teach parentingskills and have implemented play therapysessions.”

“While the focus of our work is to addressthe HIV/Aids and TB pandemic, we do thiswithin the wider social context and as part

of our approach, we also address issues ofpoverty.

“To fully address the pandemic, oneneedsto create an environment that is conduciveand supportive of treatment that goes bey-ond the dispensing of medication. Blikkies-dorp is just one of 20 communities that wecurrently operate in and we hope that wecan have a positive impact through our ef-forts.

“When thieves steal from the needy, it isa very sad day.We ask that authorities takethe necessary steps to ensure that our com-munities are better protected andwe ask re-sidents to come forwardwith any informati-on so that these thieves can be brought tobook.”

inderhaas terug na die sentrum. In my agterkop weet ek dat

Die man was baie vriendelik

winter-reses. Die program (tuisspan eerste)is: Durbanville-Bellville t Helderberg, Uni-versiteit van Kaapstad t Bellville, Tygerbergt Universiteit van Wes-Kaapland, Belhar tdie Maties, Kuilsrivier t Victoriane, Vals-baai t Noordelikes/Northlink-kollege,Scottsdene t Young Peoples, Hands & Heartt Brackenfell, Macassar t Goodwood.

Belhar swoeg vir gelykopuitslag in WPrugbyliga

Promising start: UWC Football Club began their Varsity Cup Football campaign on a promising note when they played to a 22 stalemate with the University of Johannesburg at UWCSports Stadium on Monday evening. genoeg gedoen omdie trofee vir die aanskou-likste spel te wen.
