explained that the launch was thefruition of plans that started backin 2008.

“In 2008, the Open Society Foun-dation for South Africa through itsCriminal Justice Initiative and inpartnership with the Western CapeDepartment of Community Safetyembarked on a new strategy to sup-port efforts to promote communitysafety that are cognizant of both theneed for immediate law enforce-ment and for long-term crime pre-vention, and Elsies River was iden-tified as a pilot site for the projectthat will spread to all areas in the

‘Prosperityfor all is key’. From page 1.

“An initiative like this is important because whilepolice, and Metro Police have their role to play, theycannot be everywhere all the time.

“Sometimes there must be eyes and ears in the com-munity and an example of this is with women andchild abuse when it occurs behind closed doors, andonly reported afterwards.

“This highlights the need for partnerships to keepthe community safe and there’s nothing better thancommunities starting to take charge of their safety is-sues with initiatives like this.”

She also pointed out that despite statistics aboutsome crimes coming down which is good and impor-tant for planning and budgets there is still the needfor everyone to feel safe wherever they are.

“This kind of initiative will instil the motivation toall in the community to want to play their part in mak-ing their neighbourhoods safer, and as government wewill support you.

“Withan initiative like this the supportwill be avail-able after consultations with the structures within thecommunity, so that the most effective steps can be tak-en to solve safety issues in the community.

“I must commend you for taking this step becauseit is going to improve the safety in your communityand I hope that it will inspire other communities todo the same.”

Maggot concluded by saying that the Elsies RiverSafety Plan wants to achieve a community where fami-lies and young people are supported, programmes andservices are available, the youth have sufficient oppor-tunities for recreation and skills development, whilealcohol and substance abuse is addressed through pos-itive awareness programmes and access to treatmentand support.

“We also aim to see that safe schools are integratedinto and supported by the community, and an effectiveand trusted criminal justice system is in place ... allmust feel safe and there is prosperity for all.”

“We also prepared food for the pa-tients at the Day Hospital. Approximate-ly 15 000 meals were served to the com-munity during the course of the day.”

She added that this was only one partof their activities for the day.

“The second part of the initiative wasthe preparation and performance of aplay, by the first years, based on a topic

which was identified by each principalas an issue affecting their specificschool.

“It was a very successful event and wewere happy to work closely with KobusPauw, the community partner at Delftand Avril Whate, senior programmemanager of MGD (Maties GemeenskapDiens) Tygerberg, to ensure that every-thing went smoothly,” she said.

ATMs next big targetANDRÉ BAKKES

The third ATM bombing incident in thenorthern suburbs in just one week, andthe second in Goodwood in five days, oc-curred on Tuesday during the earlymorning hours at the Goodwood Mall.

Just like the incident on Friday, two ATMswere bombed in the latest incident.

This time, three men armed with rifles arebelieved to be involved and they fled thescene with two containers and an undis-closed sum of cash.

Provincial police spokesperson, WarrantOfficer November Filander elaborates: “Atapproximately 03:30 Goodwood Police werealerted of an explosion at an ATM at Good-wood Mall. On the scene they found that twoATMs were damaged by what we believewere three armed men. The suspects thenfled in an unknown direction. A case of dam-age to property was registered and nobodywas arrested or injured.”

He says that the investigation is still in itsearly stage and they cannot yet establishwhat kind of explosives were used.

Filander continues: “The latest trend thatATMs are blasted by explosives are a matterof concern for the Western Cape police, andevery endeavour will be made to apprehendthe suspects.”

The second bombing occurred last Fridaymorning on the corner of Vasco Boulevardand Milton Road.

According to Goodwood police spokesper-son, Warrant Officer Wayne Theunis, thefirst bomb exploded at about 03:10 and thena few minutes later another bomb reverber-ated through the suburb.

Two adjacent Absa ATMs were targeted, but despite these being severely damaged,Theunis couldn’t confirm if the perpetratorsescaped with any money.

TygerBurger talked to the only witness,vice-chairperson of the local community po-licing forum, Wayne van Doesburgh, wholives about 100 metres from the ATMs.

“At 03:07 I got an SMS from my bank abouttransfers and then a few minutes later Iheard a massive explosion. First I thoughtit was the place next door, but then I saw awhite vehicle and three tall men across theroad,” he says.

Against all reason Van Doesburgh walkedtowards the commotion at the ATMs, butthen another bomb went off.

“I was about 20 meters away, but it wasamazing, because they were standing rightnext to the ATM.” According to him the carwith four suspects sped away almost imme-diately after the second bomb went off. He

memorised the car registration number andeven drove down Milton Road for a while, but he couldn’t spot the vehicle. The policealso arrived on the scene “within minutes”.

Van Doesburgh says he would be morecautious in foreign surroundings, but be-cause he virtually grew up in the neighbour-hood, it feels like it’s his own back yard.

“I’m struggling to accept that this criminalelement is coming into our neighbourhood. That’s also why I’m part of the CPF – to dowhat we can and let these people know thatthey’re not welcome,” he concludes.

Anybody with information regardingATM bombings can contact the SAPS’sCrime Stop number on 086 001 0111.

. An Absa ATM was also bombed in Bel-lville last week.

Red faces and skinof different colour

GARY VAN DYK

Mistaken racial identity can cause redfaces, when the rest of the world thinksyou’re a whitey!

You can’t judge a book by its cover, andin thenewSouthAfrica certain segmentsof our nation must remember that, awhiter shade of pale, may not be as itseems.

I have to confess that during my life-time there have been some embarrassingmoments, especially growing up duringapartheid, because I am a little “fair ofcomplexion” as my late grandmotherused to say.

The problem is that even now the ugli-er side of the legacy of apartheid raisesits ugly head when the mistake pulls meinto some conspiratorial conversation, about the stereotypes of race.

I was recently at a gathering where Iended up as the only “person of colour”in the group.

The topic of crime and gangsterismcame under discussion and the state-ment was made that despite the “new”South Africa we (coloureds) still chooseto become gangsters, even alluding to themusic that was played on some radio sta-tions that we supposedly listen to.

How every video that you saw showeda black man as a gangster, our women asprostitutes.

What really hit home about people’sperceptions and enforcing of stereotypeswas the apartheid strategy of saying thatwe were “childlike” and could never han-dle freedom if it was given to us.

Luckily the years have taken their tollon my former temper where such dis-criminationwas concerned, so a calman-nouncement was made: “I am so-calledcoloured” and it did not help having aname-tag with a egte Hollandse surnamelike Van Dyk.

Once the red faces had turned to nor-mal I took up the conversation again andexplained that maybe they should lookbeyond the stereotypes that our “pop”culture was selling to the world.

I gave them a bit of my history of grow-ing up during apartheid where there wasan underground culture of music not in-fluenced by “Springbok Radio”, and itwas a culture of music that definitelyplayed its part in the struggle againstapartheid.

Unfortunately in the new South Africathat culture has been forgotten and ne-glected.

I explained that while racial discrimi-nation had been taken off the statutebooks, “whites” had discovered newways to separate the nation in the broad-cast media.

In the old days music was music andwe never put it into “boxes” as they donow, and the new way to support this dis-crimination was the alleged statistics ofAudience Ratings.

If you ever complain about the crapthat passes as music nowadays thensome bright-eyed PR person (normally ofthe formerly advantaged persuasion)jumps out of the woodwork to shout:“But, its what the PEOPLE want!”

Then she whips out boxes of pie-charts,and reams of analytical statistics toprove that all is right with the world.

I am sorry but I have yet to meet themother who is delighted that her son isfollowing the role models that are forcedon him and has been accepted into a gangafter his first killing, the daughter whois lured into addiction and forced intoprostitution, the learners at a school inthe township that is used as a gang battlefield. Where are the people that said thisis what they want?

I hope that after the very interestingdiscussion, my fellow countrypersonshave an awareness that even duringapartheid, skin-colour was not always areliable yardstick.

The stereotyping that is still given outto the world is not of our doing, but aslong as the world is ruled by the pie-chart, the suffering in our communitieswill continue.

Next week: The K-word and jazz, an-other stereotyping gone to hell!

Bishop Lavis has the beat!

The minstrel troupe of the Bishop LavisCommunity Youth Development have shownthat they have the style at recent competi-tions.

They recently took part in the competitionof the Kaapse Klopse Karnavaal Associationat Vygieskraal in Athlone and they are cele-brating some notable achievements.

Local councillor, Nas Abrahams, who alongwith is wife, Asa, organises the activities ofthe group, said that parents and childrenwere delighted with their achievement, espe-cially the huge number of new members to theteam.

“The team did very well although there isroom for improvement, but then again wehave only been taking part for the past threeyears and competing against much more ex-perienced teams.

“Amongst our first prizes was the Exhibi-tion and Best Band items as well as a stunningfirst prize for the Afrikaans Combine Song, which was the cherry on top.

“Other prizes included the Adult Male Soloand Comic Song which was performed byPhillip Dodgen, our star performer.”

Abrahams pointed out that the most spec-tacular item, the Exhibition and Best Banditem was a show stopper.

“The crowd went mad,” he says.“The theme of the exhibition was ‘Keep the

Peace in Hangberg’ and the hours of rehears-als with the children and adults alike paid itsdividends.

“Our choreographer Farieda Salie who isalso a member of the team did exceptionallywell to get the team to peak at the right time.

“I suppose it also helps that I dreamt up thetheme and floor pattern, and it helps that Ilike to do some part-time DJ work and eventsplanning, giving us the edge to produce a

crowd pleaser.”He said it also helped that Farieda Salie is

a qualified dance and ballet instructor whocompleted her studies at UCT.

“Our success lies in team effort and devel-oping our own children. We had our ups anddowns, but it encouraged us to do better,” headded.

“Our planning is in order for this comingseason and we look forward to another suc-cessful year. We will be establishing our owndrum major troupe and jazz band during thisyear.

“Lastly I want to thank all our parents, friends and family who share our vision forthe future.”

Nas Abrahams celebrated the achievements of the troupe with some of the younger minstrels.

Stuk vanShirley isegKaapsDie Baxter-ateljee is so intiem dat ditvoel asof ’n mens by Shirley Valentyn inhaar kombuis kuier.

Giving back part of their plan for schoolGARY VAN DYK

A group of former BonteheuwelHigh learners have some bigplans for their alma mater.

At the end of January some learn-ers from the 1980s got together atWynberg Park for a reunion cele-bration, and to make plans toplough some resources back intothe school.

While there was not such a goodresponse to the group’s appeal onFacebook, they are still determinedto continue their plans to form abigger association of former learn-ers who are prepared to work withthem.

“This is just a start and will moti-vate us to have more such events inthe future,” said Ursula MosesMunnik, one of the founder mem-bers of the group on Facebook.

“We have started this initiative, because we feel that the school gaveus a good foundation in educationto make a success of our lives, eventhoughmanyofus came fromdisad-vantaged circumstances.

“Our aim is to make contact withall former learners, schoolfriends, teachers and ex-teachers from theschool to work towards assistingthe school and its present learnerswhere needed.”

She added that along with fellowformer learner, Sharon Manus Fou-

rie, they intend to arrange more so-cial and other functions with the in-tention of helping the school andcommunity.

“We intend starting withBontheuwel High School and there-fore call upon all ex-learners to con-tact us and come on board this non-profit group.

“It is important that we go backto our educational roots and dosomething to motivate presentlearners to achieve their positivepotential, no matter their circum-stances.”

Former learners who like to bepart of this initiative can call Ursu-la on 082 573 8557, or email [email protected].
