Die mans was glo gekleein gewonekleredrag,”hetMarlenevertel.

Frans.
Dis eerder by winkelsentrums, kitsban-ke of sake-ondernemings.
FOTO: RICHARD ROBERTS
Youngsters were getting into the swim ofthings when the city hosted a communityyouth swimming gala in Elsies River re-cently.More than 200 young swimmers agedbetween 10 and 16 who currently partici-pate in swimming programmes at the Pa-row Valley, Parow North, Elsies and Ruy-terwacht Swimming Pools, showed offtheir abilities. They have been training for the past fewweeks with lifeguards and the swimmingpool facility officers. The gala, held at the Elsies River Swim-ming Pool, formed part of the city’s Sport,Recreation and Amenities Department’sLearn to Swim programmes that are hos-ted throughout the summer season eachyear.“A very large percentage of children inCape Town cannot swim and do not haveaccess to water education programmes,”said city mayoral committee member forcommunity services and special projects,Belinda Walker.“The City regularly hosts these Learn toSwim programmes to try and preventdrowning incidents. With approximately460 drowning incidents reported annuallyin South Africa, Learn to Swim program-mes are a priority for the Sport, Recreati-on and Amenties Department.”Many people are prevented from lear-ning to swim due to a lack of access toswimming pools.“The City is committed to providing in-
creased access to swimmingpools andbea-ches as well as the programmes necessaryfor residents to develop water safety andswimming skills.“This is part of the City’s vision of a sa-
fer, healthier and more inclusive city.Events such as this encourage Capetoni-ans, and the youth especially, to be moreactive while also promoting healthy li-ving,” concluded Walker.

The unprotected strike by bus drivers fromthe Transpeninsula Investments (TPI) vehi-cle operating company was resolved lastweekThursday after it severely interruptedthe MyCiTi bus service. The strike started at 05:00 on Wednesdaymorning and even though theT01 route (Du-noon,TableView,CivicCentre,Waterfront)was affected, the fact that only seven of the38 buses on the route are operated by TPIlessened the impact. The strikers barricaded the gates at thedepot in Prestwich Street in Green Point onWednesday, preventing the MyCiTi busesfrom departing. On Thursday morning 10 TPI drivers didarrive for work, and they, along with stand-
in drivers from other vehicle operatingcompanies, assured that MyCiTi could ope-rate effectively along T01.A small group of striking drivers employ-ed by TPI gathered on Thursday morningat the bus depot in Prestwich Street, but noincidents were reported by city’s law enfor-cement officials who attended the scene. An agreement to end the two-day unpro-tected strike was signed late on Thursdaybetween TPI and the striking drivers afterthe Commission for Conciliation, Mediati-on andArbitration assisted with the negoti-ations.At least 80% of the drivers resumed theirduties by the end of the day and on Fridayall drivers reported for duty.

Mfuleni sergeants add disciplineRICHARD ROBERTS
@richardjohn_rj
A total of 12 police officers at the Mfule-ni police stationwere recently promo-ted to the rank of sergeant.
The rank, according to senior manage-ment goes hand and handwith responsibili-ty and discipline.Brigadier Vincent Beaton, Kuils River
Cluster Commander, congratulated the 12men and women at the graduation ceremo-ny held at the Mfuleni Police Station onWednesday afternoon.“I am very proud of them but also excited
for them and their families. They have wai-ted quite a time, some of them between 10and 12 years,” Beaton said.He said as station management and clus-
ter commander he requires more leader-ship.“There is a big void in terms of leadership
in the lower levels, so we are very excitedand know they will make a big contributionand further the interest of the SouthAfricanPolice Service; to enhance discipline and toenhance service delivery to the broadercommunity,” Beaton said.He said normally it does not take very
long before someone gets promoted. “Theyare actually busy drafting up a new policyfor promotions, but normally it takes sevenyears,” Beaton said.As a sergeant, he explained, one is expec-
ted to be a supervisor over those in lowerranks.“It’s the first rank after the constable, peo-
ple look up to you. It is expected that youdo the parades at the station, you must in-spect the other members to see if they aredressed and armed properly; that they fulfil
their duties in a professional manner. Youwill be regarded as a senior although you’reat a low level.“You will have to enforce the discipline
and rules of the police,” Beaton continued.Colonel Luyanda Damoyi, station com-
mander at the Mfuleni Police Station, saidone of the main aspects of being promotedfrom constable to sergeant is that it comeswith responsibility.“We want to wish them good luck. It’s not
just about a promotion, it’s about responsi-bility. They have more responsibility now,and must serve our community with com-mitment and excellence. They must alsoguide the young ones, on and off duty, theymust have that responsibility,” Damoyisaid.
He said in a police area like Mfuleni theyrequire people with a high level of discipli-ne.“It will help me a lot to have a sergeant
who is in charge of a group of people whowill make sure that every instruction iscomplied with in terms of dealing with cri-me in the hot spots, that is very crucial forus.“The area is big and there are a lot of cri-
me hot spots, Wesbank andMfuleni, and weare talking about serious crimes: gangste-rism and robberies.“We need a high level of disciplined offi-
cers therefore we are very happy that thispromotion will assist us. They will now beour eyes when we are not there,” Damoyisaid.

These schools included The Settlers,Groote Schuur, South Peninsula, Wyn-berg, Heathfield, Chris Hani and BelharHigh Schools, as well as participation bylearners from the Cape Music Institute,Crystal House Academy and the IntyholoSchools Project.
A sea of peopleAs part of the programme, the schools

They are treated like any other artist,Craig said.

Dynamix band member Jodi Frede-ricks (18) told TygerBurger how excitingthe experience was.

Tracey said this was the biggest stagethe band had ever performed on.
“They have worked extremelyhard...They have achieved a lot and im-proved significantly in a short space oftime,” she said.
“These young musicians have broughtgood credit to the school, I am very proudof them, proud to be their teacher, andI am looking forward to a year filled withmany more musical experiences andgrowth,” enthused Tracey.

verdere opleiding in Mandaryns sal ont-vang.
trek, is kapt.
So, dis nogal’nmoeilike ding.
Omdie kursus te slaagmoes hulle 70 %be-
haal.
Ekmoet ditmet
albei hande aangryp. Ek het hard gewerk enom China toe te kan gaan, het my meer ge-motiveer.“My vriende en familie is baie opgewonde
en my kollegas ook,” het Mdatyulwa gesê.

With most golfers trying to take TigerWoods’ number one spot from hima young golfer is following in the
footsteps of Trevor Immelman on the juniorgolf scene.
TristanGalant, 12, fromBelhar isno stran-ger to winning ways at his age and has justemulated the senior SA golfer by becomingone of only a few junior golfers to tame theFish River course thrice in the junior ranks.
His latest achievement came during lastmonthwhenhe successfully defendedhis tit-le at the Fish River Challenge and he is inline to defend his national title in Johannes-burg later this year.
Dad, Martin, is his coach and also headsup coaching for WP development explainedthat at the prizegiving they were told thatImmelmanwas the last junior golfer to comeout tops at the course three times in a row.
“As an 11-year-old Tristan first played thechallenge for under-13’s in 2013 and wonthat,” he said.
“Later that year hewas there again for theSA Championships and now he has done itagain. It was tough for him this year, sha-ring the lead on the first daybut then comingin under pressure to eventuallywin by threestrokes.”
With preparations and practice goingstrong for defending his SA title later thisyear the other exciting news is that the yo-ung golfer has been invited to take part ina tournament in Scotland next month.
“This is very exciting news for us for him
to take part in a World Series Golf tourna-ment for juniors but we are still looking forsome financial help or sponsorship to gethim there,” continued Martin.
“I’ve never pushed or forced Tristan intothe game, but I see how much he has grown
to love it and enjoy playing so I want to givehim as much encouragement and motivati-on for him to succeed. Part of that is playingas many tournaments here in South Africabut the real test is getting him out to all themajor junior events across the world.
“This has been a testing ground for all themajor professionals and as a junior he willget the chance to understand what its liketo take to the world stage with his abilities.”
This weekwas still a busyweek for the yo-ung golfer who is in Grade 7 at Erica Prima-ry in Belhar, and he was playing in the Un-der-13 Championships at Bellville.
“The competition was tough at Fish Riverthis year,” he says.
“For me the best part is the support of myfamily, their encouragement at all times andmost importantly I love the game.”
Martin also wants to grow the sport in hiscommunity but needs help to keep youngs-ters in the sport.
“I am trying my best at the moment,” hesays. Unfortunately golf is not a cheap sportand I need help to keep youngsters here oncethey get playing. There are already a fewthat I amhelpingbut feel thatwithmore sup-port I could get more youth interested.
“Its not just about the sport but about get-ting them to realise their capabilities andpo-tential in life. For golf on the whole it couldalso mean a lot because overseas they haveso many good professionals rising throughthe rank of good foundation programmes.
“We must get that going in South Africaas well.”V For more information about sponsorship call Martin on 073 145 0661.

An era when sport played a big part inthe community was rememberedwhen Maitland Giants Baseball Club
hosted a reunion last week.Former star players spoke about the game
with fond memories of the enjoyment thatit brought to them as players, and most im-portantly, the positive impact it had on themas juniors taking the lessons of discipline in-to their adult lives.Whilemany of those playersmay have left
the Maitland area and spread across thePeninsula, it was obvious that the “Giants”retained a special place in their hearts. This event was the brainchild of Miles Oc-
tober, a former player who rose through theranks from junior level, and wants to giveback to his community through a new orga-nisation Play Sport4Life (PS4L).“PS4L is a new sport for development ven-
ture based in the Kensington/Factreton/Maitland areas that wants to revive sport inthe area,” he says.“We organised this event because wewan-
ted to highlight how important sport was inthe community andwewanted to honour so-me of the club’s former greats who were in-ducted into the club’s Hall of Fame.“It’s important thatwe showour apprecia-
tion for the role that these guys played in so
many lives.”While the evening was well attended and
saw former players from many areas get to-gether for the first time, there was also a bigsurprise for them.“Kenny Roman, the club star pitcher from
the 1970s, was flown in from Australia to at-tend the event and surprised birthday boyon the night Danny Page, when he walkedin with a huge Maitland Giants birthday ca-ke,” continues Miles.“This was very special for so many of the
members because Kenny was one of thestars of our teams and he shared some of thehighlights ofhis playingdayswith thegathe-ring.”Miles was very serious about the goals of
Play Sport4Life in his home suburb.“We want to revive sport in the communi-
ty as a means to deal with the social issuesplaguing it – rampant drug abuse, gang vio-lence and crime. PS4L intends to provide asafe environmentwhere children and adultscan play sport and have fun and at the sametime learn essential skills such being disci-plined, team work and respect for others.“Other sports clubswhich have benefitted
from PS4L sponsorship this year includesNorway Parks Football Club, Athlone AsBaseball Club and Kenfac Phillies SoftballClub.”V For more information on Play Sport4Life visitwww.playsport4life.org.
