On 20 June, pupils from Dennemere Prima-ry visited the Scooter’s Pizza store in BlueDowns. They were introduced to the art of pizza

making as well as the history behind theItalian delicacy and constructing their veryown pizza. This was part of a marketing strategy

which over 110 Scooter’s Pizza franchiseshave taken up nationally.“It is important that children see what re-

al work is and through this initiative, it hasworked very well,” said owner of BlueDowns Scooter’s Pizza Charlie Olivier. This has also been to the benefit of some

teachers who teach older pupils who are in-terested in the marketing side of the busi-ness.“Many of them want to work and some-

times struggle with learning but with prac-tise they can see exactlywhat’s happening,”

he said. They benefit through subjects such as

business studies.“What we found is that many pupils ap-

proach our help for entrepreneur’s day atschools. Asking us to sell our pizzas at acheaper price,” Charlie said.Through this initiative it has brought

them (Scooter’s) a lot of business andmoneybut at the same time allowed them to giveback to the community. Helpingwith neces-sary funds for various schools.“This is exactly what the hospitality in-

dustry needs to do.“At the same time, the staff fromScooter’s

Pizza enjoy being involved,” he said.Cheryl Snell (Grade R teacher at Denne-

mere Primary) said: “Iwas very excited andthe children looked forward to this. Theylearned many things which involve life ori-entation, personal hygiene and how to becautious whenworking with fire and safetyrules in the kitchen.”

The three-week long mid-year schoolholiday has finally arrived.

For children it’s a welcome break, but for many parents who have to work itcan be a stressful period of constantly won-dering if their child is safe.

There are, however, some basic and prac-tical safety precautions parents can intro-duce to their children, regardless of wheth-er they are left with a caregiver, domesticstaff or stay at home by themselves.

“It is important that they know to alwayskeep entry and exit doors locked, and thatno-one is to enter the home without yourpermission,” said Rob Dale, managing di-rector of ADT Security, Western Cape.

He urged that it is a good idea to make useof a list of emergency contacts.

10111This includes the 10111 number near the

telephone in order to explain to them whenand how it should be used.

“If you have a home security system in-stalled teach them how to activate and de-activate it and how and when to use othersecurity devices like panic buttons,” Robadvised.

The cold weather means that children areoften confined indoors, allowing boredomto quickly set in.

There are usually solutions for this, suchas wanting to visit a friend who lives in theneighbourhood.

If you are not able to drop your child off

or arrange a lift for them, Rob suggests thatparents walk the route with their childrenbefore they have to do it on their own.

“Explain that it is better to take a longerroute down familiar streets where there ismore activity than taking short-cuts acrossfields or through deserted areas or roadsthey’re not used to,” he said.

Mall security“On the day, they must call you to let you

know that they are about to leave home andagain once when they have arrived at theirfriend’s home.

“If while walking they find themselves inan unfamiliar street, they should look outfor a police or security officer and nevertalk to or take advice or a ride from astranger.”

Shopping malls are also, as a result of theholidays, busier and is a popular hang-outfor older children.

If children are going to a movie or to meetfriends, they should be encouraged to lookafter their belongings and to look out foreach other.

“Busy malls present a prime opportunityfor pick-pockets. They need to hold tightlyonto their handbags, wallets and cell-phones,” Rob said.

It is also important that if they becomeseparated from their friends they headstraight to the mall information desk or tosecurity personnel and try to track themdown from there.

We just read the article(“Action was a wonderfulman”, TygerBurger, 22 May)about the tragic accident inwhich Mr Tsepiso Dlaminipassed away a few weeks ago.

It was mentioned that up tonow, it hasn’t been establishedwhether the bus driver or MrDlamini ignored a red robot.

Bus drivers justcouldn’t care less

Today (19 June), as wetravelled from TygervalleyCentre on Durban Road, wewitnessed the following: AGolden Arrow Bus, with thenumber 1485 on the driver’sdoor and travelling on DurbanRoad towards Durbanville, ignored the red robot at thesame crossing (Fairmont HighSchool) at 16:14. The busentered the crossing when therobot was on red. So it was nota situation where the buscrossed the line on orange.

We were five people in thevehicle and four of us saw thishappening. We were behind thebus and had to stop at the redrobot but were able to keep aneye on the bus until we wereable to make a note of thenumbers above at one of thenext robots.

I wonder whether the acci-dent at the school had anyeffect on training. I am notsaying that the bus driver wasresponsible for Mr Dlamini’sdeath, but, surely, it must havehad an influence on the commu-nication between Golden Arrowand their drivers. It looks to meas if some of the drivers eitherdid not get the message or justcouldn’t care less.

The cold and inclement winter weatherover the next few months will force peopleto constantly seek ways of keeping warmusing warming devices like heaters andbrazier fires. If not monitored properly, these devices

can and often do, result in residential fires.According to the city’s Fire and Rescue

knows Rico. He is a respected manand the wealth of knowledge he hasis being passed on to me. He hasbeen inmy situation plenty of timesand he knows what to expect, so inthat respect he keeps me calm.“In terms of my preparation for

this fight, I thinkweachieved every-thing we wanted to. Danie comesfrom a boxing background so I ex-pect that he would try and keep thefight standing. Having said that, Iam ready for anything he throws atme,” he said.“I see a lot of myself in Gideon

when I was his age. He is very deter-mined to win every fight, so far hisrecord states that. This will be histoughest fight to date, but I amconfi-dent he can win. I will be in his cor-ner to help him. This is a very excit-ing time,” said Rico.Gideon also gives classes to pri-

mary schoolchildren at theWelgele-

gen NG church hall on Tuesdays.According to Rico this helps Gideonin growing as a fighter.

Training“You need a lot of patience and

these children help you with that.Sometimes you need to show themcertain techniques over and overand youmust have patience and notbecome irritated.Gideon is brilliantwith them and that is what he needsin fights like this.“The fight is not always going to

suit your pace or style and that iswhen you need patience and takethe gapwhen it presents itself,” saidRico. As with all other MMA fighters,

the Ultimate Fighting Champion-ship (UFC) is where the best of thebest compete. When the dust settlesFriday night, Gideon may just beone step closer to the big stage.

Evans “Mamba” Mbamba hashad a 10-month lay-off from com-peting but ring-rust won’t be afactor when he headlines the“Chesanyama Bill” againstMario “Maca” Briones for the va-cant WBF junior-featherweighttitle atGracelandCasino, inMpu-malanga on Saturday, June 29.Mbamba’s celebrated trainer

Nick Durandt, who has produced21 world and 94 SA champions, said his charge has not only beenpreparing for this fight but hasbeen active as a sparring partnerfor several months now.“Evanswon’t be affected by the

lay-off becausehe’s beenactive asa sparring partner in my gymlong before this fight was on,”said Durandt. “And what’s more,he has the IBF (flyweight) worldchamp Moruti (Mthalane) as hischief sparring partner now.Moruti is similar to a Mexicanfighter like Briones so Evanswillbe well prepared.“This time Evans has just got

so much going for him. He haslost two world title shots outsidethe country but this time he’ll beon home soil.“He’ll have the crowd rooting

for him, andhe’ll be in front of hisfans.

“He’s been unlucky in his pre-vious title attempts when ratherhostile conditions prevailed. Butthis time we don’t want to getlucky, we want the title on mer-it.”“Evans has been warned that

once the fight starts Briones willput his head down in the best tra-dition of Mexican boxers. Bri-ones will be no push-over.“This fight has come at the

right time for Evans, who I be-lieve has faced a better calibre offighter than Briones.“One has to remember that

Evans was once the WBC no 1contender, and that’s the mostprestigious (of the organisa-tions).”The second world title bout on

the “ChesanyamaBill”will be be-tweenGabisile “Simply the Best”Tshabalala andAustralia’s Shan-non “Shotgun” O’Connell for thevacant WBF women’s feather-weight title.According to her trainer and

manager Elias Mpembe, the un-defeated Tshabalala (won 8, ko 0,lost 0, drawn 1) is ready for whatcould be the crowningmoment ofher fistic career.“Gabisile would be ready if the

fight was tomorrow,” saidMpembe. “She’s got all the toolsfor the job ... she’s got it all.”

Mamba will strike,says coach Durandt

SAREL BURGER
