aving a disability has never kept a

    young woman from Kleinvlei from

    reaching for the stars.

Instead, Terniel Oppel (26) has been in-

spired to carve out a career for herself as a

    model.

Terniel grew up in Kleinvlei near Eerste

River, and believes not being able to hear

has given her other strengths to draw from.

For one, her beautiful smile has stood her

in good stead as this smile shone through

when she won Miss Western Cape 2014.

Terniel was selected out of a group of five

as the overall winner. All the other contest-

ants are able to hear and having been trium-

phant is a huge feather in her cap, says Tern-

iel. They called my name. I could not hear.

    I looked around.

They said it is you. I could not believe it.

I began to cry. I was very happy. I cannot

believe it because this was against hearing

    people.

    Inspired by her teacher

The competition was held in Brackenfell

    on Saturday, 6 September.

Terniel, an aspiring teacher, said she

hopes to entermore such competitions. Ev-

er since I was little, I loved it, Terniel said

using sign language. She lovesmodelling, es-

pecially the glamourous photos and beauti-

ful clothes. When asked what inspired her

as a young child to choosemodelling, she im-

mediately points to her teacher, Maria Siw-

    ertsen who assistedTygerBurgerwith inter-

    preting the interview on Friday.

Maria encouraged me to participate in

the Miss Deaf Western Cape competition,

where I had my first success, says Terniel.

Maria says: Terniel has the natural abili-

ty to model. We are very proud of her.

Terniel also won Miss Deaf South Africa

and came fourth in theMiss DeafWorld Pag-

    eant in 2007whichwasheld inPrague.Maria

replied that she always believed in Terniel.

She also helped her design and sew the dress

she wore on the big night of the pageant.

    Normal dress

The other girls all had fancy dresses. I

    had a normal dress.

I did not think I would win because my

clothes were not as pretty as theirs. Now I

understand that it is not important what the

dress looks like, but the person inside, that

    is important, Terniel added.

She said the first part of the competition

    was somewhat difficult. The interpreter

had to lip read. But I hada friend thathelped.

    It was fine, she said.

Among the prizes she won was a getaway

at a hotel, cosmetics, hair products and a

    Miss Western Cape 2014 certificate.Terniel

was born in Springbok in theNorthernCape

but grew up in Kleinvlei. She lost her ability

to hear at the age of 18 months due to con-

tracting meningitis. She joined the Domini-

can School for the Deaf near Wynberg at the

    age of 4 years.

So far, Terniel has completed her studies

in beauty therapy and Computer Studies at

    theNational Institute for theDeaf inWorces-

ter. In June she returned to the Dominican

School in Wittebome where she is currently

    assisting with computer classes.

In this way I can plough back into the

community, something I enjoy, she says.

Although she plans to become a teacher,

she also hopes to continue furthering her

modelling career and in so doing, raise

awareness about being deaf. Juanita Smith,

organiser of the Miss Western Cape event

    said: AtRoleModels SAwebelieve that eve-

    ryone can make a difference.

Terniel Oppel, who has been deaf for more

than 24 years, won the title Miss Western

Cape 2014. The pageant was held on Saturday,

6 September in Brackenfell. PHOTO: CHRIS JENKINS

Wanneer dinge in die middestad bietjie

    ltesame 177 gevalle van kindermo-

    lestering of seksuele misbruik in

die noordelike voorstede is die af-

gelope jaar by Badisa Trio aangemeld.

    Juanita Beukes, bestuurder vanmaat-

    sielkundige, aangebied by die algemene

    jaarvergadering vanBadisaTrio oor hoe

    seksuele misbruik.

    Landwyd

Volgens Beukes is daar landswyd ge-

    durende 2011/2012 altesame 25 862 geval-

le van seksuele oortredings teenoor kin-

    ders by die Suid-Afrikaanse polisiediens

    aangemeld.

    misbruik, s Beukes.

    Selfoon- en internet-uitbuiting van

kinders is ook aan die toeneem. Jou kind

is steeds blootgestel selfs agter sy eie

rekenaar in die veiligheid van sy ouer-

    huis, s sy.

Badisa Trio het kantore in Bellville,

    Kraaifontein en Scottsdene wat verant-

    woordelik is vir kinderbeskermings-

dienste in hierdie gebiede, asook die

    noordelike voorstede van Kaapstad, wat

    insluit Durbanville, Fisantekraal en die

    Durbanville-plase.

Ingevolge Artikel 110 van die Kinder-

wet (Wet 38 van 2005) het skoolhoofde,

    onderwysers en enige ander professie

wat met kinders werk, asook enige an-

    der persoonwat vermoeddat nkind sek-

sueel gemolesteer of uitgebuit word, n

wetlike verpligting om dit by die polisie

aan te meld, of by n geregistreerde kin-

    der- en gesinsorgorganisasie soos Badi-

    sa Trio.

    Onderwysers

    Ouers, onderwysers, leraars, maat-

    skaplikewerkers, sielkundiges, terapeu-

te en enigiemandwat n hart vir kinders

het, word uitgenooi na die praatjie, het

    Beukes ges.

    Die praatjiewordvanaf 18:30 in dieNG

    Kerk Bellville-Uitsig aangebied.

    Toegang is gratis,maar besprekings is

    noodsaaklik.

    hou.

    VCSV-vakansiedienste is n inisiatiefwaar

spel, want niks is so lekker as om n gesin

As lid van hierdie hegte span leer jy baie

verleen. Die slenter is onverwags vir

    enige wetsgehoorsame burger en gaan

waarskynlik baie mense in n slagyster

    laat trap.

danmoet jy iemandkontak by n selfoon-

saak behels. Jy skakel die nommer en n

    konstabel antwoord enwilweetwat jou

naam en ID-nommer is, s Van Rooyen.

Die konstabel soek glo op die reke-

naar na jou gegewens en so tussendeur

begin hy ander vrae vra, by watter bank

doen jy sake, hoe lank is jy al by die

bank, alles so terloops terwyl hy kamma

stelsel. As jy waag om sy vrae nie te be-

antwoord nie, raak die konstabel moei-

lik en dreig jou met arrestasie.

n Bejaarde vrou (78) is dood en n man (86)

    is ernstigbeseer toe nvragmotor gebotshet

    teen die silwerkleurige Mercedes Benz,

    waarin hulle gery het.

Die ongeluk het verlede Dinsdag om-

streeks 15:20 op die hoek van Amandel- en

    Bottelaryweg in Kuilsrivier plaasgevind.

    Volgens ao. Erica Crous, woordvoerder

van die Brackenfell-polisie, het die man en

vrou in die rigting vanStellenbosch gery en

wou hulle by die stel verkeersligte regs in

    eenhoping veroorsaak. Volgens ooggetuies

is verkeer herlei. Richard Coleman, woord-

family dog was killed, in the back-

yard while the family was inside the

house, unaware of what was taking

    place.

The family from Aurora is still shocked

at finding their dog dead in the yard of their

house in High Street on Sunday afternoon.

Raqual van Wyk wrote on Facebook last

    week that theyhad just returnedhomeafter

    celebratingherhusbands birthdayat 15:00.

We opened the doors, to let the kids and

my dog, Zack have a run outside while we

settled in. The kids came in to watch TV

with us, but we left Zack outside as we had

had him indoors the whole morning while

we were out. He was running around, cha-

sing the pigeons; barking at the kids wal-

king by, being a normal dog.

    Complaint about barking

My husband got up to tell him to settle

down, and as he just sat back down we he-

ard the most horrific howl. Thinking that

he had hurt himself somehow we all came

    running to see him.

My husband got to him first and screamed

that I must keep the kids away. Seeing the

look of panic on my husbands face as he

tried to get the door open, and looking down

at the fear in my five-year-olds eyes is so-

mething I will never forget, she recalled.

    VanWyk toldTygerBurger that Zackwas

like a member of the family. The Border

Collie Labrador cross entered their lives as

a puppy when they got him at an adopt-a-

pet day at Stodels as a birthday gift for their

son. According to Raqual, about four

    months ago, a neighbour complained

about the dog barking. Then, about two

months ago, they received a letter from the

    municipality that theymust do something

about the barking or they will be fined.

We asked many of our neighbours if our

dog is bothering them, but they did not ha-

    ve a problem, she said.

    Licence required

After that, theykept Zack inside thehou-

se about 90% of the time, she said.

After an autopsy was performed at Ty-

gerberg Animal Hospital, an air gun pellet

was found in the dogs heart. Our children

were only metres away in the house when

    Zackwas shot,she says. Myhusbandand

parents had to soothe my boy while Zack

asphyxiated in his own blood. It was grue-

    some and traumatic, she said.

Col Marius Swanepoel said the bullet

must still go for ballistic tests to ascertain

which firearm was used, but that it looks

like a bullet from an air gun. People do

not need a licence for an air gun, he war-

ned. Charges of malicious damage to pro-

perty and firing a firearm in a residential

area is being investigated. In the meantime

the story has spread like wildfire on social

media, Raqual said. One Facebook user

even offered a R500 reward for any informa-

    tion linked to the incident.

jodhpurs, smart red and black jackets and

black equestrian caps to saddle up. This is

    a pageant of custom.

Ten minutes later the hunting horn sig-

nals and the huntsman bellows out: Gather

round, gather round! The horseswhinny as

the hounds start to howl in anticipation. The

    hunt is about to begin.

You will be forgiven for thinking this nar-

rative describes the start of fox-hunting sea-

son inBritain at the turn of the 19th century.

But in factTygerBurger joined amodern fox

hunt on the plains of Joostenbergvlakte on

    Sunday.

A large group of members of the Cape

Hunt Club (the oldest hunting club outside

of England) turned up at Horses Equestrian

Centre to revel in this age-old sport, still

    keenly supported in Cape Town.

Drag hunting is a non-competitive, cross-

country equestrian sport inwhich riders fol-

low foxhounds trained to follow a laid trail

of scent. The exciting course usually includes

numerous jumps and some natural hazards

such as river crossings. The trail of about 10

km is laid out in six legs for riders andhounds

    to take rests in between.

Colleen gives a brief explanation of the how

the modern version of a hunt is practised to-

day. Inmodern times foxes arent hunted an-

ymore and we use what is called a drag a

cloth scented with jackal urine, she ex-

plains. It is pulled by the dragsmanwho rides

out with the drag on a rope, four minutes be-

fore the hunt starts. The huntsman, who is in

charge of the hounds, will then lay the

    houndson the scentwith thehuntmaster lead-

    ing the riders, she says.

Before starting off, each rider quickly swal-

    lowsdown the traditional stirrupcup (usually

whisky or liqueur) while the dragsman goes

ahead with the drag. Then, exactly four min-

utes later, the hounds are on their way, while

excited spectators are driven out ahead in off

road vehicles to get a good vantage point. On

a hillside near the end of the first leg, the vehi-

    cles comea stopand spectatorswait inhushed

excitement for the hounds and the first riders

    to come around the corner.

Their patience is soon rewarded when a

minute later the pack of hounds charge

around the corner with 21 riders on horse-

    back, hot on their heels.

    HollyMiller (15) fromEdgemeadhas par-

ticipated in four hunts. It is all about vibe!

The hounds, the fast ride, the clothing and

the entire tradition of the day, she says.

The energetic hounds are bred for their

strong hunting instincts and keen sense of

smell. It is fascinating towatch them follow

the scent, and if they lose it for a few sec-

onds it is soon picked up again.

At the age of fivemonthswe start taking

them on puppy walks and at eight months

they are coupled with an older hound. So

they essentially teach each other to hunt,

says Colleen. On the last stretch hounds

and horses stop at a small farm dam for a

quick dip. It doesnt matter how many

hunts you have done, it always remains

challenging and therein lies the adrenalin

rush, says rider Sonet Geyer. It is a very

fast paced gallop and you have to concen-

trate all the time. You have to cross rivers

and ditches on terrainwhere 4x4s dont even

go and although the hounds lead the way,

you as a rider still have to be in full control

of your horse and react quickly to any situa-

    tion, she says.

In essence the sport mimics the tradition-

al British fox hunt, which in its original

form, due to the cruelty to animals, has been

    banned in theUnitedKingdomover adecade

ago. But one thing remains the same - devil-

    ish good fun.

Police in Bellville are on high alert after a

recent spate of theft out of motor vehicles.

    Captain Fienie Nimb, spokesperson for

the Bellville Police, says theft out of motor

vehicles has increased in areas such as

Boston, Oakdale and the CBD. Items of va-

lue that are taken includes laptops, tablets,

wallets and cellphones. We urge people to

remove these items or lock them away, out

of sight of potential criminals, says Nimb.

Thieves target the CBD during the day,

while they move around in Oakdale after

the sun sets. Cars that are parked in drive-

ways and in the street are the targets. Vehi-

cle ownersmust be vigilant and try to park

cars behind locked gates and in garages.

An old trick is also rearing its ugly head

as thieves use remote jamming to interrupt

the signal of central locking systems. They

press an alternative remote, so while you

think your car is locked it is still open and

then they pounce. The police want to urge

people tomake sure that the cars are locked

    before they walk away.

    One often reads and hears

    about motorcyclists involve-

    ment in road accidents more

often than not, the cause of the

accident is placed at the feet of

    the other road user.

    While sitting in peak hour

traffic on a national road last

week, I was really annoyed at

    the number of bikers zig-zag-

    ging their way through the

    gridlocked traffic.

    With my senses on high

    alert, I noticed most motorcy-

    clists would either speed past

    vehicles in the gap between

    lanes, or manoeuvre their way

through the traffic to get to the

front. They also seem to force

their way into turning lanes at

    robots or stop-streets, with

little or no regard for other

    motorists.

    Understandably, their chosen

    mode of transport allows them

to skip the traffic which we, to

    great frustration have to

    endure. A little respect while

    meandering through vehicles

    would be appreciated.

am one of the occupants of a

unit where I have to listen to

the barking of dogs all day,

while the owners are sitting at

    work in bliss.

Yes, we also have a rule that

    owners or tenants have to

apply to keep an animal of a

specific size, but some of the

tenants say they have no pets.

Once they are in, a dog arrives,

too. When they apply, we are

    told the animal is miniature,

but then a dog the size of a

    border collie suddenly appears.

What can you do once they are

    in? Absolutely nothing.

    When they are confronted, we

    are told: Strange, we were

home all night or weekend and

    didnt hear the dog barking.

    Obviously the animal wont

    bark when you are home.

    Please think of the other

    occupants of the complex and

rather dont have an animal if

you cannot be there to take

them out for a walk, give them

    some love and attention and

    keep them quiet.

    Give this some thought.

    @dezzirorke

The grand dame of the Cape Winelands, re-

cently underwent a richly deserved face-

    lift.

Since Lanzerac was founded in 1692, the

estate has changed hands several times but

made its mark in 1961 with the release of

    theworlds first commercially producedPi-

    notage. Twoyears earlier, the iconicLanze-

rac Ros in its famous tear-shaped bottle,

saw the light and quickly became a national

favourite. Today this wine is nothing short

    of legendary.

    During thoseyears the estate experienced

a golden era, with the sprawling green

lawns in front of themanor house becoming

a hive of activity over weekends when lo-

cals religiously visited the cellar. It was,

and still is, an institution in the Stellen-

    bosch wine region.

Lanzerac was one of the first farms in

Stellenbosch and part of the towns culture.

Old Maties students remember it very well

and todays students still visit us like their

parents used to, says Zelda Furstenberg of

    the marketing team.

Way back then you had your first date

at Lanzerac and today we still welcome ma-

ny students to enjoy sundowners on our ter-

race before their university dinner dan-

    ces.

The tradition lives on with the current

buildings and facilities having been beauti-

    fully refurbished.

We upgraded our facilities to satisfy the

needs of todays guests. For example, what

a bride needed 40 years ago is not the same

as what a bride needs today, she says, with

a twinkle. In January this year, a new deli-

catessen was added to the list of offerings,

which adjoins the recently remodelled and

    renovated tasting room.

Elegantly designed in oak and stone, the

tasting room is an example of the highest

standards that Lanzerac prides itself in,

says Zelda. Here you can enjoy several wine

tasting options paired with either chocola-

te, cheese or other delicacies. Adding to

Lanzeracs old-world charm, are some em-

ployees who have worked there for genera-

tions. The most famous and well-loved is

Oom Manie who has been working in the

Taphuis, the hotel bar for 48 years now and

has met and served many famous guests li-

ke the Kennedys, says Zelda. Just across

from the Taphuis you can step into the Cra-

ven Lounge, where above the cosy fireplace

hangs anoil painting of the legendary rugby

administrator Doc Danie Craven and his

    dogBliksem,whouse to visit the farmevery

    Friday for meetings.

The estate boasts three ranges of award-

winning wines, with the exclusive Heritage

Range consisting of three wines: The Pio-

    nierPinotage 2011, LeGnral 2011, aCaber-

net-based blend, and Mrs English 2012, a li-

mited selection of the finest Chardonnay

and Pinot Blanc barrels of the particular

vintage. Both the hotel and the wine is sy-

nonymous with quality. Lanzerac is home

to many and for generations a place where

    everyone is welcome, says Zelda.

    Tyger Valley Centre to

    host clivia show

Tyger Valley Centre will be hosting the

Cape Clivia Clubs annual clivia show

from 27 to 28 September. The Arena is

the ideal setting for these magnificent

flowers as visitors will be able to view

them from up close and get a birds eye

view from the upper and lower levels.

    The flowering season for clivias

reaches its peak between August and

early October. The organisers hope to

have more than 200 plants on display.

Visitors attending the show will also be

able to purchase plants from top South

African breeders in full flower, seedlings

    as well as seeds.

R15 will get you in and the show will

be open on Saturday, 27 September from

09:00 to 17:00 and on Sunday, 28 Septem-

    ber from 09:00 to 16:00.

The Blanket Project, which was launched

by Media24s Leisure Books earlier this

year, has produced its first clutch of blan-

    kets.

On Thursday 4 September, 40 blankets

were handed over to Thuthuzela Care Cen-

tre for rape victims at Karl Bremer Hospi-

    tal in Bellville.

    Zaneta Burger, coordinator of the

project, said that apart from the blankets

that were delivered to the centre, a further

R11 000 was raised through an auction

whichwill be used to buy care packages for

    the residents of the centre.

In a call to action issuedbyLeisureBooks

in April, Media24 staff and Leisure Books

members were asked to knit 20cm x 20cm

squares and send these to the Leisure

    Books head office.

According to Burger, the response was

    overwhelming and the ParowWomens Ag-

    ricultural Association, who was assisted

with sewing the squares together, could

    hardly keep up.

    Approximately 50 knitted squares make

up a blanket and with the more than 10 000

    squares received, manymore blankets will

be ready to be donated in the next couple

of weeks. Various other charities will also

    receive blankets through this project.

    Dr DonavanAndrews, facilitiesmanager

at Thuthuzela Karl Bremer, extended a

heartfelt thank you to the Leisure Books

team and everyone involved in the project.

It is heartwarming to see how the commu-

nity jumps in and participates in these

projects and in their own way assist us in

the big task of looking after rape victims

    and minimising secondary trauma, he

said. The centre handles more than 200 cas-

es a month and is one of the four biggest

    centres in the country.

Due to the success of this first phase,

Burger says the project will continue with

requests to knit beanies, scarves, gloves

and toys. Squares will however still be wel-

come as the aim is to assist as many chari-

    ties as possible.

V Anyone who wishes to get involved in the project

can email Zaneta Burger [email protected].

    Daarwas verledeWoensdagoggend groot op-

winding by die Laerskool Brackenfell met

die amptelike wegspring van 2014 se Brac-

    kenfell-polisiefietstoer.

Om presies 09:20 het genl.maj. Hendrik

    teermet lewensgevaarlike situasies, waarin

Handhaaf n goeie balans. Gaan ry fiets

of speel buite, en los die playstation so biet-

jie, het hy die kinders aangepor.

Die feestelikheid van die oggend is aange-

help deur vertonings van plaaslike top-san-

    gersAmor enHugoNieuwoudt, wat soos al-

tyd die polisiediens bystaan het met gratis

vertonings, sowel as die provinsiale polisie-

    orkes.

daar by elke polisiekantoor aangedoen sal

R33 000 gestaan, so ek dink ons gaan ons tei-

ken haal, het ao. Erica Crous, woordvoer-

    der vanBrackenfell-polisie net voor dieweg-

    spring aan TygerBurger ges.

DieWes-Kaap se polisiediens is tot ophede

nog die grootste bydraer tot die nasionale

    fonds.

Ao.

    vra?
