Hooray! I am sure everyone is looking forward to some warmer weather. We are however, still in that time of the year when illness, colds and flu are prevalent. Please err on the side of caution when considering sending your child to school when unwell. Professional Learning Each week the dedicated staff that work with your children attend meetings to learn best practice around teaching and learning. This term we have a numeracy focus with the learning. These meetings occur on a Monday and Thursday afternoon from 3.30pm. This term we have had professional development in Mathematics, looking at ways to engage our students in multiplication and division activities. Congratulations: Student Learning A big congratulations goes to Mia, Kaiden and Taylor. They were our Year 6 team members who represented our school at the Lions Quiz. We were second at the challenge quiz and we won $200 for our school. I might add, that we out scored all the other competitors in the Maths section of the quiz. We were very proud, as Maths has been a curriculum focus in our School Strategic Plan and as part of our Annual Implementation Plan. Thank you to Mrs Esler for organising. Yard duty supervision Just a friendly reminder that staff are not on playground supervision duty until 8.45am each morning. They may be at school but will be busy preparing lessons for the day for teaching. If you require before school care, please consider contacting Camp Australia who coordinate this aspect of our community. They also look after the after school care program too which begins at 3.20pm and concludes at 6.00pm on school days. Child Safety: NO PARKING IN THE STAFF CARPARK There was a near miss in the staff carpark this week with a parent reversing and narrowly missing a small student. Both parties are fine but this is a timely reminder that NO parent is to park in the staff carpark. This is for safety reasons. Staff have taken this as a learning opportunity and have reminded all students of correct road safety procedures. Please role model our school’s expectations of Safety, Respect and Responsibility. ESSO Grant- Community Engagement We recently received a grant from Esso for over $4000. The school purchased 10 new iPads and protective covers with the money. The iPads are part of the school ’s mobile STEM unit. This week I attended a dinner hosted by Esso. It was wonderful to see our school feature on their slide show presentation to be able to thank the General Manger in person. A past student (Glenn) also attended. Glenn works as a chemist at the ESSO plant. He visited our school earlier in the year to talk to our students. It is great to see ESSO employing and working with our community.

Community Engagement Thank You
To quote the great Freddy Mecury “We are the Champions”. Our school’s idea to engage a Koorie artist to design and paint Bunjil the Eagle on a school wall won the Leader Newspaper competition. We were lucky enough to win $1000. Thank you to all those who voted and thank you to Rebecca Bastow for our submission.
Book Week and Book Fair: Student and Parent Engagement
This year’s Book Week theme is “Reading Is My Super Power”. Our dress up parade is on Tuesday 20th August at 9:15am. I can’t wait to see all the different book characters come alive. Fingers crossed the weather will be kind. The library will be open before and after school all of next week for parents and students to browse and to hopefully buy books for our students. The school receives a generous percentage of sales to spend on our library and other resources. A huge thank you to all parent volunteers for placing their name on the roster.

STEM Report
Students in 34W are learning this term about circuits, inputs and outputs using Littlebits kits (Thanks to ESSO). These kits allow us to create circuits quickly and easily as the components (bits) snap together with magnets. In this lesson students are working on a pinball style game and a Bluetooth controlled car. We are working towards our own creation this term and we have already seen some great ideas. Fantastic work 3/4W.
5/6E have made great progress developing their 3D design skills and are looking forward to 3D printing their own fidget spinner this term. They are using professional quality software ‘Solid Edge’ and are doing a great job of persisting and problem solving in an unfamiliar software environment. I am very proud of them!

Sustainability Newsletter
The Waste Pioneer Program is going well. Miss Amos and the team are leading the charge on this one and
creating an outstanding presentation to represent our school against 11 other schools. The topic is on how we
can create from plastics found in the ocean and / or how we can decrease the impact of plastics have on our
oceans. Our team has decided that using plastics found in the ocean and turning them into school products
such as: pencil cases, sharpeners, bags, crayon covers, erasers, scissors etc. All of these products will be
made 100% from ocean plastics and once finished will be able to be recycled again and again and again.
Great work to Miss Amos’ class for this suggestion. Good luck Waste Pioneers.
The Dolphin Research Ambassadors will be going on their 3rd excursion on Tuesday 20th August to Mornington
with Miss Hill to assess water levels, cleanliness and what species are around the Narambi Wetlands. We will
also be moving down towards Mornington Pier for the final part of the day.
Thank you for supporting the changes to our lunch orders we are putting in place so part of our many sustaina-
ble practises this was the next step. We have stopped offering the opportunity to receive drinks from the milk
bar as they often come with a straw or add unnecessary waste / litter to our school. We are providing alterna-
tives and remember SAY NO TO STRAWS, we are a straw free school so please help support this movement.
Fact: It takes about 450 years just for one plastic bottle to break down in the ground.
