TWO MONTHS INTO THE HURRICANE SEASON - BE PREPARED AND MAKE SURE YOU HAVE A PLAN IN PLACE On June 1, 2012, we officially entered the hurricane season and from mid to late August we will be entering the most active part of the season. It is important to be prepared during hurricane season because it can help keep both you and your family safe. The 2012 hurricane season as mentioned started on June 1 and will end on November 30, 2012. According to the National Hurricane Center, the peak of hurricane season goes from mid-August to late October and it is during this time that most tropical cyclones form in the Atlantic Basin. It is important to note though that dangerous hurricanes can happen at any time during hurricane season. All four counties currently in District 32-Aransas, Calhoun, San Patricio and Nueces-are included among the 14 Tier One counties along the Texas coast. This means that these counties are most likely to be affected if a hurricane makes landfall. It is important that our area, as well as all Texans, prepare for hurricanes by staying informed, creating a disaster plan and following necessary steps to keep their families safe. When hurricanes make landfall or get close to land, they can affect the lives of thousands of Texans along the coast and across the State of Texas. There arevarious tips on being prepared in case of a hurricane. Some of the tips include the preparation of a family disaster plan. A family disaster plan includes planning for hazards that could affect your family as well as home. Vulnerability to storm surge, flooding and wind should be reviewed. You should locate safe rooms or places in your house to store items if a hurricane hazard develops. It is important that families determine evacuation and escape routes from your home and places to meet in case of an emergency. Also, have an out-of-state friend as a family contact so that all family members have a place of contact. Don’t forget to plan for taking care of your pets in case of evacuation. In addition, families need to create a disaster supply kit. The National Hurricane Center suggests that your disaster supply kit should include such things as: Water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation Food, at least a three-day supply of non-perishable food Battery-powered or hand crank radio and a NOAA Weather Radio with tone alert and extra batteries for both Flashlight and extra batteries First aid kit Whistle to signal for help Dust mask to help filter contaminated air and plastic sheeting and duct tape to shelter-in-place Moist towelettes, garbage bags and plastic ties for personal sanitation Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities Manual can opener for food Local maps Cell phone with chargers, inverter or solar charger Living along the coastline also means preparing for hurricanes by retrofitting your house. It is important to strengthen the outside of your home so wind and objects do not tear openings in your roof or walls. Some people may want to find out about flood insurance. The National Flood Insurance is a pre-disaster flood program designed to reduce flood disasters. The National Flood Insurance program can be called at 1-888-CALL-FLOOD, Extension 445. In addition to getting your family, pets and homes safe and prepared, there are various state websites for hurricane preparedness and evacuation, including telephone numbers. Some important contacts include Statewide Road Conditions which can be called at 1-800-452- 9292 and going to Texas Online - The Official Portal of Texas at www.texasonline.com . You can also go to my website which will provide you links, websites to various sources for hurricane preparedness, planning for an evacuation, tips on hurricane preparedness as well as state and federal government resources. Also, if you are elderly or disabled and need hurricane evacuation assistance, you can call 2-1-1. This service will assist you in hurricane evacuation. Another great source to help with your hurricane preparedness is the National Hurricane Center (NHC) which can be found at www.nhc.noaa.gov/ . On the NHC site you can find additional tips on hurricane preparedness, hurricane tracking charts, and up-to-date reports on weather activity occurring in the Atlantic Basin along with many other things. Overall, being prepared for a hurricane and living in a coastal region is very important. Hopefully, this will continue to be a quiet and safe season. As always, my offices are available at any time to assist with questions, concerns or comments (Capitol Office, 512-463-0672; District Office, 361-949-4603). - State Representative Todd Hunter, District 32 Volume: 25 No.: 9060 PUBLISHERS - K D & S B GUTIERREZ © August 7, 2012

SIKH TEMPLE GUNMAN WAS EX-SOLDIER LINKED TO RACIST GROUP

The gunman who killed six people at aWisconsin Sikh temple was a 40-year-old U.S. Army veteran and authoritiessaid they were investigating possiblelinks to white supremacist groups andhis membership in a skinhead rockband. The assailant, who was shot deadby police at the scene on Sunday, wasnamed Wade Michael Page, a formerU.S. soldier who served from 1992 to1998, according to John Edwards, thepolice chief of Oak Creek, a suburb ofMilwaukee and home to the 400-member temple. Page killed six peopleand seriously wounded three, includinga police officer, at the Sikh Temple ofWisconsin as worshippers prepared forreligious services. The victims were fivemen and one woman, aged between 39and 84. Members of the Sikhcommunity said the president of thecongregation and a priest were amongthe victims. Authorities said they weretreating the attack as a possible act ofdomestic terrorism. American Sikhs saidthey have often been singled out forharassment, and occasionally violentassault, since the September 11, 2001,attacks because they are mistaken asMuslims due to their colorful turbansand beards. "The definition of domesticterrorism is the use of force or violencefor social or political gain, so that'sobviously what we're looking at," FBIspecial agent Teresa Carlson said at anews conference on Monday, addingthat authorities were looking at Page'sties to white supremacists. U.S. militarysources said Page had been dischargedfrom the Army in 1998 for "patterns ofmisconduct" and had been cited forbeing drunk on duty.Page had served inthe military for six years but was neverposted overseas. He was apsychological operations specialist andmissile repairman who was laststationed at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, the sources said. In June 1998 he wasdisciplined for being drunk on duty andhad his rank reduced to specialist fromsergeant. He was not eligible to re-enlist. Page had been a member of theskinhead band End Apathy, based inFayetteville, North Carolina, in 2010,said Heidi Beirich, director of theintelligence project at the Southern

Poverty Law Center (SPLC) inMontgomery, Alabama.

He also tried to buy goods from theNational Alliance, a neo-Nazi group, in2000, she said. The SPLC describes theNational Alliance on its website as"perhaps the most dangerous and bestorganized neo-Nazi formation inAmerica."

WANTED TO 'MOVE FORWARD'

In a 2010 online interview with EndApathy's record label Label56, Pagesaid he had founded the band in 2005because "I realized ... that if we couldfigure out how to end people's apatheticways, it would be the start towardsmoving forward."

Asked in the interview what kind oftopics he wrote about in his lyrics, Pagesaid: "The topics vary from sociologicalissues, religion, and how the value ofhuman life has been degraded by beingsubmissive to tyranny and hypocrisythat we are subjugated to."

Describing how the events unfolded,Chief Edwards told reporters the firstofficer on the scene found a victim inthe temple parking lot and went torender assistance. The officer was thenshot eight or nine times at very closerange with a handgun, Edwards said.

The gunman then fired on a police car, ignoring officers' commands to drop hisweapon, and was shot and killed bypolice.

The wounded officer, identified asBrian Murphy, 51, was being treated ina hospital, Edwards said.

After the shooting, police searched anapartment at a duplex in the Cudahyneighborhood near Milwaukee, presumed to be the residence of thegunman. Generators and floodlightswere set up along the street and a bombsquad was on the scene.

Edwards said they were confident Pagewas a "lone gunman," but police werelooking for a "person of interest" -- anindividual who showed up on the scene

after the shooting and left before policecould ascertain what he was doing there.

Bernard Zapor, special agent in chargefor the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol,Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, saidthe weapon used in the shooting was a9mm handgun that had been legallypurchased. Page emptied severalmagazines and several more unusedmagazines were found on the scene.

Wisconsin has some of the mostpermissive gun laws in the country. Itpassed a law in 2011 allowing citizensto carry a concealed weapon.

A search of a nationwide public database showed that Page had lived atsome 20 addresses in Wisconsin, NorthCarolina, Colorado, California andTexas.

Jagjit Singh Kaleka, the brother of thepresident of the temple who was amongthe six Sikhs killed, said he had no ideawhat the motive was for the attack.

The shooting came just over two weeksafter a gunman killed 12 people at atheater in Aurora, Colorado, where theywere watching a screening of newBatman movie "The Dark KnightRises."

The September 11 attacks were carriedout by Muslims linked to the al Qaedamilitant group led by Osama bin Laden.Sikhs are not Muslim, but manyAmericans do not know the difference, members of the Sikh community said.

There are 500,000 or more Sikhs in theUnited States but the community inWisconsin is small, about 2,500 to3,000 families, said local Sikhs. Thetemple in Oak Creek was founded inOctober 1997.

The Sikh faith is the fifth-largest in theworld, with more than 30 millionfollowers. It includes belief in one Godand that the goal of life is to lead anexemplary existence.
