The Unjustified Cut jumps from the ink

dispersing on the writing to the girl combing

another girls hair. This is suggestive of not

only a disjointed relationship as the writingisnt fully visible which could imply a lack of

communication, but a disjointed plot. The

Non-Continuity editing of the merging of the

spreading ink on the paper could be

interpreted as a combination of both reality

    and the supernatural.

The use of the inkblots (Psychological technique

known as the Rorsach test)as a

    superimposition throughout the opening

sequence is evident of impending mental

suffering and some sort of emotional or

repressed conflict that requires therapy .

The superimposition of the inkblot over the picture

shows what could either be an X-Ray or an

Ultrasound. However, this appears to be ademonic figure instead of a foetus as a result

of the inkblot skewing the view. This could

allude to an evil or sinister entity being born.

The long take of what could be musicbox is the longest shot of the openingsequence, which changes theaudiences perception of the scene bydrawing their attention. The rigidmovements of the ballerina figures arein a disjointed supernatural movementand is unlike those of a human. Ballet

has childhood connotations and istypically associated with girls, despitethis the movements are not graceful orfluid like that expected of ballet and arenot only disturbing but disconcerting.

    Sound

The Non diegetic music which is classical

music at the beginning of the clip

    juxtaposes with the images shown

throughout the clip which gives contrast

between the good and the evil shown

through the music as the good and the

images as the evil. (contrapuntal music)

String instruments give the image of the

    romantic form. This imagery could

symbolise that there is some kind of

    relationship which will be developed

    throughout the film.

The legato of certain notes shows thatsome problems during the film have been

there for a while which contrasts with the

staccato notes which we could interpret as

    dangerous events getting closer.

The volume of the stringed instruments alsodiffered at certain points, this is effectivebecause it builds tension and foreshadowsdangerous events to come during the film.

The high pitched xylophone has childlikeimagery, this shows an innocence which isconveyed through the opening credits. This

contrasts with the eerie violins, this thereforecould dhow that children are in danger duringthis film.

The cellos and double basses in thebackground are deeply pitched, they give thesense of an ever looming doom for thecharacters within the film.

More stringed instruments gradually buildcreating tension then suddenly stop to revealone violin. This could symbolise a key event inthe film, showing us that there is a gradualbuild up.

    Sound

As the music slows down at the end of theopening credits it could signify that theevents throughout the film have come toan end and have come to some sort ofresolution.

The big contrast in pitch during the openingcredits may symbolise a variety ofemotions, from calm to terrified. Thevariety of emotions delivered throughoutthe clip gives the sense of a horrorbecause it becomes almost erratic whichcan be seen in a person who is scared oraffected by disturbing events.

    Mise-en-scene

The colour white could suggest Purity/ Lostinnocence. The mask worn by one of thegirls could represent hiding or perhapsbeing taken over by a supernatural force. Itcould also suggest an element of disguiseand mystery.

The childlike gestures used by the childrensignify a sense of innocent and a sense ofhorror as the everyday is being twisted by asense of horror or something sinister isdestroyed by everyday life.

The close up of the music box is effectiveas it is an everyday object and this could

suggest a sense that things are not whatthey seem.

    Mise-en-scene

The use of silhouette is effective as it showsthe two girls brushing their hair. It couldshow that the normality of life that no longerexists. The use of shape in the background iseffective as the shape helps to mirror theimage behind it. For example the dancer ismirroring the background image.

The ink blot silhouette could also be ametaphor for murder/blood being spilled. The use of the smudge could suggest that wedo not know where the silhouette begins andthe image ends.

    Mise-en-scene

The use of neutral background is

effective as it helps to add the calm

    atmosphere, however the audience

knows this is about to end. The image of

the gate is effective as it is could suggest

a sense of insanity and being locked

    away.

    The minimalistic colour scheme is

effective as it helps to create a sense of

    mystery. However the bright colours

used on the little girl are effective as it

could suggest a feeling of childhood

being lost and of being controlled by

    some kind of force.

Mise-en-sceneThe typography used is atmospheric and helps to create a

tense atmosphere. The typography used is leadingbetween the letters. The writing often appears over the

image and this helps to add to the old-fashioned feel of

the film. The hand written font adds to the realistic feel

and the crossing off could suggest a sense of danger and

    death.

The use of shallow focus and fade out helps to create adisorder sense of reality and darkness is going descend

and that all is not what it seems.

The reason why we decided to focus on Two Eyes staring,

instead of going for really obvious horror films is because

it uses everyday objects to create tension and the use of

the ink blot background is very unique and unusual. Thisis not an obvious horror technique as in slash horror

    movies such as Saw.

    Camera

Angles- There are high angles on; apool of, what appears to be blood; on

the books of images and also the

powder which is being poured into a

    drink.

The high angle makes these shots

seem more ominous and they also

make it seem as though we are the

    ones overlooking the event, which

    makes it seem more personal.

The canted angle of the water

running down the wall adds a sense

of danger and confusion. The water

could be used to connote tears and

sadness, the angel the shot is

displayed in makes the water seem

out of place which confuses the

    audience slightly.

    Camera

The medium shots of silhouettes, pans

over them slightly, giving them a ghostly

feeling which adds to the mystery of what

    the film is about.

There are some close ups, one of which is

of a young girl, and they make it a little

clearer that whatever is in the shot is of

importance to the rest of the film as we

are made to focus on them.
