• Is owned by Twitter, Inc. was incorporated in California. • Founded in 2006• Enables users to send and read short messages called tweets

• These tweets are displayed on your profile page and on the home page of everyone that follows you.

Twitter Stats • 460,000 new sign-ups daily • 155,000,000 Tweets per day • 200,000,000+ registered users

Why use Twitter?• Learn about what is going on in your industry – Gives you access

to the world.• Get answers to your questions• Conferences are using Twitter - Questions and remarks are being

sent to the speaker and their staff.• Now that LinkedIn went Public – Twitter will grow as more

businesses are getting involved in social media• Exposure• Networking• Chat rooms• Special discounts and promotions • Find some of the hidden jobs!

Things to do on Twitter?

• “Become an expert” - As an expert you become more visible to potential clients and employers

• Share useful content and quotes from your industry

• Ask relevant questions and engage others• Share information and resources in your niche• Join chats in your industry• We will add to this list later…

Don’t…

• When you send a message do not refer to it as twittering. You are tweeting.

• You can stalk people BUT don’t spam

• Don’t abbreviate - too much

• Remember everything you share is part of a public stream. Anybody can read it! Examples: “I am at the Braves game with my friends!” (You called in sick to work!)

“I hate my boss” “I am going to be late to __ again”

• Create my account– Your username can be your name or as a job

Your First Tweet

• Open your email and click on the link Twitter sent you. We will continue working from this new window.

• Write your first tweet.• In the box under “What’s happening” type in a short message.

Setting-up a Twitter account

• Set-up your account and profile– Go to the bar on the top of your twitter page – Click on arrow by your handler name – click on settings.

• This page will open up.

• Next slides will provide a brief explanation of each tab.

Twitter

• Mobile – Put your cell phone number in the space. Then download the Twitter application on your phone.

• Notifications – Choose when and how often you would like Twitter to send you emails. Not necessary.Examples: When someone is following you, messages, replies,

mentions etc.

• Design – Customize the way your Twitter looks. There are many different themes and colors, but don’t worry too much because we use so many applications that we do not see your site design.

• Applications - You can see and revoke access to sites you have allowed access.

Twitter Profile

• Click on Profile tab - Edit• Upload picture to

differentiate yourself.– Use your LinkedIn picture – Be consistent so you are

recognized.• Name – Limit 20 characters • Web – Put your personal

website or LinkedIn website address

Twitter Profile Cont.• Bio – 160 characters including spaces. Write a bio that explains what you have to offer. Keywords are important, look at what you have on your resume

and LinkedIn account. Again remember to be consistent on all your social media presence.

Home

• On top of page go to Twitter tool bar• Click on Home – Timeline - stream of Tweets in real time order

– @mentions - contains @username anywhere in the body of the Tweet. Use it when you want a particular person to read the message.

• Top of page, go to Twitter tool bar• Click on Profile - tabs– Tweets – shows you all your tweets– Favorites - You can choose your favorite tweets– Following - Will show you everyone you are

following.– Lists – You can create and manage lists of subjects

to follow. Become an expert in your field. • Messages – check daily and respond

Who to Follow • Click on Who to Follow

Complete your profile before you start sending out invitations.

– Twitter will make suggestions usually based on who you follow and more.– Browse interests– Find Friends and associates

How do you find people to follow?

• When you find someone to follow, pick others from their list to follow.

• Useful sites– Twellow.com - directory– Followerwonk.com – search bios– Listorious.com – keyword searches on your

interests, then follow individuals on the list.– Twibes.com – List of groups to follow

Hashtags

• Hashtag - Use “#” is used to mark keywords or

topic in a Tweet. • Also use it to search for similarly-themed

tweets. Examples: #Braves #Brands #HR– www.Hashtags.org Example:

• #Jobhuntchat – resume and cover letters- #jobseekers, #jobs, #hiring- #ITJobs, HRJobs,

- #Atlanta, #NYC, #Miami• Give advice or get answers on #jobadvice• Use “#Q” to ask questions on anything• Search - type a few words without the hashtag.
