Study on Home Taping a"We're losing in excess of $600 million a yearthrough home taping," bristled BrianRobertson, President of the CanadianRecord Industry Association (CRIA). He wasreferring to the information contained in therecently completed Study on Home Taping.

The Music Copyright Action Group(MCAG) released this study (Mar. 8) at apress conference in Toronto, attended bymembers of the MCAG and major recordingartists.

"The facts are there," continuedRobertson. "There were 4,200 albums releas-ed in Canada in 1982 . . . four years later, in1986, this number was down to 2,800. The in-dustry is in trouble. We've got to stop thisproblem of home taping. It's pretty frighten-ing to be faced with the knowledge that . . .for every record sold, one is illegally taped."

The report revealed that blank tape saleshave risen 43 percent from 1983 to 1986 andthat the price of records and pre-recordedtapes rose less than half the increase in theCPI between 1975 and 1985.

The report further revealed that of peo-ple surveyed in the 15 to 54 age group, 63 per -

Bendeth to BMG Canadaas A&R DirectorDon Kollar, President and General Manager,BMG Music Canada, has announced the ap-pointment of David Bendeth as Director, Ar-tist and Repertoire.

Currently signed as a writer for DunbarMusic worldwide, Bendeth is considered oneof the leading songwriters in Canada, penn-ing material for several name internationaland domestic recording acts including JoeCocker, Jeff Beck, Billy Newton -Davis andPlatinum Blonde.

In making the above announcement,Kollar noted, "We are fortunate to haveDavid's talent and expertise available to us,"continuing with, "As an artist, songwriterand producer in his own right, he brings aninvaluable, comprehensive understanding ofall facets within A&R."

Bendeth will work out of BMG's Scar-borbugh office until early June, when he willre -locate downtown to the MuchMusicCITY -TV building.

shuddering revelationcent had home taped copyright material inthe previous year. As well, heavy tapers usedmore than 20 blank tapes a year, whilemedium tapers used six to 20 blank tapes ayear. These two groups apparently accountedfor 67 percent of all home tapers and 93 per-cent of all home taping. Home tapers used anaverage of 9.5 blank tapes per year.

The report indicated that a majority ofthose surveyed, who expressed an opinion, favour compensation to reimburse copyrightowners for income lost due to home taping. Itwas also indicated that heavy tapers, andthose who taped to save money are most infavour of compensation.

The report is being studied by the Com-munications Department of the federalgovernment, and it's hoped that severalrecommendations will be included in the se-cond phase of the new Copyright Act. One ofthese is the establishment of a royalty, basedon a percentage of the price of a blank tape. There was a suggestion of a royalty of $2 percassette, which the group believes approx-imates the income lost to creators, per-formers and record companies through hometaping. Robertson was sorpewhat optimistic

of that figure. "To be more realistic, wewould be looking at a royalty of 12 . . .perhaps 20 percent of the retail cost of acassette," which is apparently the royalty ratein some European countries.

Also on hand to give their views from acreator/performer standpoint were Atticrecording artist Lee Aaron, Eddy Schwartzand Triumph's Gil Moore.

Jacques Brel's Alive returns to TorontoJacques Brel Is Alive And Well And Living InParis (based on the songs of Jacques Brel),returns to Toronto in the unique setting ofMassey Hall. The 2600 seat theatre was pick-ed apparently because of the lack of livetheatre space in Toronto, and as onespokesperson put it, "since there's nodialogue, the show can ideally be done in aconcert setting."

Brian Robertson is co -producing withBlue Light Entertainment (Labatt'sBrewery), and with Eric Blau. The latter, whoowns the rights to the production, did theoriginal translation of the Brel version.

This is the first time in recent history thata theatre piece is actually being done inMassey Hall, and if it's successful, it's ex-pected that Labatt's will stage similar ven-tures, giving the brewery an opportunity tobroaden their interests, other than with justrock concerts.

FM -96's Dolny producedRPM reported last week that the studios .ofCKIK-FM in Calgary had been used to pro-duce The Ballad Of Eddie Edwards by TheGood Brothers, a tribute to the British Olym-pic skier, who had become the "talk" of theGames. This information was incorrect, asCal Walker, Program Director of FM -96CHFM points out.

The idea for the song came aboutthrough a meeting, the station's GeneralManager Roy Hennessy had with BruceGood of The Good Brothers at the station. The conversation got around to British skierEddie Edwards and the almost cult followinghe had garnered in such a short period oftime. "Eddie showed that the OlympicGames were for everyone," explains Walker."Everytime he took off, with his arms flail-ing, the crowds went wild. He's a blue collarworker . . . a plasterer, back home in England. . . and he made it to the Olympics."

Good was so impressed by this

The show will run for five days fromMar. 17, with options to extend the run if thebox office justifies it.

This is the 20th Anniversary of the Brelwork, with four productions being mountedaround the world: New York, Toronto, Lon-don and Sydney.

Elly Stone, an original cast member 20years ago, and who also starred in the film ofthe same title, is directing the production, which stars Kathy Michael McGlynn, BrentCarver, Gary Krawford and Louise Pitre. In-strumental backing is supplied by RickWhitelaw (guitar), Gary Binsted (bass), Mar-ty Morell (percussion), with conductor/ -pianist Rick Fox.

CBS has re -pressed a quantity of thesoundtrack which will be available in LP(black vinyl) cassette and compact disc. SamThe Record Man will be selling this product,on sight, at Massey Hall during the run.

Goods tribute to EdwardsBritisher's spirit, he quickly put words andmusic together, Hennessy offered the studiosof FM -96 and Gord Dolny, an FM producerat the station, produced the master of TheBallad Of Eddie Edwards, all within a matterof a few hours. Needless to say, on airing thesong, the station was swamped. "U.S.A. To-day contacted us," continues Walker, theBritish Attache stopped by the station to pickup a copy, and we received an autographednote from Eddie. The song literally shook upCalgary."

The Olympic people were apparently soimpressed with the added promotion boost tothe games, through the recording, they'veasked both CHFM-FM and CISS-AM ofthe Moffat chain to assist in the organizationof the Olympic Appreciation Party to be heldMar. 26. "This will be a really big Calgaryblow-out," concludes Walker, "and nodoubt The Ballad Of Eddie Edwards will playa significant role in the activities."

Technics bumps up imagewith new CD playersAlthough the CD hardware penetration inCanada is hovering around the 12 percentmark (as opposed to 20 percent in the U.S.),Technics would appear to be leading the fieldin attempting to close this gap. Available inApril will be two new CD players (SL -P990and SL -P770), both designed with a 4-DAC18 -bit high resolution system for improvedlow-level signal fidelity.

The 4-DAC system uses 2 digital analogconverters in each channel, one for thepositive half and one for the negative half ofthe waveform. A newly developed computerchip supervises the distribution and switchingof information, which allows for what isdescribed as "a more accurate repesentationof the original sound recordings."

Of particular interest with these two newplayers is the Auto Peak Search which allowsthe user to set the recording levels on a tapedeck as accurately as possible. The Edit keyallows the player to compute the songs andplaying times which will fit on each side of atape. The large 2 -speed Search Dial, which isexclusive to Technics, allows the user to cuethe disc either forward or backward in 0.04sincrements. As well, the 20 -key pad enablesdirect access to any track on the compact discfor play or programming. This trackingsystem is so fast it takes, at most, one secondto arrive at the first selected track.

musically, his voice is really exceptional, and with all the friends he's made over the 50

years he's been around, a recording of operetta arias by him could be a big seller as

well, or how about a single of Try To Remember and As Time Goes By(EC: How

    about a duet with Patti??)

Plant's fourth album earns singer"The sense of humour that used to prevail inthe golden days of rock 'n' roll," says RobertPlant, while answering questions at a pressconference held the day his latest solo album,Now And Zen, was released, "ought to be, atleast, brought back into the limelight again."Adding, however, that rock music itself isn'tbeing taken seriously enough today.

Having taken quite enough flak, fromboth the critics and fans alike, since his lastHoneydripper's effort, Plant was on the of-fensive; speaking casually of his formerbands, the punk movement, moderntechnology and whatever other topics curiousjournalists chose relevent. Though withheightened enthusiasm he spoke of his newband, very much like a child with a new toy.

Yet, Now And Zen is being takenseriously, at radio and retail, entering theRPM charts last week at No. 52.

"I've been returned to a period that I'dforgotten all about," he explains. "I spentthe last three solo albums trying to forge innew directions, denying the presence of LedZeppelin. Now, with these young guys, I feelI can do whatever I want to."

Apparently, this includes playing someof the golden oldies during his forthcomingtour, which kicks off in Quebec City thisMay.

"I think I've been one of the main ex-ponents of self-conscious rock 'n' roll, but Idon't think that's what it's all about . . . rock'n' roll is to have a good time." Andalthough he'd like to put Stairway To Heavenaway in a corner, on the road Plant wants toavoid being "one of those cabaret artists"who needs to rely on their back catalogues ofmaterial.

"I've distanced myself from Led Zep-pelin to be able to actually play Led Zeppelinsongs without thinking too much about it,"

    COVER STORY- by Graeme Boyce

Clannad: a step closer to reaching a new audience With the recent release of Clannad's latest

album, titled Sirius, which was produced by veteran Greg Ladanyi, the band actually ex- pected the imminent and usual range of

criticism for their obvious change in direc- tion; one that was heralded by a change in at-

titude and Live Aid, explains founding member and lead vocalist Maire Brennan. For one thing they wouldn't mind break-

ing into the North American audience; for in- stance, their last tour of Canada was nine

years ago: one night at Toronto's El Mocam- bo. Hence, in order to do so, the Irish band

resolved that perhaps instead, of hiring another European producer that, in fact, an

American might be the answer. "Especially in England," Brennan con-

tinues, "I've read reviews for Macalla, the last album, and they've nearly said the same

    thing about this album . . .

'They're losing it. They're losing their Celticism. Why do they

    need Bono?' . . .

and yet the review for this album was 'Oh, Macalla was such a good

album.' The Legend album before that was totally different too.

"We've always done what we've felt and are most happiest with, and if the songs

sound different, they must have already been

Plant's fourth album earns "The sense of humour that used to prevail in

the golden days of rock 'n' roll," says Robert Plant, while answering questions at a press

conference held the day his latest solo album, Now And Zen, was released, "ought to be, at least, brought back into the limelight again."

Adding, however, that rock music itself isn't being taken seriously enough today.

Having taken quite enough flak, from both the critics and fans alike, since his last

Honeydripper's effort, Plant was on the of- fensive; speaking casually of his former bands, the punk movement, modern

technology and whatever other topics curious journalists chose relevent. Though with heightened enthusiasm he spoke of his new

band, very much like a child with a new toy. Yet, Now And Zen is being taken

seriously, at radio and retail, entering the RPM charts last week at No. 52.

"I've been returned to a period that I'd forgotten all about," he explains. "I spent

the last three solo albums trying to forge in new directions, denying the presence of Led

Zeppelin. Now, with these young guys, I feel I can do whatever I want to."

Apparently, this includes playing some of the golden oldies during his forthcoming

tour, which kicks off in Quebec City this May.

"I think I've been one of the main ex- ponents of self-conscious rock 'n' roll, but I

    don't think that's what it's all about . . .

rock 'n' roll is to have a good time." And

although he'd like to put Stairway To Heaven away in a corner, on the road Plant wants to avoid being "one of those cabaret artists" who needs to rely on their back catalogues of

material. "I've distanced myself from Led Zep-

pelin to be able to actually play Led Zeppelin songs without thinking too much about it,"

in there. We'd be bored and the music would be boring, if we didn't take that next step.

We're not trying to become a rock band or anything, it's just that we're trying to for-

mulate different sounds and different ways at looking at our music." On the new album, Robbie Blount pro-

vides guitar, with Steve Perry on vocals, Bruce Hornsby on piano and co -producer

Russ Kunkel on drums throughout. The addi- tion of these musicians has mystified both their fans and critics, who see these additions

as the label's attempt at garnering greater ex- posure within the industry and at the con- sumer level as well. However, assures Bren-

nan, this is not the case. Apparently, Ladanyi brought Kunkel in-

to the project because the band needed a drummer, "and this is a perfect choice for

us," she advises. "Russ coming in, and rather than being Russ Kunkel, he came in

and got very much involved in getting to know our side of the music, getting within the Celtic rhythmical end of our songs.

"But those musicians that you actually see on the album cover

    . . . believe it or not,

    either live near by . . .

I mean Robbie lived down the road and within a week he was com-

    singer due respect he continues.

So now there's enough distance between Plant and those "golden days," his new

album could easily be the follow-up to In Through The Out Door, Zeppelin's last

studio album, released in 1979. "The great thing about punk music and Led Zeppelin,

and REM and The DB's, is that it's not that smooth.

"The lyrics on Heaven Knows, which I didn't write, I find really great," he com- ments. "I've never actually sung anybody

else's songs, apart from Sea Of Love and a couple of Willie Dixon songs, and the con-

temporary cynicism of Johnstone and Barrett (bandmembers and songwriters) is like

teutonic disco or very angry disco. "They're young guys and they're street

guys, and they're ingratious, arrogant, and they're very much a part of the punk thing.

But at the same time they don't want to lie down and die with the U.K. Subs. They have

the essence of British anger, angst in music, and their lyrics are great.

"My enthusiasm is built around the peo- ple I'm playing with and from the fact that

their contribution to this is almost greater than mine. I mean I've written most of the stuff and a lot of the music but their actual

enthusiasm and naivety has been the driving thing for me, because for the first time in years I haven't had to cope with the 30 -year -

old -plus syndrome. It's a straight ahead situation," he con- cludes, 'and there's no crap. There are no prima donnas. Even with the last band, Rob-

bie Blount had toured America three times, and he already had a kind of way of being,

which you couldn't shake. But these people are ready to make their statement and to

develop their own personalities, so it's very Fresh."

ing in and listening to the songs and coming up with ideas. It's very flattering when musi-

cians of that calibre want to have their name on your record; and the likes of Steve Perry

    and J.D. Souther . . .

just walked into the studio." Yet having a producer such as Ladanyi,

who has produced albums for Don Henley and Jackson Browne, among others, is going

to have an effect, Brennan concedes. "I suppose working with Greg and

Russell, they know so many musicians, but they were very excited doing this album that they thought was so fresh and new, that they were telling a lot of their friends about it. But

I think this is very natural now anyway. Peo- ple do want to play on your album and share

something on your record. "It's a very healthy attitude and ap-

    proach in music nowadays . . .

and there are a lot of other artists, well established artists like

Robbie Robertson and Peter Gabriel, doing it, probably since Live Aid and being touchy

about your music has opened up a bit." No matter though, Clannad are taking

their show on the road and this time around plan a more thorough undertaking of North

American dates, beginning hopefully, next month. "We're breaking something of the

old into the new," Brennan concludes, "rather than sticking to the one thing, other-

    wise I don't think we'd exist."

Unique Cathedral launch for Canadian Brass LP

The Canadian Brass will premiere their new CBS Masterworks recording of J.S. Bach: Art Of The Fugue, with a live concert of the

work, Mar. 17 at Toronto's St. James Cathedral. The concert will be free to the

public. As Joan Brown of CBS Masterworks ex- plains, "The Canadian Brass have achieved

widespread critical acclaim for their humour and crossover recordings. However, each

member is classically trained and is a virtuoso in his own right

    . . . and Bach's Art Of The

Fugue will show Canadian Brass fans another side of this flexible brass quintet."

Brown also points out that The Brass collaborated on Art Of The Fugue with the

late Glenn Gould, "who gave them much in- sight and encouragement to bring this project

to fruition. The recording is dedicated to his memory."

Slow CBS release period Michael Jackson, George Michael and Bruce

Springsteen album sales certainly haven't slowed down during this first quarter of the

new year, yet with a distinct lack of follow-up "superstar" product, with several exceptions

(most notably Toto's The Seventh One), releases that might have been overlooked in

the past, are getting serious attention at radio, retail and video outlets, and one such

example is the new Midnight Oil album, Diesel And Dust.

Although the label has been kept busy with their various marketing campaigns and

strategies, the new "Oils" effort was the right album released at the right time, believes Art

Graham, Manager, Pop Product, CBS Records Canada. The politically oriented

band, led by Peter Garrett, has been the sub- ject of several domestic attempts to break the

band here, long before the U.S. attempt with their previous album 10-9-8.

The Oil's album, currently tied -in to a "Thunder From Down Under" promotion directed primarily at retailers, has been mov- Axe debut for

released the first single of last year's Q-107 Homegrown winners, Simon Chase.

Thrill Of The Chase, now being readied for release.

boosts Oil's album ing up the charts steadily since its release and

hopes are that it will be the band's first album to surpass the gold plateau in a foreign ter-

ritory, as it continues to be one of the biggest sellers for CBS this year.

"They've delivered a record that, for the Oils, is extremely commercial yet for

anybody else who's listening to the Oils for the first time," Graham explains, "it's like:

`This isn't quite your average record .. . but I like it.' "I wouldn't say that the video is leading

the way, because the music, and in particular Beds Are Burning, is doing that, but the

video is certainly a good visual support item, simply because anybody who's new to the

band has no idea what these guys look like and I think Peter Garret

    . . . when you see

that video and a lot of people are seeing what Peter looks like for the first time, and are

putting that man to the voice . . .

I think it's having a very positive effect.

"It reinforces that individuality that the Oils have and that they're not just another

band of good looking guys, but I haven't had people come back raving about the video.

It's really a support tool, instead of a door

achievements of the various label's ter- ritories.

According to Jim Monaco, Canadian sales were the highest per capita of any coun-

you've got to have the airplay, you've got to have the press exposure and you've got to have the tour dates; and you've got to have a great record and that's what sells 300,000

Hot can do the same for `soca' - the fusion of Caribbean calypso and soul

    - says John White, a Toronto independent promoter, who has actually been promoting the musical form for the past 4 years.

Although Hot Hot Hot is not considered "traditional" soca, according to White it

doesn't satisfy the calypso condition of con- taining a message, the "beat" has it placed in

a "commercial" soca vein. "Calypso is political, or it can be funny,

but it's a story telling medium," White ex- plains, "with a flow, with constant lyrics.

Though the music is uptempo, very danceable and infectious; whereas soul is a laid back

groove. Calypso, which was popularized by Harry Belafonte, gave way to soca in the

(Caribbean) islands, where the material was oriented towards dancing as opposed to the message."

Already this new musical genre has become so popular, adds White, that again

this year, Toronto's Bamboo Club will pre- sent the annual "March About" which

    features ,

not only international artists (such as Jayson, the North American Calypso

King), but also domestic acts Odessey, Zano, Phase II and Brass Tracks.

The latter, he comments, have the best chance at securing a major record deal

because they have "youth on their side." Also, the band has a management team "bent

on breaking them through on all levels," something many of the other acts are lacking,

    White concludes.

    When you're HIP . . .

you re HIP Growing up in a small town may be a bringdown for some, but for the Tragically Hip, it was an inspiration for their first single release.

It all started in Kingston, Ontario, where the band performed extensive college and club gigs. With a rock solid foundation, raw lyrics and a rare determination, The Hip have built a following and created a spark which is catching on at AOR stations across the country.

Their self -titled album, released on Rock Records and distributed by BMG, was written by Gord Sinclair, Johnnie Fay, Gord Downie, Bobby Baker and published by Little Smoke Music and Roll Music.

CAPAC welcomes them all to the club of over 17,000 composers and publishers who combined, provide great music for Canadian and international radio programmers. Composers Authors and Publishers Association of Canada

Radio Graffiti designed to "liven up" radioWhen the first scheduled segment of DavidPritchard's Radio Graffiti goes to air thisApril, radio listeners, he believes, will betreated to the only program of its kind beingoffered today. "There's nothing like it inCanada," he boasts, "In fact, I look afterWestwood One America too, and I just don'tthink there's anything like it in NorthAmerica."

The magazine -styled show crosses thespectrum of contemporary issues (a lifestyleradio program that focuses on the entertain-ment industry) and features reviews ofrecords, books and cars; offers concertlistings, editorials and travel hints, as well asweekly music charts, both Canadian and in-ternational; and is presented in a fast -pacedand enthusiastic manner.
