Air NZ Wants Tourism Spend Ramped upAir New Zealand is calling on the governmentto increase its commitment to tourism in theface of softening global demand and travellers’growing environmental consciousness. The airline’s Deputy CEO Norm Thompsonsays it is critical that the government acts nowto protect the country’s market share given theslowing growth in tourism.Visitor arrivals to New Zealand have grown lessthan 1% in the past 12 months and are forecast togrow at just over 3.3% through to 2014.Mr Thompson says the government needs toprioritise the sector and ramp up the fundingto market New Zealand offshore. The $73million in annual government funding toTourism New Zealand to market New Zealandas a visitor destination overseas is not enoughto stimulate growth beyond the forecast figures,he says.“Tourism generates approximately $8.3 billiondollars in foreign exchange for New Zealand– a substantial return on each dollar investedby the government through Tourism NewZealand and businesses such as Air NewZealand. We have the opportunity tosignificantly increase these earnings throughgreater Government investment in theindustry.”Mr Thompson says Air NZ invests tens ofmillions of dollars promoting New Zealandoffshore and in recent years has taken aleadership position in opening up new tourismopportunities, launching direct services intoAdelaide, San Francisco, Shanghai, Vancouverand Beijing, and doubling its capacity toLondon through its Hong Kong service.

“The industry needs additional governmentfunding to boost New Zealand’s profile in keyoffshore markets, expand the scope ofpromotional activities and focus on newemerging markets.”Mr Thompson says the tourism industry iscritical to New Zealand’s economic prosperityand transformation. As the single largestexporter in the New Zealand economy, itcontributes 9% of our GDP and employs onein ten Kiwis. As the national carrier, Air NZ’sfortunes are inextricably connected to thegrowth of the tourism sector. The carrier is receiving world-wide recognitionof its commitment to reducing itsenvironmental impact, and Mr Thompson saysthere should be a heavy focus on promotingour environmental initiatives andcommitments.“New Zealand provides a unique destinationbased on our diverse environment and cleangreen image. Our attractiveness as a touristdestination can only last as long as ourreputation as one of the most environmentallyfriendly nations stays intact. We need acoordinated national approach to theenvironment that enhances our 100% Purepositioning and delivers on our visitors’expectations of one of the cleanest, greenestcountries in the world,” he says.“If New Zealand Inc is to continue to prosper,to grow our exports, to encourage investmentin New Zealand, and to raise our position inthe OECD rankings, then it is vital that wecontinue to market ourselves successfully tothe world.”

Health Tourism AssessedAccording to the ABC, the Australian tourismindustry is looking to take a new direction intohealth and medical tourism after ATEC, theAustralian Tourism Export Council, formed apanel to discuss how to tap into the billion-dollar market. The panel has been formed to conduct risk andcost assessments of introducing health tourismto Australia, which would include beauty andspa treatments, counselling, and surgery.Matthew Hingerty, the panel’s ManagingDirector, said the health tourism market couldreel in more revenue than the boomingeducational tourism market. He added thatexported medical travel from the US alone willbe worth US$162 billion by 2012, as predictedby Deloitte in last week’s edition of TheEconomist.“We believe that we can model thedevelopment of health tourism in the same waythat we have built education tourism into a $10billion annual industry for Australia,” he said.“It’s not so much the more invasive andcatastrophic procedures but those routine

elective procedures that are becomingincreasingly expensive in places like the UnitedStates.”The Gold Coast is expected to reap the biggestbenefits from health tourism in the country.Mr Hingerty says the Gold Coast’sentrepreneurial medical sector would make themost of new opportunities.“We’re looking at having the first annualhealth and wellbeing tourism conferencenext year and the Gold Coast picks itself asthe destination and we are in talks about thatat the moment, so I think the Gold Coaststands to benefit very strongly if Australiagoes into this market in a significant way,”he said.

More Money Pumped into Air Tahiti NuiThe French Polynesia Council of Ministers hasapproved a two billion French Pacific franc(US$25m) current account advance for AirTahiti Nui.This is the second recent cash infusion for thecarrier. The French Polynesia Assembly hadin early August adopted a supplemental budgetfor 2008 that included an XPF1.5-billion(US$19m) recapitalisation for TN.That was Air Tahiti Nui’s 17th recapitalizationduring its ten years of flying and increased thegovernment’s stake in TN from 68.8% to morethan 70%. According to a Tahiti Presse report, the exact amount of that stake will not beknown until after five private investors

represented on the airline’s board decidewhether to preserve their current stakes. The Council of Ministers issued a mediastatement following its special meeting lastThursday saying the government would bepaying particular attention to relaunchingmeasures put in place over the next five months,“which will be decisive for the future of AirTahiti Nui.”
