Due to COVID-19, The Holland Project and independent venues like us nationwide endured significant challenges in 2020. As the oft repeated line goes, “venues were the first to close, and will be the last to reopen” - we know the impact from this time is severe, and that we still have a ways to go. In a typical year, Holland could look back at the production of nearly 300 all ages events in art, music, community gathering, poetry nights, film screenings, artist collaborations, afterschool programs, and much much more all serving over 18,000 participants (our average for several years running) of primarily teens and young adult as well as artists and art/music lovers of all ages in the Truckee Meadows.

This year, as we were forced to close the doors in early March, more than 200 events were canceled or significantly impacted, with an an estimated loss of over $210,000. While these challenges have been unprecedented and immensely difficult for our organization, we also saw opportunity, and perhaps more importantly, great need. It was a time to flex our creativity and resourcefulness, to extend a hand to those in need - students, parents, teachers, artists and musicians who lost their entire livelihoods, our small business partners, and more. We have pivoted a lot in the last nine months – to plenty more education, workshop, speaking and discussion opportunities, virtual exhibitions and music, hybrid in-person/virtual camps and afterschool programs, community radio projects, blog series and publications, and also spending more hours in community aid and volunteer service as a team. It’s been a tremendous year of growth and change and we know the road ahead remains rocky until it is safe to bring back more of the programs we love (events and live music especially!).

Despite an incredibly difficult year, we are proud to share with you our 2020 Wrapped, what we’ve accomplished and the incredible community that makes it all possible. That includes you! Thank you for being by our side during this time and we cannot wait to see you in 2021.A

MUSIC2020 kicked off big in live music with over 33 shows produced at Holland between January and March alone! We had a packed calendar for the coming months of local and touring acts, and with several of those bands being bucket list artists for us, 2020 was proving to become one of our busiest and best music years yet. However, March 9th was the last live show at our venue and the Holland show space continues to be closed pending developments of the COVID crisis.

While losing live music has broken our hearts this year, Holland has pivoted programming to keep bringing music to our audiences and providing real opportunities for musicians to play, teach, and share their work. Through workshops and speaking events, affordable practice space, album recording assistance, as well as a new series of livestream shows titled “Showspace Transmissions”, we aim to keep local music active and accessible through this difficult time.

ARTHP Galleries has remained active throughout 2020 in both our on- and off-site locations as well as in the virtual world. We were excited this year to introduce our “Curator Series”, inviting regional and national artist-curators to conceptualize exhibitions for our venue at 140 Vesta. Valley of the Sun (on display June 24 - Aug 1, with an accompanying book) featured 11 artists with ties to Sun Valley, NV. This exhibition explored place, landscape, and identity with an incredible and personal look into this one-of-a-kind suburb and how it has forever shaped these artists. A Claiming Which Cannot Be Tamed (co-curated by Krystal Ramirez and Alberto Garcia, and on display from Sep 1 to Oct 23), focused on artworks that explore cultural identity through consumer culture, nationhood, and symbolism. A beautiful and important exhibition, at time in which the work and themes were especially impactful.

We launched the “HP Window Gallery”, offering COVID-safe viewing for passersby of large scale works transforming our storefront windows. Currently on view is In Their Hungers, an exhibition by Nevada Arts Council Fellowship recipient Sarah Lillegard. As we adapted to the pandemic and 2020, HP Galleries also began hosting all-virtual exhibitions, which we found successful for presenting ongoing programs such as “Young Blood” and “Between the Lyrics” and an exciting new way to connect our exhibition programming to broader audiences in Nevada and beyond.

WORKSHOPS & EDUCATION2020 presented enormous challenges, but also an opportunity to expand our workshop and education programs; develop alternative tools for meeting needs of teachers and parents; and find new and better ways of serving K-8 participants in addition to our teen and young adult audiences. Highlights include our first-ever virtual workshops, take-home and in-classroom kits for elementary and middle school aged kids, outdoor community printmaking days, K-6 chess club, and smaller workshops with some of our favorite local artists in topics such as natural dye, papermaking, and gardening that got us outdoors and our hands dirty.

Our afterschool arts program for teens, Work in Progress, was also able to return as a hybrid in-person and virtual series of courses in analog photography (in our full functioning pop-up darkroom!), fiber arts, watercolor, and gallery practices with the program being extended into 2021 to accommodate for COVID safety and smaller classes sizes.

COMMUNITYCOLLABORATIONS

The City of Reno distributed CARES Act Funds in December 2020 to four local arts organizations (including The Holland Project) in an effort to provide relief to visual, performing, and literary artists affected by COVID-19. Through an application and panel review process, Holland was able to award $45,000 to over 100 professional artists living and working in Reno, Nevada, providing some much needed relief for a community that was among the hardest hit.

ARTIST RELIEF FUNDING

In April and May, Holland Project teamed up with new partner Communities in Schools to provide care packages for Hug High Schools students. Care packages included fun printed bandanas (with instructions on how to use one as a mask), custom hand sanitizer, activities such as collage and zine making, as well as all the materials one would need to paint, draw, or start a journal, bring some much needed creative relief during the early stages of the crisis.

Our annual music summer camp for youth, Girls Rock Reno (or GRR), returned this year and went totally virtual! GRR provides music instruction in vocals, guitar, bass, and drums to youth of all skill levels, supported by valuable workshops in music history, stage confidence, and much more. The camp strives to promote self-love with programs that foster not only creativity and community-building, but also confidence and empowerment. GRR is organized by a dedicated crew of local professional musicians and was supported by our larger community this year in a huge way through instrument lending, tuition scholarships, and awesome live performances - including a very special virtual visit from Grammy-nominated Phoebe Bridgers.

KWNK 97.7FM RADIO PROGRAMS

VIRTUAL CONNECTIONSThrough our social media and blog, we’ve been able to connect with our community, tell our stories, and gather in totally new ways. Earlier this year, we started several new blog series including – “Homebodies” in which community members show off their personal home art collections and the fun objects they’ve collected through the years; “Origins” busting the myths and telling the tales of early Holland Project; “Local Picks” for community members to shout out their favorite local bands; and the Show and Gallery Archives, highlighting fond memories of past programs. Later, we introduced “Blank on Blank”, a deep dive by a new community member each month of a subject they are passionate about and want to share. Other adapted programs included a virtual Goth Bingo Night, ongoing Community Resource Lists, 5Q’s with artists and makers, and our quarterly Self Love blog series.

Radio played a huge role in Holland’s programming in 2020 as the perfect medium to reach audiences in Reno/Sparks in an accessible and truly community driven way during the pandemic. KWNK Community Radio continues to help us produce “Surf’s Up!”, a playlist show curated by a vast network of musicians and artists from across the US; interviews with local journalists, non-profit workers, and city officials regarding important local issues and ways to get involved; on-air discussions with artists that served as placeholders for our typically in-person gallery receptions; listening parties for our compilation releases; stay-home discos and dance parties; and so much more in 2020 with many more collaborations to come!
