SAINT OF THE WEEK BLESSED MARIE-ROSE DUROCHER

The tenth of eleven children, Eulalie Melanie Durocher was born in Saint-Antoine-sur-Richelieu, Quebec on October 6, 1811. Three of her brothers became priests, and a sister entered religious life. Educated by her grandfather until his death in 1821, Eulalie was then sent to a school run by the Congregation of Saint-Denis-sur-Richelieu. When she was sixteen, she entered another boarding school, this time in Montreal, but poor health prevented her from continuing. When her mother died, Eulalie took care of the family, then worked as secretary and housekeeper for one of her priest brothers. During the early years of the nineteenth century, there was a shortage of both schools and teachers in Quebec. Eager to help, Eulalie first applied to a French congregation intent on doing missionary work in Canada. When the French effort failed to materialize, the Bishop of Montreal promoted a home-grown effort to further Canadian education. With the encouragement of her new spiritual director, Father Pierre-Adrien Telmon, and the bishop, Eulalie Melanie Durocher was instrumental in founding a new religious congregation whose purpose was to educate the young. On February 28, 1844, Durocher took the name of Sister Marie-Rose. At first the new order, the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, taught children in a private home. Their school grew, and they moved to a larger building. By 1849 the sisters had established four convents with schools enrolling 448 students. The curriculum served both French- and English-speaking children. In 1846, Sister Marie-Rose faced opposition from Fr. Charles Chiniquy, who wanted to take control of education in the sisters’ schools. She stood her ground and prevailed. She was known for her holiness, her piety, and her firm but loving guidance. Sister Marie-Rose Durocher died on her thirty-eighth birthday, October 6, 1849. In 1880 Bishop Ignace Bourget of Montreal said of Durocher, “I invoke her aid as a saint for myself, and I hope that the Lord will glorify her before men by having the church award her the honors of the altar.” She was beatified by Pope John Paul II on May 23, 1982. We celebrate her feast day on October 6.

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is offered to those who are discerning a call to learn more about the Catholic faith, as well as any baptized Catholics seeking to receive the sacraments of Eucharist and/or Confirmation. If you are interested in becoming Catholic, have not yet made your Confirmation, or have questions about the Catholic faith; RCIA is the place for you. The RCIA program at Chr ist Our Savior Parish will begin on Tuesday, October 9th at 7 PM. To find out more about the RCIA process, please contact Deacon John @ 330-755-6245.

MARRIED COUPLES: Has your relationship taken a backseat to soccer and football games? Kids are important, but your rela-tionship is more important. Quote from recent couple, "We wanted so much more for us and our kids. There is not a shred of doubt in our minds that going on that one Weekend helped make our home warmer, more loving, and enabled us to be more nurturing to our children." Worldwide Marriage Encoun-ter Weekend: Nov. 9-11 at the Wingate Inn, Streetsboro. Info: 330-305-9963 Apply: GreatMarriagesOhio.org

First Step for Change: Beginning this weekend, Sept. 29/30, our parish will be participating in First Step for Change, a project sponsored by Catholic Charities to collect spare change to assist low-income pregnant women and families with food, formula, clothing, diapers and other items essential to a child’s health, safety and well-being. Each family interested in participating in Frist Step for Change is asked to pick up a baby bottle at the back of the church after Mass. Take a bottle, place it in a common location in your home, and fill it with spare change throughout the month of October. You will be asked to bring your filled bottle to church with you at the end of the month for collection.

Sometimes I see references to the Holy Ghost, but more often I hear about the Holy Spirit. Are these terms interchangeable, or what? Sincerely,

Justa Parishioner

Dear JP (my most faithful correspondent): Today Holy Ghost and Holy Spirit have the same meaning: they are words used to name what is so very much beyond our understanding: the Third Person of the Blessed Trinity. English is a language that derives from Early West Saxon, one of the languages spoken by the Germanic tribes that invaded England in the fifth century, after the Roman occupation ended. The Romans, in fact, abandoned their British settlements in order to defend the city of Rome, which was under attack. That left Britain vulnerable to other invaders. Early West Saxon was a Germanic language, and modern English still has a core of words that are Germanic, words such as house, king, moon, and daughter. Ghost is one of those old words and it means “spirit.” Modern German calls the Holy Spirit Der Heilige Geist. In 1066 the Norman Conquest changed the language spoken by the Anglo-Saxons, what we now call Old English. These new invaders spoke a language derived from Latin that is related to modern French. The Normans gave the English language words such as royal, poultry, and beef. The Catholic Church gave the English language many ecclesiastical terms derived from Latin, still the Church’s official language. And during the Renaissance, the revived interest in Greek and Roman culture led to even more Latin terms finding their way into English. For a long time, Holy Ghost was the common term for the Third Person of the Trinity. However, due to the fact that many people think of a ghost as the spirit of a dead person or a Halloween scary figure, Spirit has become the preferred word. Latin is the Church’s official language, and Holy Spirit in Latin is Spiritus Sanctus, so it sounds just right in English, in my opinion. Still, some of our old hymns (e.g., “Come Holy Ghost”) retain the word “Ghost” largely because the music would have to be revised to fit the two-syllable word “Spirit.” This has been fun, JP. I look forward to your next question. Sincerely,

Miss Behavior
