GOD’S WAYS In the stream of readings during this portion of Ordinary Time one week’s texts can often appear to pick up exactly where the previous week’s concluded. The sentiments expressed in today’s first reading seem to be a direct reaction to the Gospel passage we heard last week. In that Gospel, the landowner pays the same wages to his workers whether they worked for a full day or for only a few minutes. Today Ezekiel gives us the lament, “The LORD’s way is not fair!”(Ezekiel 18:25). These Sundays in Ordinary Time offer us a glimpse into the ways of the Lord. We see how God’s way has the tendency to turn the accepted conventions of the day upside down. Those who always expected that their way to heaven was guaranteed are disappointed. Those who thought they never had a chance are given that chance. Today offers us another opportunity to discover the abundance of God’s mercy and love. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — When the wicked turn away from their wickedness they have committed and do what is right, they shall surely live (Ezekiel 18:25-28). Psalm — Remember your mercies, O Lord (Psalm 25). Second Reading — Consider others as better than yourselves; look not to your own interests, but to the interests of others (Philippians 2:1-11 [1-5]). Gospel — Tax collectors and prostitutes are entering the kingdom of God ahead of you (Matthew 21:28-32). October begins this weekend: in this centennial year of Fatima we are now only two weeks away from the final apparition of our mother Mary. Here in Yuba City we'll commemorate this anniversary with an evening Eucharistic Procession and outdoor Mass. But 100 years ago not only were the three children gathered together; at six months into their encounters with Mary, around 70,000 others joined them on October 13th at the Cova da Iria. In September Mary had shared with the children: "In October I will perform a miracle so that all may believe." Word spread quickly, and many quickly gathered, including many skeptics eager to have the chance to debunk people's credulity. The testimony of these skeptics now provides powerful confirmation of the events of that October day. While the three children saw Mary and heard her share the same message as she had throughout the year--that she's here to bring peace, and peace comes through our praying the rosary--the muddy and rain soaked crowds witnessed the clouds overhead parting and saw the sun plummet toward them, and then begin to dance with luminous colors radiating from it. Now, a century later, we don't see the face of Mary: instead we see a world still rocked by violence and division. In 1917 Mary foretold that if we didn't turn to her, we would experience a second greater world war, and the rise of a Russia which would spread atheism and materialism through the world. While both of these are now recorded in history, at this moment violence and division still dominate us: more than ever we need to listen to what our mother told us. The daily rosary is the cornerstone of Mary's message, but we can also join together as a community in prayer and in confidence. Join us at 5:30 on Friday evening October 13th for our Eucharistic Procession through the streets of our town, praying the rosary for peace. As we celebrate an outdoor Mass afterward in honor of her intervention in our world, we can pray that the culminating part of her message would be fulfilled: "In the end, my Immaculate Heart will triumph."

shared religious experience. We listen and wonder together to the Word of God.

"In this shared religious experience which we, as catechists, are called to live with the children, there is only one true Teacher, who is Christ Himself."
