27th. ANNUAL RlEPORT FOR YEAR ENDED 30th JUNE, 1971

Presented at the Annual General Meeting

    on 21 sf October, 1971

Ladi es a nd Gent lemen:

lL is my pleasure to welcome you to this meet ing, and to p n'senl to you on beha lf of the Board of Director s, this Annua l Report cove ring the activities of the Gosford District Hospital fo r the yea r ended 30th J une, 197 1.

This has been an ext remely di fficult year. As the statis tic.oJ inform-ation provided elsewher e in this report will demonstra te, there is urgent need for expa nsion at the Gosford District Hospit al.

HOS PITAL DEVELOPM ENT The Hospitals Com mission of N.S.W. in the ir wisdom. to mee t

the dema nds of the increaSing population of the Centra l Coast, has au thorised the Board o f Dir(.'C tors ot this Hospita l 10 [onn a P lanning Commi ttee to p lan for an u lti mate 600 bed hospital on the Gosford Dist rict Hospital site.

For many months now thi s Planning Co mmittee has been indus-triously working to this cnd , and have formu lated a timetab le which must be adhered to if the Hospital needs of our area a rc to be s ati sfi ed.

I t is p roposed that sketch plans will be p rov ided !O the Hosp itals Commission of N.S.\\' . by 1971 and that work mg d rawings a nd specifi-cations will be completed during the year of 1972 a nd that tenders will be able to be called in early 1973 and t he b uilding should be able t o be commenced app roximately July 1973.

It would be estimated that the period of construction w ould be two years and the earlies t time that a paticll t could be housed in this new b lock would be the middle part of the year 197;'

V-lith the present d~mands on admission, the Hospital cann o t wail fo r this length of time to clapse without additional accommoda t ion . The presen t 180 beds are totally inadequa te. It is mo re often tha n not that we are attempting to house more thun ISO patients. In our bus ie r periods i t is no t uncommon thai we a re requ ired 10 house up to 200 pa t jent s by means of fo lding streicher beds and placing beds between ceds. The situation has arisen where there is a very close selection of admi~sion cases by both the local medical practitioner an d the Hospital adm itting authori ties, to the extent that many cases needing hospital treatment are not allowed to be admitted. A temporary respite to the overcrowd ing at Gosford District Hospital was the admi tti ng of patients last week to the 34 bed subsidiary hosp ital a t Woy Woy. The bu ilding of this sub-sidiary u nit a t Woy .Woy culm inates many ma ny years of hard work and fund raising by our loyal and devoted body of residents of the Woy Way area.

    7

  • The overcrowding is no t restricted to the ward situation , Patho-logy, Pharmacy, Xray, Administation, are but a few areas that urgently need addi ti onal work space.

The bed capacity of the Gosfcrd Dis tr ict Hospit:tl was inc reased du ring the year from ISO to 180 beds, by the conversion of tile !\llfses Old Home, a t a cos t if $40,000. This conversion was complctl!d by the ma in tenance staff of the Hospital at considerable savings.

The conversion of the Nurses Home to ward S]""l3Ce necessitated the provision of add itional Nurses' accommodat ion 3nd this was pro-dded by means of Lysaiht transportable units. The cost of housing 17 nurses was a little over 530,000.

My Board wis hes to express appreciation to Mr. A. H. J ago, M .LA. Mi nister for Health,

  • With the opening of Woy Woy Subsidiary, my Board appoin ted Sister S. Day to the posit ion of Sub.Matron and Mr. G. Moore Chiet Cler k. These two employees will be responsible to the Matron and Chief Executive Office r respect ively for Nursing and Clerical Admi Distralion of the Woy Woy Subsidiary Hospital.

To the St aff of all sections of the Hospital I offer my thanks for the manner in which t hey performed their duties. My spedal thanks and appreciation to Mat ron Inskip and her nursing team, to the Super-intendent and his Residen t Med ical Staff, a nd a ll departmenta l heads for thei r assistance during a most difficult year, and in pa rticular their help in the openi ng of our Woy Woy Subs idiary Hospita l.
