the church, or the Solemn Entrance, celebrated

What does it mean for the Church, for us, today to be disciples of Jesus the

Lamb of God? It means putting innocence in the place of malice, love

in the place of force, humility in the place of pride, service in the place of

prestige. It is good work! We Christians must do this: put innocence in the place of malice, love in the place of force, humility in the place of pride,

service in the place of prestige. Being disciples of the Lamb means that we must not live like a “city under siege,”

but like a city on a hill, open, welcoming, solidary. It means not

having an attitude of closedness, but proposing the Gospel to everyone,

testifying with our life that following Jesus makes us more free and more

the Apostolic College, the foundation-stone of his Church, the guarantor of its stability in the symbol of the keys and the promise that all his decisions would be ratified in heaven, Christ gave him the power of freedom from error when officially teaching the universal Church. In other words, Peter received the primacy in the Church and the gift of

infallibility in his official teaching on matters of faith and morals. As the Church was to continue long after Peter had died, it was rightly

understood from the beginning that the privileges given to him and which were necessary for the successful mission of the Church, were

given to his lawful successors-the Popes.

Our Lady of Charity MassArchdiocese of Miami

Due to the pandemic, this year's Mass for the feast of Our Lady of

Charity will take place Sept. 8, 2020, at 7 p.m. at St. Michael Church. In

order to comply with social distancing, attendance will be by

invitation only. Tickets will be distributed to parishes, schools and

groups of the archdiocese. The faithful will be able to participate in

the Mass via a livestream.

Living the LiturgyInspiration for the Week

To stand in the presence of God is to stand in the presence of

incomprehensible mystery. We are people of proofs and facts. With

good reason, we are becoming more doubtful of what presents itself to us, as technology makes it easy to

fabricate false images and distort what is actually true. What we think is real

actually may not be. We become skeptical. Does this skepticism affect

our relationship with God? To have faith in God means that we must be

willing to trust in the absence of full knowledge. To know the mind of

God means we would know God himself, and that is impossible. To

acknowledge Jesus as the Christ means we acknowledge that the reality and presence of an incarnate God has a fundamental claim on who we are.

When we name this truth, we participate in a depth of knowledge

that stretches us far beyond the scope of our minds. It brings us to silence, which is the only way to touch our

Very few men have had such an impact on Chris-tianity as St. Augustine.

He was born in AD 354 in North Africa, at that time a strong and dynamic Christian region. His father was a prominent pagan, but his mother, Monica, was a devout Christian. She intended that Augustine be baptized, but in his adolescence he distanced himself from the Church and did not want to be baptized. He stud-ied Latin literature and became a follower of an esoteric philosophy known as Manichaeism.

He had a mistress with whom he lived for fifteen years. She bore him a son, but he later broke off with her while living in Milan, where they had gone because he had been given a teaching position there. He found him-self gradually more attracted to Christianity as he listened to the preaching of St. Ambrose, the bishop of Milan. But he resisted conversion, though his mother prayed persistently for him.

In a book entitled The Confessions, written in his later years as a spir-itual and theological reflection on his life, Augustine describes the final steps to his conversion. He had felt the tension between attachment to his sinful ways and attraction to Christ and the Gospel. One day in the year 386, he went crying into the garden of

the house where he was staying with friends. He was weeping because of his inability to make a decision for conversion. But then he heard the voice of a child from a neighboring house singing the refrain, “Take it and read, take it and read.” He picked up the Letters of St. Paul and read the first passage his eyes fell upon: “not in orgies and drunkenness,not in promiscuity and licentious-ness, not in rivalry and jealousy. But put on the Lord Jesus Christ,and make no provision for the desires of the flesh” (Rom 13:13-14). Augustine recognized the grace of God in this reading and embraced conversion.

He was baptized by St. Ambrose in 387 and returned to North Af-rica in 388. In 391, while visiting the town of Hippo, he was urged by the Christian population to become a priest; he accepted, though reluctantly. In 395 he became bishop of Hippo. As a Christian, priest, and bishop, he

wrote numerous books to explain and defend Christian doctrine. His homilies and sermons werewritten down, and they witness to the depth and power of his preaching. He died in 430.

Augustine knew the damaging ef-fects of sin. In The Confessions, he admits his own sinfulness even as a boy: “Many and many a time I lied to my tutor, my mas-ters, and my parents, because I wanted to play games or watch some futile show or was impa-tient to imitate what I saw on the stage.” But he also experienced the greater power of grace, of God’s enabling us to overcome sin and accept the Gospel of his Son. St. Augustine knew God’s mercy in the forgiveness of sins gained for us by Jesus Christ. Today Catholics encounter this same mercy and forgiveness inthe Sacrament of Penance.

Muy pocos hombres han causado un impacto tan grande en el cris-

tianismo como lo ha hecho San Agustín. Nació en el año 354 d.C. en el norte de África, en esos tiempos una región cristiana muy sólida y dinámica. Su padre era un pagano muy prominente, pero su madre, Mónica, era unadevota cristiana. Ella quería que Agustín fuese bautizado pero él, en su adolescencia, se distanció de la Iglesia y no quiso ser ba-utizado. Estudió literatura latina y se hizo discípulo de una filo-sofía esotérica conocida como maniqueísmo.

Tuvo una concubina con la que vivió quince años. Ella le dio un hijo, pero más tarde él la dejó cuando vivían en Milán, a donde habían ido porque él había reci-bido trabajo como maestro allí. Gradualmente se sintió cada vez más atraído al cristianismo a medida que escuchaba la pred-icación de San Ambrosio, obispo de Milán. Pero Agustín se resistió a convertirse, aunque su madre rezaba persistentemente por él.

En un libro titulado Las Confe-siones, escrito durante sus úl-timos años como una reflexión espiritual y teológica sobre su vida, Agustín describe los pasos finales hacia su conversión. Él había sentido la tensión entre su comportamiento pecaminoso y la atracción a Cristo y el Evangelio. Un día del año 386, salió llorando

Pero entonces es-cuchó la voz de un niño de una casa vecina que cantaba “Toma y lee, toma y lee”. Tomó las Epístolas de San Pablo y leyó el primer pasaje que vio: “Nada de comilonas ni borracheras, nada de lujurias ni desenfreno, nada de pleitos ni envidias. Revístanse más bien, de nuestro Señor Je-sucristo y que el cuidado de su cuerpo no dé ocasión a los malos deseos” (Rm 13:13-14). Agustín reconoció la gracia de Dios en esta lectura y se convirtió.

Fue bautizado en el año 387 por San Ambrosio y regresó al norte de África en el año 388. En el año 391, mientras que visitaba la ciudad de Hipona, la población cristiana lo urgió a que se hiciese sacerdote; Agustín aceptó, aun-que reticentemente. Pero también experi-mentó el poder aún mayor de lagracia de Dios haciéndonos ca-paces de vencer el pecado y aceptar el Evangelio de su Hijo. San Agustín conocía la miseri-cordia de Dios que se encuentra en el perdón de los pecados que Jesucristo ganó para nosotros. Hoy en día, los católicos encuen-tran esta misma misericordia yperdón en el sacramento de la Penitencia.

Saint of the Week

Born in Tagaste in pres-ent-day Algeria, this North African lay woman was given in marriage to Patricius, a Roman pagan. St. Augustine of Hippo, a saint in the mak-ing, was their eldest child. Monica tried to bring him up a Christian but was also con-cerned for his worldly suc-cess and sent him to Carthage to study. Her prayers helped the conversion of both her husband and her mother-in-law to Christ. Her two other children, Navigius and Perpetua, were also known for righteousness, and Perpetua eventually entered religious life. But Augustine,

to Monica’s dismay, joined the heretical Manichean sect. He scorned Christianity and had a son with his mistress. In 383, Monica sought his conversion and followed Augustine to Italy, where she became a follower of St. Ambrose and asked for his intervention with Augustine. Three years later, Augustine was baptized by St. Ambrose. Monica fell ill shortly after and died before their return to Africa. Years before, a bishop had famously coun-seled her, “It is not possible that the son of so many tears should be lost.”

[August 27] we will celebrate the memory of St Monica, Mother of St Augustine. To the inter-cession of these Saints let us entrust Christian newlyweds and parents, that like Monica, they may accompany by example and prayer the journey of their children. Let us commend the sick who are most in need of comfort and constant attention as well as young people that, like Augustine, they may move towards the fullness of Truth and Love, which is Christ: he alone can satisfy the deep needs of the human heart.
