Dean’s Corner

It’s always a great feeling to come to the end of the academic year with a feeling of accomplishment. We pulled together as faculty and staff members to address major budget cuts in a positive manner. I continue to be grateful for President Smart’s commitment to shield the academic colleges as much as possible; that happened because our colleagues in the other units were willing to do more than their fair share. We also made some significant progress in expanding possibilities for offering dual degrees with international partner universities, thanks to the work of Jerry Masterson, Jim Baker, Brad Bodenhausen, and Steve Robinette. We delivered the first course in the MPS in Brazil with our partner Unicesumar University, and we hope to have similar arrangements in Vietnam and China in the next year or so. These partnerships would not be possible without the collaboration and support of our departmental leaders and faculty. At a time when most institutions are experiencing a major drop in international student enrollment, MSU’s remains somewhat stable due to the unique support and programming we provide.I’m excited that our consultant will be with us this summer to start the “Graduate Program Director” project. Benjamin Thomas, who is in his final year of a PhD in Organizational Psychology at the University of Nebraska-Omaha, will be working to define the roles/responsibilities of GPDs, develop training materials, and make recommendations on feasible types of support. I’m counting on you to take the time to respond to surveys he may send or requests for participation in focus groups. Benjamin is an alum of our I/O master’s program, and we hope that his work will be helpful not only on our campus, but on others across the country through collaboration with the Council of Graduate Schools. There are 656 graduate students who have applied for graduation this spring! That brings our grand total to 24,815 students who will have received a graduate degree from MSU. That’s the main reason we do our jobs… what a privilege. I hope you have a restful and productive summer.

Graduate Student Information Access

MissouriStatestudentscannowapplytotheGraduateCollegethroughtheirMyMissouriStateportal.

TheGraduateCollegenowhasitsownchannelontheAcademicstabintheMyMissouriStateportal.ItcontainslotsofusefulitemsforMissouriStatestudents.ThisnewchannelwillappearinMyMissouriStateforcurrentstudentsclassifiedasgraduatestudentsandjuniorswitha3.00GPAandabove.Thelinktotheapplicationfromthischannelcanmakeapplyingforasecondgraduateprogramoraddingagraduatecertificatequickandeasy.WeencourageyoutodirectyourstudentstotheGraduateCollegechannelbothtoapplyforGraduateCertificatesandtoaddanyadditionaldegrees.WeareworkingonaddingaGraduateCollegechannelinWorkResourcesforGraduateProgramDirectorsandGraduateFacultysoon.

Questions From Program Directors 1. What are some of the differences between an International application and a Domestic application?

Generally,internationalapplicantsarerequiredtosubmitpersonaldocumentationwhichisneededforobtainingtheirVISA.

Thesedocumentswillbeviewablebyselectingthe“V”inthedashboard.TheywillbelistedasADMISSIONREQSwithadditionaldescriptionssuchasBANKorFNCL.

Inadditiontothesepersonaldocumentstherecouldverylikelybetheapplicantslettersofrecommendationorapersonalstatement—supportingdocumentsneededtoevaluatetheapplication.Domesticstudentswouldmostlikelysubmitthesedocumentsdirectlytoaprogramdirectorbutinternationalapplicantswillsubmitapacketwhichmightincludealloftheirdocumentswhentheyapply.

Thedashboardwillalsoshowa“C”fortheCredentialEvaluation.TheCredentialEvaluationisanofficialsynopsisoftheapplicant’sinternationaltranscriptthathasbeensubmitted.ThetranscriptinformationhasbeenevaluatedandenteredbyInternationalStudentServices.

Tips for GRADS Dashboard

RecentupdatestoInternetExplorerhavemadeitlesscompatiblewithGRADSDashboard.Atthispoint,wearerecommendingthatGoogleChromebeusedforGRADSDashboard.Itdisplaystranscriptsmoreclearlyandmoreconsistentlyshowstheleftpage/rightpagearrowstocyclebetweentranscriptpages.

2. We have admitted a graduate student but we have not processed her PAF. What do we need to do now that he has been awarded a Graduate Assistantship?

First,youneedtoinitiatetheePAF.Onceithasbeenapproved,InternationalServiceswillsendarevisedI-20.Thestudentwillneedtopaytheexpressmailfee.WorkwithInternationalServicesInternationalServices@missouristate.edutohavetheexpressmailfeepaymentsubmitted.

3. Do I need to wait for the Graduate Assistantship paperwork to be processed all the way through the Graduate College before having these new international students register for classes? I don’t want them to be billed by the university to hold their schedule and then be required to pay the hold amount.

The“ScheduleHold”andpaymentofapreliminaryamountwasinthesystemused before our current Bannersystemandisnolongerhowthatprocessworks.ItwouldbepreferredtohavestudentsthathavebeenofferedaGraduateAssistantship,anditisonetheyplantoaccept,togoaheadandregister.EligibilitywillneedtobedeterminedforthepotentialGraduateAssistantandifthestudenthappenstoberegistered,thatwouldeliminateaduplicationofeffortatalatertime.

Marketing & Recruiting

Asthisspringsemestercomestoaclosetherearestillseveralprojectsweareworkingonasfarasrecruitmentandmarketingareconcerned.

AtthelastGPDmeetingwediscussedtheGraduateProgramCostsproject,anewpagewhichwillappearonyourprogram’swebsiteindicatingtheestimatedtotalcostofyourprogram.Thispagewillprovidethemostcurrentandrelevantcostinformationtoyourprospectivestudents.Wewantthepagetobeeasilyaccessibleandunderstandable.MistyhasemailedalloftheprogramdirectorsanexceltemplatetocompletebyJuly14.SaraClarkandherteaminWeb&NewMediaServiceswillhavethesepagescreatedandlivebyAugust15.Nextyear,MistywillemailalloftheGPDsaremindertoupdatetheirwebpagesaftertheBoardofGovernorshasapprovedanychangestoourtuitionandfees.ThiswillbeinApril2018.TherewillbespecialopenlabsessionsinthespringandsummermonthstoassistGPDswithwebpageedits.

AfewmonthsbackmanyofyoucompletedarecruitmentsurveytoaidintheidentificationofprogramstoworkwithregardingtheIndividualProgramRecruitmentPlan(IPR)and/ortheGREScoresRecruitmentProgram.TheIPRPlanwillconsistoftheGraduateCollegeandtheprogram(s)workingtogetherthroughseveralcomponents:completingaprogramanalysis,creatingstudentpersonasanddevelopingastrategicmarketingandrecruitmentplan.TheIPRPlanwillrequireaprogram/departmentalcost-sharingagreementwiththeGraduateCollegeandwillmorethanlikelyhaveatimecommitmentof6monthstooneyear.

Recent Issues Raised by a Program Coordinator

An applicant’s application is still at ‘I – Incomplete Outstanding Items’ but the applicant has sent their portofolio to the department. Based on what we have seen in the portfolio it has been determined that the applicant does not meet our admission requirements. How can I deny the student because it won’t let me in GRADS Dashboard?

TheGRADSdashboardfollowssequentialstepsforprocessinganapplication.Wewouldrecommendthatyouwaittomakeafinaldecisiononcetheapplicationhasbeenchangedto“S”andhasbeensenttoyouforadecision.Thiswillpreservetheintegrityoftheprocess.

I didn’t receive an email telling me an application was ready for review?

ThesystemisdesignedtoautomaticallysendemailswhenGraduateAdmissionschangesthestatusofanapplicationto‘S–SenttoDepartment’.Ourofficedoesnothaveawaytotracktheseemailstoverifythattheyaresent.Weareveryawarethattherewillbetimeswhenwecannotrelyontechnology.Wecannotstressenoughtheimportanceofregularlycheckingthedashboardforapplicationsatastatus‘S–SenttoDepartment’.Donotwaittoreceiveanemailbecauseitmaynevercome.

TheGREScoresRecruitmentProgramwillalsobeacost-sharinginitiativewhichwillinvolvetheGPDs’identifyingstudentcriteriathroughthecompletionoftheGRESearchTemplateandsubmittingthistoMistytorunaquerythroughETS–GRESearchService.Dependingonthenumberofstudentsthequeryreports,ishowthecostwillbedetermined.TheGraduateCollegewillpaythe$250annualfee.Eachnamepurchasedis$.50.Mistywillworkwiththeprogramonthebestwaytomarketandrecruittothesestudents.

MistyandDr.Mastersonaresortingthroughthesurveyresultsandapplicationandenrollmentnumbers,andwillbecontactingtheselectedprogramsinthenearfuture.
