This final task will mark the end of five years of roadworks and full delivery of a $9 million upgrade to Kennedy Drive from the bridge to the Pacific Motorway. Ancillary works will continue but these will be off the roadway and have little or no impact on traffic flow. Weekdays from Monday 24 October through to 6pm on Monday 7 November, stop/slow flagmen will be giving priority to trucks removing and delivering materials to and from the worksite. Truck movements will begin at 7am each weekday, finishing no later than 6pm each evening. More than 3000 tonne of excavated materials will need to be trucked from the worksite to the nearby Gray Street depot, with trucks forming a continuous loop from 7am to 12 noon each day. Then, from 12.30pm to no later than 6pm, trucks will be bringing in the same amount of asphalt from the manufacturing plant at Burleigh Heads to rebuild the road and that asphalt has to be applied while still hot. Trucks are expected to be arriving every 15–20 minutes. While one lane in each direction will remain open throughout this final upgrade task, motorists who cannot clear the worksite between the bridge and Limosa Road by 7am should expect frequent and long delays. They also can expect to move slowly through the worksite as they will be close to heavy machinery, working to the centreline on the southern half of the road before traffic is switched and the northern lanes are reconstructed. Tomorrow, Wednesday (26 October), will be further congested as the southern lane of the bridge will be closed to allow a repair on the eastern approach. All traffic will move under the direction of stop/slow flagmen on the northern lane outside peak hours from 10am to 2pm. “There’s no easy solution to easing the pain for motorists over the next two weeks except to urge them to use the alternate route via Bilambil and Terranora roads if they cannot travel early and clear the roadworks before 7am,” said Construction Engineer Bob Hanby. “And again, at the end of the day if their commute puts them on Kennedy before 6pm we advise them to go the alternate route.” Voting this Saturday Don’t forget to vote in the Tweed Shire Council Local Government Elections this Saturday (29 October). Polling booths open at 8am and close at 6pm. There are 15 groups of candidates and four individual candidates vying for seven Councillor positions for the 2016-2020 term. Please note there is no vote for the Mayoral position – in the Tweed, the Mayor is selected by the Councillors. All those on the Electoral Roll in the Tweed Shire Local Government area are required to vote and there are penalties for those who fail to do so. If you’re not sure if you are enrolled in Tweed, you can check by going to www.tweed.nsw.gov.au/Elections. The Tweed election is being conducted by the NSW Electoral Commission on Council’s behalf. A Constitutional Referendum will also be held, with voters required to answer yes or no to the following question: “Do you support an increase in the number of Tweed Shire councillors from seven (7) to nine (9)?” If there is majority support, changes will take effect from the 2020 election. It’s double-Dutch at the Tweed Regional GalleryThe Dutch have had an enduring and profound influence on world art throughout the ages.

Now the local Dutch community has made a positive mark for art in the district, with a recent donation to the Tweed Regional Gallery & Margaret Olley Art Centre.

More than 1000 people last month attended a Dutch Australian Festival in Murwillumbah, celebrating 400 years since Dirk Hartog and his ship the Duifke reached Australia’s west coast, the first arrival to the continent by Europeans.

Murwillumbah Anglican Church hosted two days of Dutch music, activities, displays and cuisine, as well as an official opening by Dutch Consul-General Willem Cosijn.

The promise of clogs, windmills, tulips and traditional clocks lured participants from throughout NSW, Queensland and further afield and raised a handsome sum that coordinators were keen to reinvest into the local community.

Its profits were split between the Gallery, Tweed Regional Museum, Tweed Palliative Support and Wedgetail Retreat and the You’ve Got a Friend support group providing meals for homeless and marginalised people.

Festival organisers Frank and Rosemary Gyzemyter last week visited the Gallery to make the donation and were given a guided tour.

Their tour guide, Gallery Director Susi Muddiman OAM, said the donation was a delightful surprise and would go towards acquiring a work by a regional artist.

Mr Gyzemyter, who stepped in to assist festival founder Martien Jansen in de Wal, said the event was so warmly embraced by the local community, organisers wanted to ensure the Tweed benefited from the event’s success.

“The Gallery and Museum are both very important for culture in this area and we’re really happy with can assist them with these donations,” he said.

Long-awaited book launchA long-awaited book about the Tweed Coast’s natural history, compiled by many of the region’s cultural and natural heritage authorities, will be launched at Bogangar’s Les Burger Fields Hall this Saturday.

Specialists in culture, flora, fauna, geology and climate worked with local photographers, artists and graphic designers in a nine-year project to create The Fragile Edge, to define the area’s unique cultural and natural heritage in a way that was visually compelling and easily understood.

A number of Tweed Shire Council staff volunteered their personal time to contribute their knowledge to many sections of the book, which has over 1000 images and a myriad of topics within its more than 400 pages.

“The Fragile Edge will be a great educational tool and Council, through its coastal committee, helped fund the book’s production by pre-ordering copies to place in local schools and libraries, and for our own educational activities,” Council’s Natural Resource Management Co-ordinator, Jane Lofthouse, said.

Speakers and a video at Saturday’s launch, starting at 3pm, will explain the content and making of the book, followed by a sausage sizzle. A significant milestone of the Kingscliff Bridge build was reached last

Thursday as workers placed and fitted the 16 girders that will support the bridge deck. A 130-tonne crane is pictured lifting each of the near 18-tonne girders into place every 20 minutes after they arrive on trucks from the manufacturer in Brisbane. Bridge Gangers Wayne Lack (foreground at right) and Jonathan King (background at right) square off the third girder at each end before signalling to the crane driver to lower it into place. The bridge build is on track to be open to traffic before Christmas.

View from the cloud now at your fingertipsTweed environmental, planning and property information is now available at your fingertips with the re-launch of Council’s smart phone and tablet-friendly mapping applications.

The new cloud-based web mapping tools replace Council’s six-year-old Tweed Maps service and will provide easy to use, 24-hours-a-day access from a phone, tablet or computer.

Improvements have been made to the mapping websites to provide easy access to property information, planning details, flood zones and community services and facilities.

“These interactive mapping tools are really user-friendly and provide practical information for businesses and the community to access quickly and easily,” Council’s Manager, Information Technology, Ken Holdsworth said.

“At present, our customer contact centre fields a significant number of these enquiries by phone, this online service will help residents and businesses access Council resources 24 hours a day.

“This new section of the Council website allows residents, business operators and community groups to view geographic information, find features and points of interest, and print maps.

“Information such as property boundaries and development details, bushfire and flood zones as well as the locations of community parks and amenities, can all be viewed with the click of a button”.

“Planning information such as zoning is also easily accessible, with colour-coded mapping allowing users to view zoning status at a glance.”

The three mapping applications are:• Property Information – property boundaries, imagery and contours,

aerial photography.• Planning – visualise and get information about planning constraints,

bushfire prone land, flooding and also link to environmental data.• Community Services. – public facilities, council parks, schools,

community halls and amenities.Tweed Maps and a step-by-step user guide can be accessed via

www.tweed.nsw.gov.au/mapping Council Asset Management Officer Paul Calvino trialling the re-launched mapping tools that can now be accessed via smart phones and tablets.

Big response to teeny-tiny tweed housesDesign innovation and sustainable living ideas will be in display at an exhibition of entries to a ‘Tiny Homes’ design competition, that can be seen at the Murwillumbah Council Chambers foyer from Monday 24 October – Friday 4 November, from 8.30am to 4pm.

This year’s winner of the $1000 Professional Category on the theme of Tiny Homes: A Pocket Neighbourhood was Neeraja Peeret. Ms Peeret’s winning design featured a pocket neighbourhood that enabled many people to live sustainably in small houses but with private and communal areas for residents to grow food and come together.

The judges were also impressed with a number of student entries, particularly from Kingscliff TAFE.

“It was fantastic to see so much innovation and creativity from our local design students,” Council’s Urban Designer and tiny house competition judge Jonathan Lynch said.

“The entries focused on key housing challenges and issues affecting our region including housing affordability, integration of sustainable and passive design measures and universal design.”

In addition to the exhibition of Tiny House competition entries, Tweed Shire

Council has produced a Tiny House Fact Sheet which steps through some of the key design and planning considerations.

The Sustainable House Day – Tiny Homes Design Competition is a joint project by Tweed Shire Council, Lismore City Council, Byron Shire Council, Ballina Shire Council, The Green Building Centre, Nimbin Neighbourhood & Information Centre, North Coast TAFE, Self-Seed Sustainability and Dorroughby Environment Educational Centre.

Annual exhibition to showcase flora and faunaMany of the region’s treasured plants, animals and landscapes are highlighted in an exhibition of Caldera Art 2016 finalists now on display at the Murwillumbah Visitors Information Centre.

Caldera Art showcases the work of artists concerned about the natural environment and facilitate sales of artwork and associated products to generate revenue for land care projects and artists.

It contributes to public awareness of regional biodiversity values and environmental conservation initiatives by conducting annual touring art exhibitions and events within the region.

Community garden space wantedOrganisers of a community garden in Murwillumbah are looking for a more permanent site and are calling for assistance from the community.

Passionate members of the Murwillumbah Community Garden Group are looking to build on their progress so far by moving to a more permanent location that is closer to the Murwillumbah town centre. Council has been supportive of the initiative and is assisting the group’s efforts to relocate.

“The group is inspired to create a new community gardening space where all interested people are welcome to garden together,” project coordinator Pam O’Connor said.

“Our group is hopefully at the beginning of its own growth spurt – we have started a campaign to attract new members and have begun

identifying potential sites for a new garden.”Group members recently met with

representatives of Council, Northern NSW Local Health District, The Family Centre and the Murwillumbah Community Centre to consider priorities and requirements for a new site.

There are already five community gardens in Tweed Shire, bringing residents together to grow and harvest healthy food, share knowledge about different gardening methods and recycling, help save and protect diverse plants and seeds.

Council’s Sustainability Program Leader, Deb Firestone, said: “Council is excited about this campaign to establish a new space to build community interest and knowledge in gardening and improve community health and wellbeing.”

For more information phone Pam O’Connor on 0401 605 023 or Deb Firestone on (02) 6670 2555.
