When I was little, I ran here and there throughout my town with my little friends. When I

grew older, I roamed about the village alone whenever my head was full of thoughts. I took

walks without any specific destination, whether it was down an alley or a wide road. I was

able to clear my mind and release my stress by simply taking a leisurely stroll. Walking

made me feel lighter and more clear-headed. I felt like I could do anything when I was done.

Maybe thats the reason why I keep leaving my house and taking walks along the road when

I have any sort of trouble. Without a destination in mind, I just keep walking along the road.

By the time I have a heavy feeling in my exhausted legs; all my worries and troubles have

melted away. When I look up, all I can see is an endless blue sky as my problems seem to

float away in the warm breeze.

Absorbed in Nature, Surrounded by Simple Answers

Walking along the Olle Trails always reminds me of my childhood,

wandering around my hometown. While walking, completely

immersed in nature, my body and heart feel reborn and young

again. The sea along the trail looks like it is covering the entire

world and looking down from the oreum(small volcano in the

Jeju dialect) the scenic panoramic view of the primitive forest

falls into my full view. Awestruck by the beauty of the sublime

natural beauty that surrounds me, all my worries seem to

disappear into thin air and new hope arises.

After taking in the gorgeous autumn scenery, I begin walking

again. I reach a part of the trail that has the seas on one side.

The sea is a stunning greenish-blue. This area, full of wonderful

sights, is called Seogwipo Chilshimni-gil. It is considered one

of the best places to visit among the Olle Trails.

Whether I have worries or not, I know that I can find the

answers to all of lifes questions on the road. Along the Olle

Trails, surrounded by gorgeous sights, I begin walking again, in

search of more answers.

Impressions Along the Dynamic Trail

A refugee family smiles brightly in the painting, surrounded by

war, and I wonder what could be making them smile? The work

by painter Lee Joong-Seop arouses my curiosity. Soon, I have a

smile on my face too, as I feel like I have just read the painters

mind. I realize that even in the middle of war, the family smiles

because they have each other despite their uncertain future.

It reminds me of the importance to try and live a dynamic and

fulfilling life, no matter my circumstance.

Leaving the gallery, I suddenly feel hungry. I decide to visit

Seogwipo Maeil Olle Market for a quick bite. I buy some

seasoned spicy chicken for 5000won in the crowded market.

Here I get a true sense of community as the hustle and bustle of

the locals carries on around me while I enjoy my snack.

Returning to the trail, I stride forward calmed by the awakening

I received by taking in the beauty and lesson of Lee Joong-Seops

famous work of art.

Meet the Most Exotic, Most Jeju-like Olle Trail

Jungmun Resort is the largest and the most popular resort on

Jeju Island. Within the resort, there are numerous hotels and

museums, as well as many other interesting sites that attract

visiting tourists year after year. On Jeju however, it is the natural

experience that many people are seeking and most attracted

to. Jeju Island is blessed with magnificent works of nature that

are simply complimented by some man-made facilities. The

natural splendor of Jeju welcomes all who decide to enjoy it, and

especially rewards those who tackle the Olle Trails.

Jusang Jeolli, the naturally splendid cliffs made of basalt,

and Jungmun Saekdal Beach, famous for its swelling waves,

are known for their magnificent scenery. Adding to these, a

wonderful walking trail starting behind the Convention Center

and Gaeggak, are not yet well known to many travelers but

promise a spectacular experience to those who make the effort

to find them. Along the trail, mostly untouched by humans, those

who venture out will be rewarded by the noble beauty.

The huge Baksugijeong Cliffs are another place worth visiting

when in the area. The village behind the cliffs is completely out-

of-the-way, so it kept the residents safe during the Jeju Uprising

that occurred on April 3rd, 1948. Watching the stunning sunset

from this serene village, tears fill my eyes as I realize that I will

have to say goodbye to this beautiful view, as I will be leaving to

hit the road again.

Unique Beaches and Breathtaking Cliffs at Every Turn

You will be overwhelmed by the view as you walk along the

golden sand of Hwasun Golden Sand Beach. At the end of the

beach, you can see cliffs of sedimentary rock. The rock goes

all the way to Yongmeori Beeach, which is designated as a

world geopark by UNESCO. Formed out of the natural piling

of stacked of Sa-am that has been accumulating for millions of

years, the formations of the Yongmeori Cliffs look like a dragons

head diving into the ocean for a dip.

Walking on the trail along the Saegye Coastal Road, I am

amazed by the beautiful view of Hyeongje Islands, which are

surrounded by calm waves from the sea. Soon, grand coastal

cliffs spread out before me. It is Songak Mountain, which has

dozens of man-made caves built by the Japanese army during

their occupation of Korea. Unlike the Yongmeori Cliffs, where I

walked under the cliffs, the trail to Songak Mountain leads me

to the top of the cliffs and amazing views to behold. Walking

along the cliffs naturally helps my mind to clear and my worries

to disappear, especially since I have to focus all my attention on

not missing a single step. Surrounded by the grandeur of nature,

I feel so small, modest, and humble.

The Olle Trails of Jeju present me with a new experience

each time I walk them. Sometimes the trail is dynamic like the

beautiful images of Lee Joong-Seops painting, while other times

the trail feels foreign and exotic. While in the middle of the trail,

I find myself lost in thought amongst the severe beauty of Jejus

natural wonders.

Tip: Which is the most beloved trail among Jeju Olle trails?

So far, a total of 26 walking paths has been completed and open

to visitors. Even though it is not easy to say which of the trails is

the best, for those who want to make the most of a short visit

to Jeju Island, I recommend Olle Route 6, 8, or 10. Each of these

trails has been enjoyed by travelers from all around the world.
