12 火金姑

在台南赤坎有位农夫叫做火旺仔，他的老婆因为生病去世了，留下两个年幼的姐妹，姐姐叫金姑，妹妹叫金珍。

有一天，火旺仔载着稻谷要到城里去卖，姐妹俩就留下来顾家。吃过晚饭后，就坐在门口乘凉等爸爸。金珍伸出小手指头对金姑说：“我们来打赌，要是阿爸今天晚上不回来，明天我们就把外头的稻谷搬进谷仓。” 金姑回答：“ 你力气这么小，搬不动的。”

金珍又说："我一定会赢，要是你输了就要搬稻谷。” 金姑没办法，只好跟她勾勾小指头。

这时邻居阿木叔走来，对金姑说：“你爸爸托我告诉你们，他有些东西还没有卖，今晚赶不回来了。”

妹妹金珍一听，生气地往城里方向跑。金姑赶紧在后面追，可是天太黑了，一下子就看不到妹妹。金姑着急地叫着：“金珍，金珍” 并沿着狭窄的田埂找，走过一条又一条，还是找不到金珍的踪影。四周一片漆黑，金姑好害怕，心想：“要是有盏灯，那就好了！” 突然一不小心，掉到水塘里淹死了。

死掉的金姑，还是担心着妹妹的安危，就变成一群身上有亮光的小虫，在田野、河边、树林里到处寻找她心爱的妹妹。

后来村里的人，就把这种小虫取名为“火金姑”，也就是现在的萤火虫。

There was once a farmer named HuoWang in Chihkan, Tainan, whose wife passed away and left him two young daughters. The two sisters were named GingGu and GingJen.

有一天，火旺仔载着稻谷要到城里去卖，姐妹俩就留下来顾家。

One day, HuoWang carried rice to sell in the city market. He left the two sisters at home.

吃过晚饭后，就坐在门口乘凉等爸爸。金珍伸出小手指头对金姑说：“我们来打赌，要是阿爸今天晚上不回来，明天我们就把外头的稻谷搬进谷仓。”

After dinner, the two sat at the front door waiting for their daddy. GinJen made a bet with her elder sister, saying, “I will move all the rice into the barn if daddy doesn’t come back tonight.”

金姑回答：“ 你力气这么小，搬不动的。”金珍又说："我一定会赢，要是你输了就要搬稻谷。”金姑没办法，只好跟她勾勾小指头。

GingCu said to her, “You are too young to move anything!” GingJen said, “I will definitely win. If you lose, you will be the one who moves the rice to the barn!” GingGu knew how stubborn her sister was, so she said, “Okay, I accept your bet.”

这时邻居阿木叔走来，对金姑说：“你爸爸托我告诉你们，他有些东西还没有卖，今晚赶不回来了。” 妹妹金珍一听，生气地往城里方向跑。

At this moment, their neighbor Uncle AMu walked to them and said to GingGu, “Your dad told me in the market that he needed to stay for a while in the city to sell more products. He cannot make it home tonight.” When the younger sister learned that her daddy was not coming back that night, she was very mad. She ran into the city to find her dad.

金姑赶紧在后面追，可是天太黑了，一下子就看不到妹妹。金姑着急地叫着：“金珍，金珍” 并沿着狭窄的田埂找，走过一条又一条，还是找不到金珍的踪影。

GingGu followed her closely. But it was too dark to see far ahead. She lost sight of her younger sister. GingGu was very nervous and she yelled, “GingJen, where are you?” She did her best to locate her little sister on the narrow paths of the rice fields. Even though she searched everywhere, she couldn’t see where her sister was.

四周一片漆黑，金姑好害怕，心想：“要是有盏灯，那就好了！” 突然一不小心，掉到水塘里淹死了。

It was all dark now, and GingGu was very frightened. She thought to herself, “It would be so nice if there were some lights in here!” As she was thinking this, she lost her balance and fell. She fell into a pond in the field and quickly drowned.

Even after she died, she still worried about her little sister. She turned herself into a lightning bug and kept searching for her missing sister on the fields along the river and in the woods.

Later on, the villagers named the bug, “Fiery GingGu.” These are the fireflies we see today.
