TV Scheduling notes
Q1, the schedule for each day can be broke up into clear segments.
How would you categorise these segments?
Time Segment Audience
6am-9am Breakfast Television Working Class, People in
education.
9am-3pm Daytime Television Unemployed, ill people,
retired and the elderly,
housewives, people
who work nights.
3pm-7pm Family Afternoon
Television
Everyone. This is when
TV is most watched
because its appropriate
for almost everyone.
7pm-11pm Prime Time Television Adults, working class,
retired, unemployed
etc.
11pm-6am Night Time Television Students, people
working very long
hours.

Q3, who is the target audience of each terrestrial channel?
Give examples of scheduled programs to
support your views.
BBC 1 is the main channel, it was the first channel created
and it is paid for by television licensing. This channel along
with ITV have the biggest target audience of all the main
channels, this is because they cater for every audience,
meaning there target audience is everyone. A prime
example of them doing this is doctor who, this can be appealing to families
because its lack of violence, teenagers because of the story behind it all and
overall everyone can watch it and enjoy it, without changing the channel or
being offended.
BBC 2 is the brother channel to BBC1, however it features
more cultural programmes and documentaries. With this it
therefore attracts typically, an older audience. They cater
to this by making all their programmes very formal and
making sure they are relative to older peoples interests, for
example Antiques roadshow.
ITV 1 is the main competitor to BBC1 and is an
independent channel, meaning its funded by
advert revenue and investment. This channels
audience is very similar to BBC1s, they have a
range of programs that target everyone, meaning
they overall also target everyone. It differentiates
in a way from bbc in that it shows what people want to watch and what gets
the highest ratings, making it the more popular channel.
Channel 4 is different from the other channel mostly, but it
still does cater for all ages. It mainly focuses its content at
teens and above though, the channel aims to challenge the
typical convention of television. They show content
exported from other countries and often edgy
documentaries and dramas to push the boundaries and gain
a lot of attention doing so.

Channel 5 is the least popular of all the channels in
my opinion because it usually shows programs that
have previously been elsewhere, such as bigbrother. It again targets everyone but just doesnt
succeed at doing so like all the others, this is due
to poor ratings and therefore not enough funding
to produce high quality programs. However
sometimes they do have highly popular exports
such as The Walking Dead and Under the Dome.
