the pipeline industry world wide, not just in accuracy, quality, speed and safety but

also at a lower cost to the customers where in the same time millions of dollars

HOW THE DOG NOSE WORKS

• The canine olfactory system: - Soft tissue - Bones - Nerves - Parts of the brain

• The soft tissue and bony structures make up the cavities into which odor particles flow. These cavities are lined with scent receptor cells which connect to olfactory nerves that connect with the olfactory lobe of the dog's brain.

• Dogs have large folds of mucous membranes inside their nose containing more than 200 million scent receptors compared to smaller areas of mucous membranes containing about 4 million in humans. Their olfactory bulbs are also about 4 times larger than ours.Their noses are also uniquely designed to draw air samples through — They even can smell a few parts per billion. Where the most sofisticated equipment can only measure parts per Million.

Short-wire circuit detection

• Short-wire circuits are extremely difficult to find, there they usually laying underneath pavements, tiles, hardened surfaces or concrete.

• The depth of the cable is on average between 80 cm and 1,5 meter, the local shorting stays local and does not come to the surface.

• The dog has to smell this shorting through street tiles, one meter under the ground

• The greatest benefit is in the fact that no housing connections have to be cut, this results in huge time saving for the customers

Joulz engaged in a specialized company that offers at possible solution here. In a first experiment, they showed that sniffer dogs are astonishingly good at pointing out accurate in decimeters some of the strangest fault locations. Scent of a short circuit The dogs and their companions are employed at The Sniffers, a Belgian company worldwide known in the oil and petrochemical industry in detecting leaks in piping and pipelines. Since last year, the company is also active in detecting short circuits in underground electricity grids using sniffer dogs. The dogs are specially trained to the smell of certain substances released during a short circuit and simmer disturbances. They can smell that, even covered by a thick layer of soil and pavement. CASE STUDY 4 – “TS-Westgas-Infractor” 200km underground Propene pipelines from Dormagegn to Gelsenkirchen

• Two specialized dog handlers have finished this project

in 3 weeks. Logistics was provided by Westgas • One person from Westgas was our guide, he walked al

the time in frond of us with a touchscreen with GPS coordinates of the pipe line.

• 70 % of this project was through cornfields of 2 meters high.
