Tribal Member Cherie Chivis co-facilitates the class and instructs classmates with craft instructions.

Tribal Natives near and far travel each week to support one another at the Access to Recovery (ATR) Crafting and Talking Circle. This class is held every Wednesday from 1 to 3 p.m. at 311 State Street in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and provides a safe and relaxing learning environment to assist individuals undergoing the recovery process. Many in recovery from NHBP gather for these weekly meetings, as well as members from neighboring Tribes. The Talking Circle is a circle of trust, a safe space and a place of healing.

“This class is a wonderful part of recovery and is a healthy distraction from the chaos of the world,” said Behavioral Health Case Manager Jonathan Rinehart, who is also a Tribal Member of the Little Traverse Bay Band of Odawa Indians. “It helps attendees develop patience and gain self-confidence upon completion of projects.”

Tribal Member Linda Mandoka threads her needle. Tribal Member Justin Hendrix adds another bead to his earring craft.

ATR is started Mno-Bmadzewen (in a good way) by Smudging and introducing one’s self. NHBP provided an assortment of beads and supplies for all, as one class specifically focused on flat beadwork to create a set of earrings. Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians Tribal Member Joe Cadreau and NHBP Tribal Member Cherie Chivis lead the class in their beadwork while Rinehart led discussion.

“Flat beading is my favorite craft,” Tribal Member Cherie Chivis said.

Some attendees focus on the craft at hand to create a finished product that assists in boosting their confidence. Others were more

“It’s relaxing and fun to learn beadwork,” Tribal Member Linda Mandoka said. “I also want to thank NHBP for providing us with this opportunity.”

ATR brought up many topics such as wisdom, knowledge, guidance and direction. The idea behind this talking circle is to heal yourself first, then heal your family, next heal your community to ultimately heal your Nation.

“It is important to set boundaries, issues arise when we begin caring for others and neglecting ourselves,” Rinehart said. “Be humble enough to ask for help when you need it and put yourself first.”

heavily drawn toward expressing themselves and their thoughts in the discussion portion of the class.

As each attendee settled into their crafts, a discussion began about goals they had achieved. Attendees set new goals to fulfill throughout the week, and also reviewed trials and tribulations they faced along the way. Rinehart utilized a daily mediation from Coyhis Publishing called Meditations with Native American Elders, to evoke attendees to process thoughts, feelings, and emotions about their own recovery process. In addition, the meditation inspires new ways of thinking for the participants.

Recently, NHBP and FireKeepers Casino Hotel (FKCH) announced payments to the state of Michigan and the Local Revenue Sharing Board (LRSB), and the payments mark contribution records for three years straight. The money contributed totaled over $23.7 million to the state of Michigan and the LRSB.

The payment to the state of Michigan totaled more than $18.1 million, an increase of 5.84 percent over the 2017 payment, while the payment to the LRSB was over $5.6 million, an increase of 4.62 percent, which surpassed the 2017 amount. This brings the total contribution NHBP has given to state to over $125.2 million and $43.2 million to the LRSB, with a combined contribution which totals $168,473,743 since FKCH opened in August 2009.

“The leadership and Tribal Members of the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi are proud to honor our agreements and create a positive impact to the State of Michigan and our Local Revenue Sharing Board and we are pleased with the growth displayed at FireKeepers Casino Hotel,” Tribal Council Chairperson Jamie Stuck said. “The great performance of our FireKeepers team has created new jobs in 2017 and a destination resort that attracts guests from across Michigan plus large sections of Indiana, Ohio and Illinois. The creation of great guest experiences creates a loyalty factor that has been the foundation of our substantial revenue growth to support needs in our local communities.”

NHBP has made concentrated efforts to focus FKCH on supporting local businesses and suppliers and extend

contributions to the local economy beyond both the LRSB and the distribution to the state. The Tribe’s commitment to local spending resulted in awarding contracts in an excess of $41.4 million within the state of Michigan in 2017.

The LRSB distributions have benefited a diverse array of groups, including Harper Creek Community Schools, Calhoun County Road Commission, Emmett Township, Calhoun County, Calhoun Intermediate School District, Kellogg Community College, Willard Library, Athens Township, Marshall Township, City of Marshall, City of Battle Creek, Athens Area Schools, Village of Athens, Battle Creek Public Schools, Marshall Public Schools, Lakeview School District and Pennfield Schools.

FKCH was recently named a Four Diamond Hotel by AAA, which is a premier honor in the hospitality industry. This year’s recognition marks the fourth year in a row in which FKCH has received this award, which they were first honored with inin 2015.

A Four Diamond Hotel is refined and stylish, while providing guests with an upscale atmosphere along with amenities for any occasion. All hotel guests have access to the various

amenities, including a luxurious multilevel pool, steam room, sauna, exercise room, business center, as well as high speed Wi-Fi, dry cleaning and laundry services.

“This award is a reflection of all of our team members’ hard work ensuring every guest has a fun, friendly, vibrant and upscale experience from the moment they arrive on the property,” Vice President of Hotel Operations Mike Criswell said.

“Our guests deserve nothing but the best, and we are fully prepared to exceed expectations.”

AAA Inspections have been happening for over a three-quarters of a century with assessments conducted by professional inspectors. These inspections are anonymous, in-person property evaluations, which makes AAA the only company to use comprehensive on-site evaluations.

All 119 participants were entered into three separate competitions, in hopes of bringing home the top prize. The first competition was an overall percentage of weight lost, the second was the most classes attended during the program and

the final was the highest number of overall points in the competition. Throughout the competition, participants could receive points by attending fitness classes, stress management classes and by filling out weekly goals with an action plan to complete their individual goals.

The HHSD offered plenty of classes in Grand Haven, Grand Rapids and at the Pine Creek Indian Reservation to allow everyone a fair chance at attending classes and receiving points. Some of the classes offered included Kickboxing, Zumba, Yoga, Cardio Drumming, PiYo and RELAX. Each fitness activity was offered at various times throughout the week, with instructors from the HHSD, local YMCAs and even NHBP employees.

“The cardiovascular workout burns off stress,” said NHBP Behavioral Health Case Manager Jonathan Rinehart. “It is a wonderful form of self-care.”

At the RELAX activities, participants walked through a variety of stress reducing techniques. Some of these included meditation, AcuDetox and stretching activities. Behavioral health experts encouraged all to practice meditation three times a week, three minutes at a time, in order to create a healthy and mindful habit. AcuDetox is an acupuncture technique that uses small needles inserted into pressure points to relieve stress and create a calming atmosphere for the participants.

NHBP hosted the Second Annual Elders Dance March 3, at the Grand Rapids Community Center. The dance was hosted by Tony Reynolds, an entertainer who performed a variety of classic songs from artists like the classic singer Marvin Gaye. Elders enjoyed their night with Reynolds as he entertained and played trivia with the group.

Many Elders traveled from the Grand Rapids area, including Tribal Members from NHBP, the Match-e-be-nash-she-wish Band of Pottawatomi Indians (Gun Lake Tribe) and Pokagon Band of Potawatomi. NHBP aimed to put smiles on the faces of all attendees and the Elders especially enjoyed a night of dancing, singing along with Reynolds and conversing with friends – both new and old.

Elders Visit Shipshewana on the Road

The Elders of the Nottawaseppi Huron Band of the Potawatomi visited Shipshewana on the Road in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Shipshewana on the Road is a large indoor gift, food and craft show full of a variety of vendors. The Elders spent Saturday morning shopping and walking around the massive indoor flea market. Some of the items for sale during the day included popcorn, parkas, blankets, salsa, hot sauce, coffee, socks and an abundance of craft items.

After the Elders spent the morning shopping, they enjoyed lunch at Sakura Japanese Hibachi Steakhouse. This restaurant features Japanese food and sushi. The Elders were a little apprehensive at first, for some of the Elders it was their first time trying sushi. The chefs prepared a delicious meal and put on a show for all the Elders to enjoy.

Traditional lifeways of

the community Blessing of the Maples and Sugar Bushing

The Blessing of the Maples ceremony in late February kicked off one of many seasons of celebrating Native tradition for Tribal

Members on the Pine Creek Indian Reservation. After the emergence of the winter moons, the sap starts to flow through the Maple Trees with a ceremony to commemorate the efforts of the traditional and sacred ways of life.

Dozens of NHBP Tribal Members, members of other federally-recognized Tribes, employees and Community members gathered around the Grandfather and Grandmother Maple Trees to honor this traditional way of life.

“The Blessing of the Maples ceremony signifies giving thanks to the Creator for the sap from the Maple Tree, which provides food and nutrition for our Tribe,” said Tribal Member Angie Chivis, who also is the Environmental Office Manager. “The Maple Tree symbolizes generosity, balance and promise to the Native community. It is also a symbol of permanence and longevity.”

Preceding the blessing, Environmental Director John Rodwan drilled a hole into the Grandfather Maple Tree and invited Chivis to hang the first ceremonial bucket. After the bucket was hung, the Environmental Department sponsored a traditional meal, made by Tribal Membership and the Culture Department.

As spring time approached, the Environmental Department and Culture Department began working together to harvest Maple Syrup. This meant buckets had to be placed, sometimes a few to a tree, on nearly 100 maple trees. Many of these trees were smaller, and were only able to hold one bucket, limiting the amount of the delicious Maple Syrup the department was able to produce.

Tribal Membership and the Environmental Department partnered together with the entire NHBP Community to collect the sap, and were lucky to gather three collections this year. Nearly 1,400 gallons of sap was collected, which will make around 35 gallons available at the Environmental Center.

“It is all about doing things the old way,” Tribal Member Kevin Harris Sr. said. “The open Fire is the old way of doing things, so it’s good to keep going for the next generation. Parents need to share this information with their kids, so they can continue to carry on our traditions.”

There are two different types of boils that takes place at the Environmental Center. The traditional boil is done in a cast iron kettle. This is typically done over an open Fire and used for cultural Medicines.

The Sugar Shack offers a conventional boil, which is a practice used to make Maple Syrup in large quantities, is cleaned daily and is officially inspected for compliance with commercial kitchen standards.

“We do this tradition to teach our youth about our culture,” Tribal Member Devonne Harris said. “The traditional boil is about discipline. The delicacy at the end of the night when you have raw maple syrup and sugar makes it worth the wait.”

In order to continue this traditional way of life for future generations, the Environmental Department will continue to plant new maple trees each year on the Pine Creek Indian Reservation. Tribal Council also gave Maple Trees to all Tribal Members who attended the Annual Membership Meeting, to represent the 5-Year Strategic Plan and signify the strength and promise of the Tribe.

“This process is a tradition for the Tribe, but more importantly it’s a lifeway,” Rodwan said. “It is a core value for the Tribe, it is the first food of the spring. This was the first food for the first people, and we want to honor that.”

HEALTHY START PLAY DATE LEARNS ABOUT SUGAR BUSHINGSWEET TREATS AND HAPPY EATS

The Healthy Start Play Date group started their March outing at the Pine Creek Community Center, where the children played and colored pictures, waiting in anticipation to taste test the delicious Maple Syrup at the Environmental Center. Lunch was provided before participants bundled up and loaded into the bus to take them to the NHBP Environmental Center.

At the Center, the children and their parents gathered around a small maple tree and viewed

a branch with a sap drip that had frozen to the branch. The kids then moved to learn about the traditional birch buckets that hang on the maple trees, which is used to collect the dripping sap.

“A long time ago, our people had to dig out bowls to collect the sap,” Tribal Member Kevin Harris Sr. said. “Often it was a birch bark basket or bowl, and we had to work to carve it out in order to collect sap.”

Tribal Member Nakota Norman hooks a bucket on a Maple Tree, while Tribal Member Nova Phillips watches.

Tribal Member Aurora Ansley takes a sip of the sweet Maple Syrup.

The children then made their way to the traditional boil, to watch the kettle boil over an open flame. Harris and his son, Tribal Member Devonne Harris, were tending the fire needed to make the traditional syrup. Everyone listened attentively as Harris Sr. and Tribal Member Drew Phillips discussed what the traditional boil and syrup process is all about, and why the NHBP Community works to revitalize this tradition.

The group then moved into the warm Sugar Shack, where the conventional boil takes place. Participants were able to taste the sweet Maple Syrup and see it boiling here, as well. Once taste testing was done, the kids piled back onto the bus.

“I really like Maple Syrup and already want to drink more,” Tribal Member Nova Phillips said, as she was leaving the Sugar Shack.

Fazolis. The menu included a balance of healthy and tasty, including pastas, chicken, salads and breadsticks. The sweet treat for the night was a yogurt bar, with fruit and granola to go right on top.

After the meal, children went back to running around through various rooms with each other. The night then transitioned into a hands-on activity. Community Health Nurses Dawn Cordero-Reyes and Robin Twiest

handed out chef hats for all the kids to put on before they started making their creations.

Attendees gathered around the tables, and one by one, they measured and stirred the ingredients together to make the granola. Many young children needed the help of their parents or older siblings when it came to getting the correct amount. The granola was sweetened with all natural Maple Syrup.

Tribal Member Javier Chich helps his sister, Tribal Member Nakota Norman.

“I really liked making the granola with Kota,” Tribal Member Javier Chich said. “My favorite things to add were the blueberries, cherries and Maple Syrup, because that makes it sweet.”

The parents then were able to take the granola home to bake, as well as a few baking tools to help them make creations in the future. Children then turned their attention to Twiest, who shared important information about eating right and vegetables. Children shouted out the answers if they knew the vegetables she was pointing to. As the night dwindled down, the participants were given some goodies, books and baking supplies to go.

Tribal Member Sequoia Butler smiles as she makes granola.

As a member of the elected Tribal Council, she served as chairperson for the Culture Committee and the Elders Committee. She also served on the Michigan Community Service Commission following her appointment by Governor Rick Snyder in 2015. Christine was devoted to her family first, but also dedicated to her Tribe and the employees of the Tribal government and FireKeepers Casino Hotel, all of whom she regarded as family.

Christine is survived by her husband of 35 years, Rodney Alan Lanning of Newaygo, Michigan; Daughter, Sara (Brad) Moore; Son, Scott Lanning; Sister, Rose (Joel) TePastte; Brother, Russell Chivis; Grandson, Liam Moore; Childhood Lifelong Friends, Mel, Holly, Cathie and Denise, and special recognition to the Italian and Native families of Christine. She enjoyed swimming, boating, fishing, reading, music, playing board games, art, painting, connecting with friends and making precious memories with her family. Christine enjoyed dance, and enjoyed teaching others to dance, which she did for many years. She especially loved spending time with her grandson, Liam, who shares her infectious smile. She was the heart of her family, and loved cooking and surrounding herself with her family. Christine genuinely cared about people. Her deep affection and appreciation was evident in her genuine smile and her famous hugs.

Christine had a special passion for her work to prevent domestic violence and to support and care for its survivors. She was a member of the board of directors for S.A.F.E Place Women’s Shelter, for which she was a tireless fundraiser and frequent volunteer.
