Turkiye is a project of Ataturk• Ottoman Empire who ruled over for 600 years has been

transformed into the Republic of Turkey miraculously just in 6years.

• Ataturk (father of Turks) denied WWI’s results and started theWar of Independence. From 1914 to 1920 he established anew country from scratch.

Founder of TurkiyeAtaturk is internationally known as an outstanding statesman, soldier, commander, reformer, and nation-builder who introducedmany reforms with the aim of founding a new secular democratic and modern republic after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire.

Turkiye & Australia

First encounter in thehistory was at Gallipoli in1915. The naval war was avictory for OttomanEmpire and therefore aninfantry war planned byGreat Britain.

ANZACs vs Turks• Ataturk was the commander at Gallipoli and he did

not see the result of the war as a victory, because hebelieved that at war everybody lost.

• He made the following declaration, which appears onthe Ataturk Memorial, Canberra. “Those heroes thatshed their blood and lost their lives… You are nowlying in the soil of a friendly country, therefore rest inpeace. You, the mothers, who sent their sons fromfaraway countries wipe away your tears; your sonsare now lying in our bosom and are in peace. Afterhaving lost their lives on this land. They have becomeour sons as well.”

An Ideal: Independence

• Ataturk organised the public against theOttoman Sultan, who was manipulated by theinvader countries, and started a war.

• At the end of a 6 years period of war hedeclared the dissolution of the OttomanEmpire and announced the Republic as thenew regym and established the NationalParliament in 1920.

Today

• Turkiye’s population is about 70 million and iscurrently the 17th biggest economy. The surfacearea is 775,000 sq km, which is 1/10 of Australia.

• Australia and Turkiye have a productive and steadilydeveloping relationship, with substantial dialogueacross a wide range of issues, frequent high-levelvisits and expanding bilateral trade and investment.Australia’s imports from Turkiye are dominated driedfruits, nuts and cargo vehicles. Turkiye imports cattle,coal and lead from Australia.

• In 1967, Turkiye and Australia signed a bilateralagreement on assisted migration. There are 200,000Turkish origin citizens in Australia.
