Charlottesville resident Michael Kaminski had been watch-ing the news around the nation this year, and he was both-ered by the negative tone on policing. “I wanted to do something to show my gratitude for all that the local law officers do.” So with the help of his business partner at Merrill Lynch, Jorgen Vik, they hatched a plan to donate a turkey to each CPD officer for Thanksgiving.

Working with Reid Super Save-Mart, the CPF arranged for all 115 officers to come into the grocery store to pick out a free turkey to enjoy with their families.

Officers say this act of kindness is very much appreciated. Being recognized by community mem-bers for the difficult work that law enforcement undertakes each and every day goes a long way.

This summer the CPF collaborated with the Albemarle County Police Foundation to sponsor the first-ever joint police depart-ment Family Pool Day at ACAC Waterpark. Families from both the CPD and ACPD met on a beautiful sunny day in August to enjoy casual time together. Police supporter, Allen Powell, cooked up a feast of chicken and ribs along with delicious sides for all to enjoy. Sgt Steve Knick played some tunes while

officers and their families swam, played cornhole, and enjoyed basketball together. A big thank you to ACAC for donating their space to make this special day happen.

In other tasty news, the CPF funded another new project for the CPD this summer… Ice Cream With a Cop! Partnering with a locally owned ice cream truck, Mobile Delicious, we invited local kids and families to 6 different parks around Charlottesville from July through September to enjoy a cold treat on us.

Charlottesville Police Officers were at the parks to meet with the public, enjoy the park and have some ice cream with whoever wished to join in the fun. During this time together, both adults and children engaged in conversation with our officers and discussed whatever issues they feel are important.

Last month, the CPF hosted the Charlottesville Police Department’s annual Awards Dinner. We asked the community to “Treat a Cop to Dinner” as well as send a “Message of Thanks” to the police. The quotes above are just a sample of the messages that we received. Officers and their families not only enjoyed a special night out, a delicious meal, fabulous raffle and door prizes, but felt the support and gratitude from community members and businesses. Former United States Attorney for the Western District of Virginia, Tim Heaphy, also made a special appearance at the dinner to honor Chief Longo for his work on the Hannah Graham search last year.

Throughout the evening, Chief Longo recognized the outstanding contributions and efforts of our city’s finest. He shared stories of officers going above and beyond the call of duty in heroic ways. Awards were given to more than two dozen recipients for awe-inspiring police work, in-cluding:

The two years of work performed by the JADE Task Force to investigate and dismantle a drug and firearms traffick-ing group in our area.

Two officers who climbed on shoulders to reach a disabled blind woman trapped on the third floor of a burning building, thus saving her life until the fire department arrived.

An officer who encountered a suicidal woman on a bridge and was able to counsel her to safety.

Prior to rescue squad arrival, an officer’s persistent CPR on a woman in cardiac arrest, thereby saving her life.

The care and attention an officer took with an elderly man who he suspected had become the victim of a scam.

We appreciate all the friends and sponsors who helped support this event and said “thank you” to the men and women who work tirelessly to protect our community and help create a safe place for individuals and businesses to reside and flourish.

Here’s what else is going on at the CPF:

Ran a Community Leadership Police Academy for Charlottesville City Council members, neighborhood as-sociation presidents, and local members of the press. Attendees got an insiders look into the Department over two evenings of classes.

Welcomed 6 new officers to the Department with a dinner following their Academy graduation.

Funded three $20K Housing grants for officers this year. The community, Department, and families of the officers all benefit from having the police live where they work.

Sponsored two Sergeants in continuing education programs. One attend-ed a Command College in Richmond while another attended an Execu-tive Leadership school in Texas. The leadership and knowledge they gained from these classes benefits the entire Department.

Partnered with the Albemarle County Police Foundation to sponsor a working lunch while both Departments were receiving training on Do-mestic Violence.

Graduated 15 participants from the 11 week Citizens Police Academy.

Fostering a Great Relationship

Charlottesville Police Officers continue to serve our community even when

their shifts end and they hang up their uniforms. Take Sgt Robert Haney as

an example. Haney was the big winner in the raffle at the Awards Dinner

of the President’s box suite for a UVA women’s basketball game. But in-

stead of only inviting his friends and family, he reached out to the Boys &

Girls Club to invite kids from the club to join him.

In Haney’s words to the B&GC, “You all do so much for our youth, and

you are always willing to assist [the CPD] in any capacity. Please accept

this small token of appreciation from me and the CPD, as we truly cher-

ish the relationship we have with you all.”

Through Sgt Haney’s generosity and leadership, these kids were able to

enjoy a night of great basketball as they spent time with a terrific police

officer. Thank you Sgt Haney and the Boys & Girls Club!

The CPF seeks to improve the quality of life in Char-lottesville by offering a community partner for our

police department. The Foundation promotes excel-lence in police services by investing in programs that

enhance our department and yet are beyond the reasonable reach of the City’s budget. We reward

excellence by celebrating the successes of our depart-ment and the skills of its officers. And we strengthen

the connections between the department and the public through outreach programs and community

events.
