DE GENERE TURBINICARPUS F. BUXB. ET BACKEB. (CACTACEA)

A. B. Doweld, National Institute of Catpology (Gaertnerian Institution), Moscow, Russia

The species delimitation in the genus Turbinicarpus remains mostly unresolved, although extensive field and

morphological data have been provided (Anderson, 1986). The creation of a distinct genus Kadenicarpus Doweld

(1998) to accommodate anomalous southern species, T pseudomacrochele (Backeb.) F. Buxb. & Backeb .. ques-

tions the taxonomic position of another southern species, T laui Glass & Foster, which has a similar type of gross

seed morphology anp spination (cf Anderson. 1986: 22). However, the fine structure of its seed cuticular coats is

reported by Glass and Foster (1977) as papillate and radially-striate (cf fig. 45 in Glass & Foster, I. e.). Such a type

of cuticular sculpturing is similar to that of sect. Normanbokea (T. valdezianus. T pseudopectinatus), and is differ-

ent from that in sect. Turbinicarpus. The somewhat structure of the seed cuticular sculpturing is noticed within the

genus Gymnocactus treated as a distinct sister generic entity. A detailed seed morphological and taxonomic survey

would be presented elsewhere.

The species, T pailanus Halda & Panarotto, on the basis of quite another seed-coat morphology has been

placed into Neol/oydia. This is an additional step in the amplification of the genus Neo//oydia (Doweld, 1999,2000).

The species of the genus are re-classified as follows (genera Bravocactus Doweld (1998), Kadenicarpus

Doweld (1998) and Gymnocactus Backeb. (1938) are accepted as distinct):
