TURBAN NOT A SYMBOL BUT ARTICLE OF FAITH

According to Sikh philosophy The Man who is conceived in Sikh Scriptures as a man with hair and turban on his head-“sabat-surat dastaar sirra: Complete Man with hair, beard and turban on his head.”

All The Sikh Gurus kept hair and beard, and all the Sikh Gurus and Apostles wore turbans.,

Guru Gobind Singh created the khalsa panth on the Baisakhi day (30 March) of A.D. 1699. At that time the Khalsa was also instructed to ever wear the turban for the proper upkeep of his hair.

Thus, the turban became an important religious article of faith of the Sikhs.

Turban became an essential as well as sacred part of his being.

A devout Sikh could get his head chopped off smilingly

but would never allow anybody maliciously touching his turban for which he always possesses utmost reverence, veneration and esteem.

In the city of Wolverhampton in the UK, a Sikh students, named Kulwinder Singh, was expelled from the school in 1977-78 on the ground that he wore turban along with the school uniform.

Government. agreed that he has a right to keep the hair and wear turban because these closely relate to his religion and instructed the school authorities to re-admit the student and allow him to wear turban along with the uniform.

Sikhs saved France in the first and second world wars sacrificing their lives for them with turbans on their heads. (83055 Sikhs perished and 1,09,045 wounded in these two world wars).

For a Sikh the turban is not a religious symbol as ‘cross’ in Christianity but most important part of the Sikh’s body and soul. It is in no way an ostensible sign of a religion but surely an inimitable aspect of the Sikh appearance and usual dress.

The turban is worn by the Sikhs under a divine command of the Founders of Sikhism, “No law can compel or coerce the Sikhs to change this Divine Law of our prophets, or modify it under any circumstances. The turban is a part of this moral and spiritual discipline and way of life.”
