The purpose of the Phase 8 development was to enable Total Fina Elf to meet its production requirements in the north part of the Tunu Field in MP mode. McConnell Dowell were awarded the EPC contract for the new trunklines which comprised of 20km of 500mm, 4.7km of 600mm and 0.4km of 900mm diameter pipeline including seven horizontal directional drills. The installation of the 500mm pipeline between GTS-L platform and GTS-I platform was completed using the modified bottom tow method in which the pipeline was pulled from a lay barge moored offshore along a predetermined path using a purpose built winch barge. CHALLENGES Completing seven horizontal directional drills in difficult swampy environments on the Mahakam Delta in Indonesia was a challenge McConnell Dowell met with resounding success. The drills ranged from 550m to 1,250m in length and were for the 500mm and 600mm diameter high pressure gas pipelines of Total Fina Elf Tunu Phase 8 Development. The very soft formation of clays and silts required a specialised swamp bit to be used for pilot operations and flycutters and barrel reamers were used for pre- reaming to the required 900mm diameter. The rig was able to be moved, setup and ready for drilling in a very short period of time. The ground conditions encountered on the project were ideal for HDD and barge mounting the drill rig enabled a fast construction program. PROJECT SUMMARYTunu is a gas and condensate field on the outer margin of the Mahakam Delta, partly onshore in swamp areas and partially offshore in shallow waters.

CHALLENGESCompleting seven horizontal directional drills in difficult swampy environments on the Mahakam Delta in Indonesia was a challenge McConnell Dowell met with resounding success. The drills ranged from 550m to 1,250m in length and were for the 500mm and 600mm diameter high pressure gas pipelines of Total Fina Elf Tunu Phase 8 Development.

The very soft formation of clays and silts required a specialised swamp bit to be used for pilot operations and flycutters and barrel reamers were used for pre-reaming to the required 900mm diameter.

The rig was able to be moved, setup and ready for drilling in a very short period of time.

The ground conditions encountered on the project were ideal for HDD and barge mounting the drill rig enabled a fast construction program.
