Welcome! NAI’s Sunny Southeast Region invites you to Tuning Our Interpretive Instruments
in Tennessee. Interpreters are the keepers of history, storytellers, entertainers,
resource protectors, and we all need a tune-up to keep these skills sharp. This
workshop will give participants the opportunity to sharpened skills and
experience to the natural and cultural beauty of Tennessee while learning and
sharing with our interpretive colleagues.
WHERE WE ARE Montgomery Bell State Park is located seven miles east of Dickson in Dickson
County and is approximately a 45-minute drive west of Nashville. Montgomery
Bell State Park is equipped with a conference center and onsite restaurant is
open every day.
LODGING OPTIONS The Park Inn offers 120 rooms and five suites ($80-$245). The park also has eight
environmentally-friendly modern cabins ($170-$200) available. The Conference
has a block of rooms reserved for the conference.

CAMPING The park’s campground ($15- $45) can accommodate 60 ft. campers on most
electrical sites. The campground has on-site sewer at 40 sites and can
accommodate small pop-up campers and large RVs. There are 94 campsites
available at the park.

Parks, in this preconference workshop to learn strategies for planning and
maintaining a living history program.
Leopold Education Project

Join Robert Hawk, II, County Extension Director of Jackson County, North Carolina,
and learn about The Leopold Education Project (LEP). LEP is an innovative,
interdisciplinary conservation and environmental education curriculum based on
the essays in A Sand County Almanac, written by Aldo Leopold. The LEP activities use
Aldo Leopold’s writings as a springboard for engaging students in natural science
and literature curriculum.
Tennessee Brewery/Distillery Tour

Tennessee is hopping with new breweries and distilleries highlighting history of the
local area. This pre-conference workshop will make several stops for a refreshing
tour of local Tennessee history and local agricultural products.

Nashville Songwriters Round
DYLAN ALTMAN Originally from the great
state of New Jersey, Dylan Altman has been writing
and performing in Nashville since 1994. He has had three #1 songs: Tim McGraw’s “Watch
The Wind Blow By”, Jake Owen’s “Barefoot Blue
Jean Night”, Jason Aldean’s “Take A Little Ride” as well as Chase
Bryant’s top ten hit “Take It On Back”. Other artists
who have recorded his songs include Trace
Adkins, Eli Young Band, Joe Nichols and Kenny
Wayne Shepherd.
BRICE LONG Brice has enjoyed a successful 25 year music career. As a songwriter he has had cuts with Garth Brooks, George Strait, Chris Stapleton, and many more. Brice’s songwriting hits include the #1 singles “Heartache On The Dance Floor” by Jon Pardi and “Nothing On But The Radio” by Gary Allan. Randy Houser’s “Like a Cowboy”, a song that also garnered Brice a CMA nomination for Song of the Year. Brice Long is signed to Sony / ATV Music Publishing. He is a native

Bring your own Mountain Bike for a moderate trail ride. Participants will learn
about the construction, care, and planning events.
Paddle the Harpeth River
Lunch Not Included Maximum: 30 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
The Harpeth River State Park is a scenic river in the heart of Tennessee. Paddle with our experienced staff
through historic, scenic, archaeological features. Discussions will include preserving and protecting these
natural and cultural features, managing crowds in a fast-growing city, recruiting and training volunteers.
NOTE: If weather/water conditions are unsafe—participants will travel to sites in vehicles.

Magical History Tour
Boxed Lunch Provided Maximum: 25 $20.00
The Bicentennial Capitol Mall at the heart of Nashville is quickly
becoming the place to be for learning about the state of
Tennessee. This field trip will take participants to the Bicentennial
Capitol Mall to learn about the steps that the park’s staff has taken to highlight
the history of Tennessee. After taking in the mall, participants will get a tour the
grounds of the Tennessee State Capitol. Next, participants will travel to the
Nashville Library to learn about the techniques used by the library’s staff to tell
the story of the Civil Rights Movement in Nashville.
Mysteries of the Museums Tour

The Tennessee State Museum and Tennessee State Library and Archives are getting some new digs in
Nashville. In 2018, the new Tennessee State Museum opened its doors to the public in its new location next
to the Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park. These moves will allow better access for visitors to the museum
and archive as well as new opportunities for collaboration with other partners. This field trip will visit both
the new museum and the current library and archives for a behind the scenes look at how both of these
institutions are preparing to meet the needs of their visitors and interpret their collections for visitors at
their new facilities.

Nature Centers are an environmental education and recreation
facilities of the Nashville Metropolitan Board of Parks and Recreation.
A Nature Center is a place where people can enjoy learning about our
natural and urban landscape, the flora and fauna that call it home, the cultural history of the area, and
the many complex interactions of what we so simply call “nature.” It is a place to remember that we are a
part of nature and not apart from it. Discussions include the physical and cultural pressures of nature
and nature centers in the It City.
Take a Walk on the Wild Side

Get a behind the scenes tour of the Nashville Zoo. Find out what the zoo staff
is dong to exceed expectations of their visitors and the AZA accreditation
guidelines. Explore recently opened exhibits and get a sneak peek at what’s coming with their amazing
expansion project. A new animal health center will be a state-of-the-art veterinary medical center
serving as a teaching center, connecting local colleges and universities with opportunities to learn about
diagnosis treatment, and management of animal health.
