PRESIDENT’S LETTER“We live in times of epic change. Our political compass has not changed, but the context is constantly changing.”---Angela Merkel, German Chancellor

Substitute “mission” for “political compass” and this statement appears very appropriate for the practice of medicine. We are increasingly told what we can do and for how long and what we can prescribe. We don’t know whether federally mandated insurance coverage, with all its attendant ramifications, will continue as the law of the land or be cast aside. We don’t know if draconian reimbursement cuts will truly come to pass, making it impos-sible to plan for future staffing and equipment needs. It is as if we are collectively holding our breath, waiting. Finally, I’m sure many of us feel at times that it seems more important to meaningfully interact with a computer than the patient. Yet, in that quote, albeit paraphrased, is a nugget of solid gold. Our mission-taking care of patients. No bureaucrat, technocrat, law, mandate, policy or computer can ever take that away. It’s as old as Hippocrates. I’m no Pollyanna. No head buried in the sand here. We can’t perform our mission if we can’t keep the doors open. But, give all those issues their due, then set them aside. Don’t let them steal your joy. Our mission is rock solid. All the distractions require constant effort to maintain our focus, but I think that effort will be rewarded with happier docs and healthier patients. It is my honor and privilege to serve as your President this year. I would welcome your comments at: [email protected].

LEADERSHIP CHANGES IN 2012Welcome to the following new members of the Tulsa County Medical Society Board of Directors; Jenny L. Boyer, M.D., James D. Cash, M.D., Scott T. Dull, M.D., Dawn A. Dr. Todd Brockman, TCMS President, said “It is important for TCMS to reach out to the medical students and residents to offer encouragement at this stage of their medical career. These men and women will be influencing the direction of healthcare and organized medicine in the future and we want to encourage their participation and leadership in medical society activities.” Thank you to the TCMS Board members whose terms expired in 2011 and whose leadership was instrumental in the work of the medical society; including, George B. Caldwell, M.D., MPH, David W. Griffiths, M.D., David W. Harris, M.D., Marc S. Milsten, M.D., and Aletha C. Oglesby, M.D. Welcome to David W. Griffiths, M.D., and David M. TCMS TO PROVIDE DOCTOR OF THE DAY AT THE STATE LEGISLATURE IN FEBRUARY TCMS members have the opportunity to meet legislators and participate in the legislative process in February by serving as Doctor of the Day at the State Legislature. Physicians who serve as Doctor of the Day will be introduced by their Senator and Representative before their respective house at the opening of that day’s session. The physician will then serve at the First Aid Station from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. providing primary care to the Legislature and staff. Participating physicians will be given directions as to where to report and a detailed agenda for the day. Thank you to those members who have already reserved a date. We still have a number of open dates to fill so if you are willing to serve, please contact TCMS at 918-743-6184 and sign-up. This is a great time to have personal dialogue with the legislators on issues that are important to physicians.
