Results of the Crusades• The Christians are

pushed out of Jerusalem.

• Muslim Turks are the victors, they take over The Byzantine Empire in 1453 and start the Ottoman Empire.

Effects of the Crusades• Negatives:

–Weakened the Byzantine Empire, the Pope and nobles.– Kings become stronger.– Leaves a legacy of bitterness between Christians, Jews,

and Muslims.• Positives:– Stimulated trade throughout the Mediterranean and

Middle East.– Europe learns a lot from the Muslims.

The Crusaders can be considered hypocrites because Christianity teaches that “thou shall not kill”, however they are celebrating the murder of Muslims and Jews.

Muslims still consider Saladin a hero because he was able to recapture Jerusalem from the Christians.

Impact of the Crusades on Medieval LifePOSITIVE NEGATIVE NEUTRAL

• Increased trade between Europe & Middle East.

• New goods such as spices (sugar), fabrics (cotton), and perfume are introduced to Europe.

• Caused an increase in exploration of foreign lands.

• Increased religious hatred/mistrust between Muslims and Christians (as well as Christians and Jews).

• King’s power increased.

• More taxes on the people

• The power and importance of the Pope was temporarily increased.
