Coughs and Colds

Many children have been sick lately, and we still have runny noses and coughing children at the Centre. A cough can hang around for a long time so it’s not expected or reasonable to keep chil-dren home until the cough has stopped. At the Centre we make sure that the children have access to tissues and that they wash their hands regularly. If your child is unwell however, he/she should stay at home to rest and recover, and avoid spreading the germs.

Vicki

Unfortunately Vicki seems to have picked up a nasty virus that affects her balance. We are hoping to see her back at the Centre soon. In the meantime, Indi and Shanae have been doing a great job helping out.

Education Week

Thank you to all of the families who came and contributed to the Centre’s lunch during Education Week. The children really enjoyed having you staying for lunch. Some families missed out due to illness, so we have to make sure we do it again next term. It is nice to have the time to sit and chat and to get to know each other a bit better. As families can come and go at different times during drop off and pick up, they don’t necessarily get to meet each other often.

Rhubarb Crumble

The children’s contribution to our lunch was to make a Rhubarb Crumble, started off with picking the rhubarb from the school garden, and then cutting the stems, greasing the dish, and making the crumble. I didn’t have to do much at all, just supervise. Cutting with a knife is one of their favour-ite activities, so don’t hesitate to let you children help with cutting at home. Just make sure you supervise so their fingers are in the right place. Some fruit and vegetables really easy to cut with a knife include: cucumber, zucchini, and banana.

Bianca Jackson (Elsa’s Mum)

Bianca has been elected by School Council to be our representative during School Council meet-ings. Please do not hesitate to talk to Bianca if you have any suggestions/concerns. Other people to talk to are of course Mr Harty, Vicki or me.

School Photos

School Photos on Thursday 15/6 are for the Preschool as well; you will receive a permission/order form before the date.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ELSA WHO IS TURNING 4!!!!

JUNIOR ROOM NEWS

The Junior Room students are working well as we continue our investigations in to “How we organise

ourselves”. The ideas of ant colonies, teamwork and co-operation have resonated with the children and

have led to some excellent avenues for research and generating further questions for investigation. We are

using information books, fiction books and digital literacies such as A Bu’s Life, Youtube: The Magic School

Bus to enhance our learning. This week the students will make their own model (queen, worker or soldier

ant) and are developing their ideas for a writer’s workshop piece, writing from the perspective of an ant.

Next we are going to develop our understandings about how we organise ourselves for living and learning

with a specific focus on our own healthy eating habits eg How we organise our lunchboxes?

In Soundwaves, the students are focused on i-e as in ice cream and n as in net. The Foundation students

are working on their last three exploratory sounds- eer as in deer, air as in chair, and er as in ladder.

In our science unit, “What’s it made of”, students had an excellent time as they put their hands into a

mystery feely bag and tried to identify what they were holding. They had to describe the object in terms of

texture, shape and what it could be made from. This week we will be looking at the different properties of

some materials.

In Maths our activities have been focused on number patterns, skip counting and looking at number

before, after, 10 more and 10 less. A hundreds chart has been a very useful tool for developing this skill.

Appreciations:

A big thankyou to the parents and students for getting involved in our DEAR Day activities. I

absolutely loved the whole school group Cosmic Yoga and our arts based literacy activities. The

whole school has recently subscribed to StoryboxLibrary an online treasure trove of stories read by

Australian people of note! Rusty Berther ( from Barwon Downs) even graced the classroom via the

interactive television reading “Pig Dude: He can do anything!”.

A big thankyou to the School Council for supporting the purchase of 5 more ipads for the Junior

Room. This will hopefully help us streamline the use of ICT for learning in the classroom.

Thanks to Sarah L for asking the Junior Room students to help make signs for the Roaming Reptiles.

The students have absolutely loved drawing reptiles and writing the information.

Reminders:

FKGB is on this Friday so come prepared for wet weather!

ROAMING REPTILES EXHIBIT

This Sunday is the Forrest Soupfest event, held at the Forrest Public Hall. Hopefully lots of par-

ents will be able to come along to this family festival and try some yummy soup! The school has

kindly donated the use of the school car park to the event organisers and this year, the ‘Roaming

Reptiles’ exhibit will be housed in the Junior Room. The junior room students have been busy ad-

vertising the event ( example above—thanks Lachie Crabbe!) and the students are all keen to visit

the exhibit on the day. Costs only $2 entry, bring your camera along & you might be able to get

some memorable photos with some reptiles. If any parents would like to volunteer an hour to be in

the junior room whilst the event is on, please let Sarah (School Office) know—5236 6393.
